Inside the worst airport lounge in the US with a less than two star rating: 'dark, dingy pit of windowless sadness'
Airport lounges are a much-coveted travel luxury, designed to ease the often irksome experience of waiting around for a flight.
Earned through frequent-flyer points or shelling out hard-earned cash, members and visitors expect comfy seating and decent food.
However, one airport lounge is consistently rated among the lowest in the country by fed up travelers.
Swissport Lounge at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago has 1.8 stars on Google and a rating of 1.5 out of 5 on Yelp.
The lounge is a small windowless room accessible to first-class and business-class travelers on several international airlines including Qatar, Swiss and Emirates, as well as Priority Pass members.
Online reviews of the lounge have complained of its poor food, dingy lighting, rude staff and lack of amenities.
'It's like hanging out in the early 90s at your friend's basement at the house his divorced dad rented. Dank. Dark. Weird stains,' one visitor said of the lounge on Reddit.
'But you get to pour your own liquor because there are no adults in charge.'
The lounge bar has no staff so guests must make their own drinks.
'Don't go there. Ever. The best part of the experience with this lounge is leaving it. It is a dark, dingy pit of windowless sadness,' another wrote.
'If your goal is to make a 4.5 hour layover at ORD somehow more terrible than it already is, this is a pretty good approach,' a third added.
Other reviewers complained that they had been turned away with Priority Pass tickets when the lounge was too full.
Jorge Da Silva, head of North America lounges for Swissport, told the Wall Street Journal that the O'Hare lounge is indeed not up to scratch.
The company, which operates more than 100 lounges in 20 countries, said it is due a multi-million dollar lounge expansion and makeover.
Swissport said the renovation, in tandem with an undisclosed airline, is still awaiting official approval from the airport.
'We are fully committed to improving the passenger experience at ORD,' Da Silva told the outlet.
Other reviewers complained that they had been turned away with Priority Pass tickets when the lounge was too full
For those looking for a more luxurious experience at Chicago's Terminal 5 there is the Delta Sky Club right across the hall and a new LOT Polish Airlines lounge.
Not all reviews of the Swissport Lounge were negative, however, with one Google review giving it the full five stars.
'This place is great,' they wrote earlier this month.
'The drinks are free. There are cup of noodles and gummy bears.
'It beats paying $7 a bag for the gummy bears at the kiosk. People need to quit hating.'
It comes after sweeping changes to many beloved airport lounge programs this year.
Delta cracked down on its lounge access, while American Express and Capital One introduced digital waitlists which allow cardholders to join the line for lounges remotely through an app.

Holidaymakers have been issued a fresh warning of the potential for strike action at Glasgow Airport over the summer, as a leading union confirmed more than 800 workers from five companies were involved in pay disputes. Unite said workers at Glasgow Airport Ltd, ICTS Central Search, Swissport, Menzies Aviation and Falck could be balloted for walkouts. Unite warned strikes could 'ground planes and passengers'. Pat McIlvogue, Unite industrial officer, said walkouts could be held from the middle of July. More than 100 Swissport workers are locked in a dispute about rotas and work-life balance, according to Unite. The union said the company 'is demanding that workers at extreme short notice have to work shifts at various times and for various durations, which is directly impacting on their personal lives'. Unite said some Swissport staff were 'struggling with chronic fatigue'. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad A further 250 ICTS Central Search workers, who deal with passengers directly in the security search area and process them for flights, are involved in a dispute over under-staffing, working conditions and pay. A total of 120 workers employed by Glasgow Airport Limited have rejected a basic 3.6 per cent pay increase, with staff including airport ambassadors, airside support officers, engineers and managers involved. The same 3.6 per cent pay increase was rejected by 50 Falck firefighters who perform fire safety functions at the airport. Meanwhile 300 Menzies Aviation workers, including dispatchers, allocators, airside agents and controllers, have rejected a basic uplift worth around 4.25 per cent. The union recently announced a series of what it said were wage wins for 100 North Air workers across Scottish airports, and more than 140 staff based at Glasgow Airport employed by ABM and OCS. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: 'Hundreds of workers at Glasgow Airport are heading towards summer strike action which would ground planes and passengers. The companies involved are all highly profitable and can easily afford to give our members better pay and working conditions. 'The truth is that they are denying fair pay increases to cynically boost their profits.' Unite had previously indicated that strikes could also hit Edinburgh Airport this summer. The union said last month around 300 workers based at Scotland's busiest airport had separately rejected a pay rise worth around 4 per cent. The departures area at Edinburgh Airport. The Scotsman understands talks took place on Friday, but a breakthrough at Edinburgh is yet to be reached. It is understood there has been at least one instance in the past of pay deals being negotiated separately with companies operating out of Edinburgh and Glasgow airports. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Mr McIlvogue said: 'Unite is in dispute with companies at Glasgow Airport, which could ultimately bring hundreds of workers out on strike. The companies can resolve these disputes with Unite before that situation happens by addressing the legitimate concerns and pay aspirations of our members. 'If the companies refuse to work with Unite to resolve these disputes, then we will have no option but to open strike ballots. This could mean strike action happening from the middle of July.' A spokesman for Glasgow Airport said: "We have ongoing dialogue with Unite regarding a pay deal for our direct workforce."

Travelers warned over ‘underweight' bag issue as flyer is stopped by airline agent – it was all down to what was inside
ONE disgruntled passenger has come under fire for their bag - which was deemed too light. A frustrated Delta Air Lines passenger shared his confusing experience on Reddit - which garnered plenty of attention. 2 The vexed traveler wrote: "I bought some large lightweight souvenirs that wouldn't fit in my checked bag or carry-on, so I stuffed them into the secret duffel bag that I always bring for such contingencies and tried to check it. "Imagine my surprise when the agent said I couldn't check my fluffy bag because it didn't weigh enough! Is this the bizarro luggage counter?" He continued: "The agent said I should go ahead and take it as a third carry-on, but I didn't want to get hassled by the gate agent. I've read in this sub that the counter agents will say stuff just to get rid of you, only to have the GA say 'nuh-uh'. "I didn't want to be forced to gate-check my backpack... so I found some heavy things in my other carry-ons to bring it up to three kilos. "Has this happened to anyone else? What do you think is the reasoning behind this? Maybe they have some weight-based tracking systems that wouldn't work? "Are they worried my bag could literally slip through a crack? I wonder if there are also minimum dimension requirements?" Users commented: "Might have been too lightweight and flexible to make it through the sorting machines and various belts to get from the bag check conveyor to the plane. "Need some heft to push through turns and flaps and rollers." A second admitted: "I work at the airport and I see how the ramp people treat those bags. They also get stuck between the belts." A third suggested: "Could easily be blown from the belt or from the cart." Why Standing Up Early After Landing in Turkey Could Cost You $67 "It actually makes perfect sense. The bags get thrown around, piled on etc. Your lightweight half-empty bag would have been smushed like a pancake. The only checkable bags are tightly packed ones that wouldn't get damaged in usual handling. Sometimes it's possible to have things boxed so they can be checked," proposed a fourth. A fifth mocked: " You checking helium balloons?" "Weight itself definitely isn't an issue. I've checked a small item under 1lb and had no issues," proclaimed another. Most airlines list the maximum weight of a checked bag on their website, but they do not state whether there is a minimum weight limit. Delta's website lists its price for the first and second "standard checked bag under 50 lbs." "I would've just checked my carry on and taken souvenirs with me," another user encouraged. While Delta's maximum checked bag weight is on their website, there is no minimum weight limit stated - nor items listed too light to carry. The website points to a "standard checked bag under 50lbs." 2
