Kim Mulkey praises Flau'Jae Johnson following LSU women's basketball's Elite Eight loss
Following LSU women's basketball's loss in the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight against UCLA, Tigers' head coach Kim Mulkey talked about her star guard.
Flau'Jae Johnson, who may declare for the WNBA in the coming days, scored a game-high 28 points against the Bruins in what may have been her final game donning the purple and gold. Mulkey reflected on Johnson's decision to play for her and how instrumental it was to the success of the program. The junior guard signed to LSU during Mulkey's inaugural season at the helm.
"When I took the LSU job, Flau'Jae Johnson was the first McDonald's All-American that I signed at LSU," Mulkey said. "[I] had not coached and won anything at LSU and she came to LSU and so she jump-started our program really.
"We brought in Angel [Reese] and lots of other players but Flau'Jae was a high school All-American and we got her. I'm forever indebted to Flau'Jae Johnson."
If her LSU career ended on Sunday, Johnson would leave Baton Rouge as a national champion, an All-American and three-time All-SEC honoree. She averaged double-digits all three years and led the team in scoring for much of 2024-25. Johnson surpassed 1,500 points and averaged 18.3 points per game.
Against the Bruins, Johnson scored 24 of her 28 points in the second half as she led the Tigers' comeback effort. Though she and the team fell short, Mulkey recognized her spirited play and credited her as part of the reason why the program is where it is.
"That's what All-Americans do," Mulkey said. "They just try to figure out some way to impact the game and she did."

Tigers Predicted to Trade For Two-Time Blue Jays All-Star After Kerry Carpenter News
Tigers Predicted to Trade For Two-Time Blue Jays All-Star After Kerry Carpenter News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The 2025 Tigers are playing the best baseball that has come out of Detroit since the early 2010s, and doing so with a lineup of mostly role players emboldened by last year's Cinderella run to the ALDS. Advertisement Reigning Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal has been electric for the third straight year, and has thrown 16 straight scoreless innings over his last two starts that included a May 25 "Maddux" against the same Guardians that ended his 2024 season. The main point of need for MLB's best team is help at the back of the bullpen, but ESPN insider Jeff Passan linked Detroit to a very interesting AL East trade candidate in his June 3 deadline preview. Passan wrote that he believes the "best fit" for the Tigers is two-time Blue Jays All-Star shortstop Bo Bichette, who is set to become a free agent after this season. Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette (11).Daniel Kucin Jr.-Imagn Images Bichette, along with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., were heavily rumored to become available last year as the Blue Jays fell to a last-place finish in the AL East. Advertisement Guerrero Jr signed a 14-year, $500 million extension to keep him a Blue Jay for most, if not all, of his career, but Bichette is still waiting on a lucrative deal from Toronto. If that doesn't happen, and the Blue Jays look to move on from their shortstop with infield prospects Josh Kasevich and Arjuan Nimmala a couple of years away from the majors, they could look to trade him instead of letting him walk for nothing. Passan wrote that Bichette, who hit seven home runs and slugged above .500 in the month of May, brings the kind of pop that current shortstop Trey Sweeney doesn't have. "Bichette's gap-to-gap power would play well at Comerica Park and lengthen a lineup that has scored more runs than anticipated," Passan wrote. Advertisement Passan's suggestion comes a day after outfielder Kerry Carpenter became the first Tigers player to hit three home runs in a game since fringe Hall-of-Famer Victor Martinez in 2016. The 27-year-old Bichette would add another all-around bat next to Carpenter in Detroit's already dangerous lineup as they jockey for postseason position into the summer. Phillies Identified as Potential Trade Fit for Orioles All-Star Felix Bautista
Phillies Identified as Potential Trade Fit for Orioles All-Star Felix Bautista originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies are setting up to be one of the most aggressive teams at this year's MLB trade deadline. Firmly entrenched in the Wild Card race and 4.5 games behind the New York Mets in the NL East, the Phillies are expected to be in the market for relief pitching. Advertisement While closer Jose Alvarado serves an 80-game suspension and is no longer eligible for the postseason, the team has turned to Jordan Romano with frustrating results. In 23.1 innings, the former All-Star has struggled, allowing 28 hits and 12 walks, leading to a 7.71 ERA. As a whole, the bullpen ranks 25th with a 4.56 ERA, proving further why adding one or two pieces will be crucial to keep Philadelphia in a crowded NL playoff hunt. Sports Illustrated's Dylan Sampson recently listed relief pitcher Felix Bautista as a potential fit for the Phillies' bullpen. Baltimore Orioles pitcher Felix Bautista (74) throws a pitch against the Athletics during the ninth inning at Sutter Health Lee-Imagn Images Once a core player to a hopeful Baltimore Orioles perennial playoff contender, Bautista is one of the hottest names on the trade block. While Baltimore is not a confirmed deadline seller, trading Bautista may further strengthen their farm system, setting up the potential for star-caliber acquisitions in the offseason. Advertisement Although Bautista's star has fallen slightly after Tommy John Surgery cost him the entire 2024 season, he has rebounded well. In 21.2 innings of work, the 30-year-old has posted a 3.32 ERA, 28 strikeouts, and 12 saves in 2025. His fastball velocity has dipped post-surgery, but the former All-Star still has the track record any team would want come time for the playoffs. In 2023, Bautista notched 33 saves and 110 strikeouts over 61 innings en route to an All-Star game nod. While he may not be the same player, banking on Bautista in a late-inning role is the aggressive move Phillies' president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski, is known to make. Zack Wheeler Breaks Fanchise Record With 1,000th Phillies' Strikeout
Zack Wheeler Breaks Fanchise Record With 1,000th Phillies' Strikeout originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Zack Wheeler has been nothing short of a phenomenal pitcher during his time in Philadelphia. Ever since the Phillies signed him before the 2020 season, Wheeler has been one of the top arms in all of MLB. With over 90 quality starts, a pair of All-Star appearances, and the National League strikeout crown in 2021, he's become a true ace at the top of the rotation. Advertisement During his latest start Monday night, the veteran righty added another huge accomplishment to his name. In the top of the 6th inning, Wheeler struck out Cubs outfielder Kyle Tucker, becoming the fastest to ever record 1,000 regular season strikeouts in a Phillies uniform. Wheeler reached the milestone in 907.2 innings, beating out franchise greats such as Steve Carlton, Robin Roberts, Cole Hamels, and more. As the above video shows, he got a nice standing ovation from the Philly faithful for his mark. Zack has accumulated 1,726 strikeouts in his entire career, putting him well within striking distance for 2,000 before he retires. That does not include the 77 more he's picked up during the postseason. Advertisement Wheeler currently sits at 10th all-time in total strikeouts among Phillies' pitchers, while teammate Aaron Nola is knocking on Hamels' door in 4th with 1,831. Zack Wheeler struck out seven Chicago Cubs hitters while allowing one run in six innings Monday Ross-Imagn Images Wheeler is currently in the second year of a three-year, $126 million deal that's made him the highest paid pitcher in baseball. Only two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto have higher annual salaries. At this stage in his career, the 35-year-old Wheeler has won plenty of respect throughout the game. But two things have eluded him to this point: a Cy Young Award, and a World Series Championship. Both remain in sight as this Phillies core tries to finish what they started seven years ago with the Bryce Harper signing.
