BMX champion Beth Shriever backs plans for track in Finchingfield
It was hoped the facilities, off Bardfield Road, would lead to the creation of a BMX club and inspire a new Olympian.
Shriever, who triumphed in the 2025 BMX World Championships in August and represented Team GB at the 2024 Olympics, said the track was "only going to bring good publicity" to the area."The community around BMX is better than what people think," she told BBC Essex, adding riders "all look out for each other". "If I had something like that when I was younger I'd be there all the time. "It's only going to be positive, I think it'll be great."Thirteen letters of objection were sent to the local authority about the plans, which were submitted by Finchingfield Parish Council.They outlined concerns about anti-social behaviour, drug use and noise arising from the site.
'Not safe'
Roy Cox, from the Finchingfield Society, said the track was a "wonderful idea" but argued it was not appropriate for the village."How do the youngsters get here to this village?," he said. "If they cycle it means they have to come along country lanes and that is not a safe thing to do."Approving the plans, a planning officer from Braintree District Council said the proposal would not generate "significant levels of noise"."The BMX track will be a legacy track in order to create a BMX club to support and feed into the Olympic BMX program," they added.

Russell Martin's eighth match of a Rangers reign already riddled with doubts proved close to a living nightmare. Championship promotion races and playoffs, the ill winds of struggling in the Premier League have nothing on the fever-dream pressures of failing to turn around one of Glasgow's giants. Martin may be a believer in his own processes but in an environment where snap decisions are often sustained, he does not have long to set them in place. The chances of Rangers playing Champions League football rather than the Europa League are an outside chance after a first-half performance of rank ineptitude, the tone and probably the two-legged tie set by a horrible opening 20 minutes in which three soft goals were conceded. So early in his stewardship, Martin is still in the experimental phase and until a revival in the second half the experiment looked likely to be abandoned some time soon. Jayden Meghoma was making his debut at left-back, the Brentford loanee familiar to Martin from Southampton. James Tavernier, club captain, was benched, with another Premier League loanee, Max Aarons at right-back. Christos Tzolis, reportedly high on Crystal Palace's list should Eberechi Eze depart, and a scorer for Greece at Hampden Park in March, was earmarked as Brugge's danger man, veteran Hans Vanaken as the roving playmaker. On the hour, Martin threw on Hamza Igamane and Thelo Aasgaard, with Tottenham loanee Mikey Moore soon arriving alongside Tavernier. Meanwhile, new recruits Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki also got on the scoresheet. For those anticipating Pep Guardiola's side to prove too strong once again this season, they are 11/4 third-favourites to claim their fifth title in six seasons. Chelsea Chelsea kickstarted their campaign with a disappointing 0-0 draw at home against London rivals Crystal Palace. Despite boasting 72 percent of possession - Cole Palmer and Co only managed to register three shots on target. Welsh Rugby Union set to confirm radical club plans as part of restructure of the game
The Welsh Rugby Union is set to propose reducing the number of Wales' professional clubs from four to two as part of radical plans to restructure the country's national game. Chief executive Abi Tierney, chairman Richard Collier-Keywood and director of rugby Dave Reddin are set to officially confirm the news on Wednesday. However, they will not be finalised as definite because a six-week consultation period will then follow where the WRU will seek the opinions of the Welsh game's stakeholders. Dragons, Cardiff, Ospreys and Scarlets are Wales' domestic sides as things stand. But at least two of those organisations will be at risk moving forward with any halving of teams set to officially come into operation for the 2026/27 season. Cutting from four to two is one of a number of different options being considered by the WRU but the governing body's preferred direction of travel. It remains unclear at this stage whether the two sides the WRU wants to have moving forward will be teams which already exist or new entities altogether. Either way, the plans represent the most seismic moment in Welsh rugby history since Wales moved from a club-based system to what were initially five regions in 2003. The WRU is doing so in reaction to more than two years of struggles in which their men's national side lost 18 straight Test matches. Wales' four current clubs have also struggled to compete for success in the United Rugby Championship and in Europe. In the coming years, the WRU plans for its two teams to have squads of 50 players apiece and have annual playing budgets of £7.8million. It is hoped that will improve their chances of domestic trophies. In time, the WRU also plans to build a new national centre of excellence at which their two domestic sides will be based. Both will also have a women's counterpart. However, the introduction of such plans is unlikely to be straightforward. The WRU owns Cardiff after it fell into administration earlier this year, but the other three teams are all independent businesses and are likely to launch legal action if they're put at risk. The URC is looking at the option of replacing the loss of Welsh sides by adding two teams from the USA to its cross-border competition.
