'Cody making nationals is an incredible achievement and kind of continues an almost magical season for him. And he's still got a little bit more left in the tank as we head to Eugene. I think it's a good experience for the other Jackrabbits that made the trip to College Station. It's sad to see the careers of some all-time greats come to a close, but I wish them the best in their future endeavors. For those that return next year, hopefully they're fueled to achieve greater heights.'
THE MEET
Cody Larson finished second in his heat of the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:39.60. Larson's placement as runner-up in his heat secured the junior a spot in the semifinals held in Eugene, OR. Josh Becker also competed in the 3000-steeplechase, but did not finish due to injury.
Pierre Lear made his way to the quarterfinals after clocking 13.76 in the 110-hurdles. The senior finished 21st overall with a time of 14.40. Lear's performance in the quarterfinals was his final competition as a Jackrabbit. Lear will leave South Dakota State with a legacy as he currently holds the 110-hurdles program record at 13.57.
In field events, Madison Kizer competed in the high jump on Saturday afternoon. Kizer cleared 5-07.25 (1.71m) to take 31st in the event. Kizer also finished her collegiate career, but will live on in SDSU history as the senior tied the program record of 5-10.75 earlier this season.
Caiden Fredrick, Cayman Gebheim and Ethan Fischer all represented the Jackrabbits in the discus competition. Frederick placed 33rd with a mark of 179-03 (54.65m), Gebheim took 37th with a throw of 176-11 (53.92m), and Fischer finished at 45th with a mark of 164-6 (50.14m).
Brielle Dixon rounded out her collegiate career Thursday evening. Dixon placed 36th in the first round of the 100-hurdles with a time of 13.58. Similarly to Lear, Dixon will leave the program with her name on the SDSU records list as she currently holds the best Jackrabbit 100-hurdles time of 13.37.
Jessica Lutmer also finished her collegiate career Thursday night. Lutmer, alongside freshman Courtney Stadter, competed in the 10,000-meter race. Stadter took 36th in the event, crossing the line at 35:52.31, while Lutmer finished at 36:59.36 for 42nd.
Grayson Ring competed at the NCAA West Regionals after his first year in DI competition. Ring competed in the high jump, but did not clear the opening bar.

Iowa's Mark Gronowski ready for season, eager for contact as Hawkeyes hope for improved QB play
IOWA CITY, Iowa — Quarterbacks aren't supposed to get hit in practice, but Mark Gronowski wouldn't mind getting tackled a few times before the season. 'I'm a guy that loves contact,' Iowa's first-year quarterback said. 'I love getting hit to start off games. Just get the feel of it, especially to start the season off. I haven't been hit all offseason, all fall camp, as we try to protect the quarterbacks, but I'll put my body on the line when we need to.' It's probably not wise, though, for Gronowski to take too many shots. The South Dakota State transfer is the central figure in an offense that is starved for better quarterback production. 'To me, ever since Spencer got hurt in November of '22, it's been a bumpy road,' Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said, referring to Spencer Petras. 'Nobody's fault, it's just the way it's been.' The Hawkeyes used three quarterbacks as injuries mounted last season, and they ranked 129th in passing. It's why Iowa went out and got Gronowski. 'I mean, personally, I love the pressure, because, really, you've got to look at it as more of an opportunity,' Gronowski said. 'Everyone in the community, everyone on this team, has really been looking for that QB success, has been looking for that offensive success. And we got a lot of great guys and a lot of great weapons that we have the opportunity to do that.' Gronowski threw for 10,308 yards and won 49 games in his four seasons at South Dakota State. He led the Jackrabbits to Football Championship Subdivision championships in 2022 and 2023 and won the Walter Payton Award in 2023 as the top FCS offensive player. Offensive coordinator Tim Lester calls Gronowski a 'steady Eddie.' 'It's very evident why he's won as much as he's won as you watch him go through the good and the bad, and how it never affects his mindset,' Lester said. Gronowski entered the transfer portal rather than enter the NFL draft because of a shoulder injury requiring offseason surgery. He missed spring practice to recover. 'I feel so fresh,' he said. 'The arm feels fresh. It's as good as I felt so far.' Running men Replacing running back Kaleb Johnson might be a three-man job. Johnson, a third-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, ran for 1,537 yards last season and a program-record 21 rushing touchdowns. The top returning rushers are Kamari Moulton (473 yards) and Jaziun Patterson (309), and Terrell Washington Jr. also is in the mix. 'We can use the talents of each of them,' Lester said. 'Some of them are great route runners, some of them have unbelievable hands, some are big and can bull over people.' Middle of the defense The departures of Jay Higgins and Nick Jackson, who combined for 215 tackles, leave a hole at linebacker. Karson Sharar, Jaxon Rexroth and Jaden Harrell are first in line for the three spots. Defensive coordinator Phil Parker said he likes the depth, with Jayden Montgomery, Cam Buffington and Preston Ries also competing for playing time. Chasing history Ferentz is two wins from passing Ohio State's Woody Hayes as the Big Ten's winningest coach. Ferentz has 204 wins at Iowa heading into his 27th year. What has long been thought to be true for the fan base of the Iowa Hawkeyes has officially been confirmed entering the 2025 college football season. South Dakota State transfer Mark Gronowski is the Hawkeyes' starting quarterback for 2025 and enters the season with a clean bill of health that kept him out of spring practices. The talented signal caller is a reason for excitement around Iowa, as there is a belief he could be the best QB Iowa has had in many years, which could be the missing puzzle piece for a special season. The news, albeit nearly a foregone conclusion already, came from Pete Nakos of On3. Gronowski joins Iowa after an illustrious career for the South Dakota State Jackrabbits that saw him win the Walter Payton Award as the best FCS player in the country and win two national championships. A proven winner, he brings the ability to air it out with over 10,000 passing yards and isn't afraid to run the ball as a threat on the ground. Mark Gronowski will be paired with Iowa offensive coordinator Tim Lester, who enters his second season with the Hawkeyes after dragging the unit out of the doldrums last year and infusing some success into a unit that was desperate for it. 'You don't necessarily get to pick the exact guy you want in the transfer portal. You take the guys who are on there. When you're recruiting the country, there are 10,000 to choose from. In the portal, there are like seven guys who have experience and play at this level. We got one of the seven," Lester said about Gronowski choosing the Hawkeyes out of the transfer portal. Iowa and Gronowski will get things underway in less than two weeks when they host the UAlbany Great Danes in Kinnick Stadium for their Week 1 opener at 5 p.m. CT on Saturday, August 30th.
