How a wall in Surrey helped the Allies on D-Day
Dozens stroll past the huge wall that runs through the wood each day, but few will know of the key role it played in the D-Day landings.
By the end of 1942, German-occupied Europe stretched from the Atlantic coast of France in the west to the Russian Ural Mountains in the east.
But Hitler felt the coastline to the west was vulnerable to invasion, so ordered forts be built on 2,000 miles (3,218km) of shoreline along France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark and the northern tip of Norway.
The defence system would inevitably fail, thanks in part to the tests carried out hundreds of miles away in Surrey in 1943.
Royal Canadian Engineers based in the area built a replica section of wall in the woodland using plans smuggled from France, which showed how the real wall was built.
The Army then began blowing the wall to pieces using two new armoured test vehicles.
One of the vehicles was the AVRE mortar-firing tank, which was then used to break through the real Atlantic Wall during the D-Day landings.
"It was about creating new armoured vehicles, vehicles that would be able to breach this wall," said military historian Paul McCue.
"The people who built this went ashore during the invasion of France and many lost their lives.
"There's a plaque on it but it's quite a modest one and it's tucked away, so people will walk past it and not see it."
Today, it is clear to see the chasms that were blown out of the wall during tests, with metal rods still poking from moss-covered rubble.

Landlines to be reconnected after tractor fire
Work to restore broadband and landline services affected by a fire that broke out in a tractor is to begin next week. The blaze began in a tractor on the A484 near Llangeler, Carmarthenshire, on 18 July, before spreading to other vehicles and a house. Firefighters from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service were on scene for more than three hours. Openreach said "complex" repair work would begin on Tuesday, adding: "We understand how frustrating this is and the impact it's having, so we really appreciate everyone's patience and understanding while we carry out the repairs." Tractor, house and hay bales wrecked in blaze It added its network was damaged in the fire, with overhead cables affected and broadband and landline services disrupted for some customers in the area. It said it was working closely with the council and partners to resolve the issue. "The work is complex and time-consuming, involving both fibre and copper cables, which require different specialist teams," Openreach added. Any customers experiencing issues have been asked to contact their service provider for support. Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was believed to have started in a tractor but spread to a load of hay bales that were under tow. It also spread to two other vehicles, along with a nearby house, where it was confined to the kitchen and attic.

Triplets paid tribute to grandfather as they graduated from same university
A set of triplets paid tribute to their grandfather as they all graduated from the same university. The three sisters, Rose, Maudie and Grace Orgill, 21, from Gloucestershire, graduated together from Cardiff University's class of 2025, each receiving honours from one of the university's colleges. Rose earned a BSc in chemistry, Maudie a BA in history and Grace a BSc in biomedical sciences. The walk across the stage to celebrate their successes was an emotional one for the sisters, each carrying a tribute to their late grandfather. 'Unfortunately, their grandfather passed away suddenly on the day of Rose's final chemistry exam,' said their mother, Clare Orgill. 'The girls each wore a ribbon and forget-me-not flower on their gowns in memory of him, a beautiful reminder that he's still with them, cheering them on. Just like us, he was so incredibly proud of our girls.' Going to university together was not initially the plan for the sisters. 'It happened by chance,' said Rose, the eldest of the triplets. 'Ideally, we wanted to split up, but we all fell in love with Cardiff on the offer holder day, when the sun was out, something we later realised is pretty rare. 'We agreed Cardiff was big and, because we were all studying different subjects, we were sure we wouldn't bump into each other all of the time.' Things did not work out that way when the sisters were assigned the same six-person flat. 'It was like moving home from home with them to be honest,' Grace said. 'Our rooms are actually closer at uni than at home. 'But it's allowed us to make triple the friends, which is never a bad thing.' They continued to live together throughout their studies, and all represented the Cardiff University Netball Club, with Rose competing for the first team in Varsity and Maudie, the youngest of the group, captaining the team in her final year. The sisters plan to travel over the coming months, starting their trip in south-east Asia before deciding what to do next, possibly going in separate directions. Grace is considering joining the RAF, while Rose may moved abroad for work. For Maudie, a return to Cardiff may be on the cards. 'I'm hoping to go into law and potentially do a conversion course at Cardiff,' she said. Their father, Phil Orgill, said: 'We're excited to see what the future has in store for them and if they'll all end up working in the same city too. 'But first we're looking forward to hearing all about their adventures when they head off travelling at the end of the year.'

Tunstall solar farm would have ‘no unacceptable environmental impacts'
A proposed solar farm on farmland in North Yorkshire would have no unacceptable environmental impacts and would deliver benefits including habitat creation and biodiversity net-gains, the developers behind the scheme say. A planning application has been submitted for a 23.5MW solar farm on land at East Appleton Farm, south of Tunstall, near Catterick Garrison. Applicants, Enviromena, say the scheme would produce enough renewable energy to power more than 11,000 homes a year. But local residents have questioned the benefits of the scheme and raised concerns about the environmental impact on their community. Supporting documents submitted with the application say the scheme would provide a 'clean, renewable, and sustainable form of electricity' and would make a valuable contribution towards national targets for carbon emission reduction and domestic energy security. The documents add: 'In addition to the significant benefits associated with the generation of renewable energy and carbon reduction ambitions, the proposed development would deliver further benefits in supporting job creation, economic development and significant biodiversity gains through habitat creation and ecological enhancements, which further weigh in favour of granting permission.' The applicants say the solar farm would be temporary with all infrastructure removed and land reinstated after 40 years. The solar panels would be 2.65m above ground level and angled at a tilt to optimise daylight absorption. Two substations would be built on the site, which would be surrounded by 1.9m high deer fencing and pole-mounted CCTV cameras. Trees and hedgerows within the site and adjacent to the site boundary would be safeguarded and retained, while existing public rights of way would also be kept, the supporting documents say. Construction access would be obtained via the existing field entrance off Catterick Lane, to the north of the site. Construction is estimated to take around 36 weeks. The planning application has been submitted to North Yorkshire Council. Several objections have been submitted so far. One local resident said: 'The area to be developed will have a significant and detrimental impact on a wide variety of rare and declining flora and fauna. 'Curlew and oyster catchers have bred and raised broods on this land over the last spring and summer.' Another member of the public pointed out that another solar farm already exists near Tunstall. They added: 'Loss of agricultural value is significant and the reports submitted are not reflective of what has actually been grown historically.' A Facebook group, Tunstall Solar Farm – A Deeper Look, has been launched by villagers to discuss the scheme.
