Exiles 'suffered' once again but battling qualities shone throgh

Yahoo2 days ago
NEWPORT County AFC started their League Two campaign with a 1-1 home draw against Notts County on Saturday on a day when the football was overshadowed by a concerning medical emergency before kick-off.
Once play did get under way an hour late, the visitors dominated the first half, but the Exiles held on and broke the deadlock against the run of play when Ged Garner headed in four minutes after the restart.
The Magpies earned a point thanks to Jodi Jones' superbly struck penalty on 65 minutes before Michael Reindorf rattled the post soon afterwards.
David Hughes' men now have a clear week to prepare for their trip to Crawley Town this coming Saturday and, despite being happy with the point, the manager knows there is still plenty to work on...
Under the cosh
Notts County hit the bar after 10 minutes and the visitors could easily have been out of sight by half-time, so it's easy to see why Hughes and most fans were reasonably satisfied with the end result after a much-improved second-half showing.
The Exiles have certainly shown their battling qualities in the first two competitive matches of the season - they have faced a worrying 35 shots combined against Barnet [in the Carabao Cup preliminary round last Tuesday] and Notts and they had just 31 per cent possession on Saturday, compared to 23 per cent at The Hive Stadium.
On the plus side, they have conceded just three times - thanks to some heroic defending from Lee Jenkins and James Clarke in particular, some poor finishing and the general excellence of new goalkeeper Nik Tzanev.
Hughes would argue that it has been a team effort and the two games so far have highlighted his players' willingness to dig in and work for each other when things are not going their way.
After Barnet, the manager admitted his side had "suffered" and that was something he prepared them for in pre-season with a trip to former Commonewealth super-bantamweight champion Jamie Arthur's gym in Rhydyfelin.
'It was almost like a mental toughness, conditioning session,' Hughes told The Guardian. 'It was just to try and take the group somewhere else...where you think about the skillset you need to be a boxer, they definitely suffer to win. And all we're trying to do is have a culture where we understand and appreciate that winning looks different at times. To win games of football, at times you've got to suffer.'
Speaking after Saturday's match, he praised the players' attitude: "We have provided a platform in these first two games to what needs to underpin our performances moving forward.
"The first pillar underpinning performance, for me, is a willingness to work tirelessly for your team and I think the reaction of the supporters afterwards tells you their feelings on the performance.
"They were really positive about the level of energy and intent the players showed. And that's the base level. What we have to do is add layers on top of that in key areas, but we're really pleased.
"There are areas we want to work on, but I think the lads should be immensely proud of themselves."

After suffering in the first half, Garner surprised most people inside Rodney Parade - possibly even himself and definitely the visiting defence - by ghosting into the area to nod in from Jenkins' long throw into the box from close range.
It was nowhere near as spectacular as Reindorf's rocket against Barnet, but it was just as welcome and it's a big positive that both new strikers have now found the net in their first competitive starts - especially after Garner's penalty miss in the shootout last week.
"From a confidence perspective, centre forwards will always judge themselves on goals and we're trying to get them into areas on the pitch [where they can threaten] and support them in key areas," explained Hughes.
"They come in different areas. I 'm sure Ged didn't think he'd be heading in a long throw from Lee, but they're really important.
To win games of football, you've got to find different ways of scoring a goal and we did that. We were a threat from set-plays."
(Image: Kian Abdullah/Huw Evans Agency)Harsh penalty
It looked a questionable decision at the time and, looking at the replays of the penalty incident, it appears as if the Exiles were hard done by when referee Peter Wright pointed to the spot following an innocuous-looking tangle between Matt Baker and Matt Dennis that started well outside the area.
The referee could easily have given a free-kick the other way but, to his credit, Hughes didn't take the opportunity to moan about the officials as some of his predecessors loved to do with tiresome regularty.
"If it was given for you, would you be disappointed? Probably not," he reflected. "It's a coming together; Matt's backing away, the centre forward is backing in, one loses balance. Who knows? It's such a contentious decision and it's gone against us. But, let's focus on the positives. I thought, to a man, everybody was outstanding."
The manager instead chose to vent his anger at the EFL over the scheduling of last week's cup tie and he will be pleased to have no Tuesday fixture this week.
"It's a really good start, but it is only a start," he added. "Let's not get too high when we've had a good performance. We have to follow this up with a really good week's work and another good performance at Crawley next Saturday."

Liverpool to REPLACE Federico Chiesa with £30m winger

Liverpool have a replacement in mind for , even before the Italian departs. The forward line has already gone through some significant changes this summer and we're set for more if the rumoured moves come to fruition. Each of the absentees will need to be replaced. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas home range 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the away range TODAY LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! We've already seen Hugo Ekitike join to help replace Darwin Nunez when he moves on and Diogo Jota's passing has sadly meant that another striker could join - Alexander Isak is highly favoured. Luis Diaz's move to Bayern Munich might result in Malick Fofana at Lyon being approached, although Cody Gakpo will be given an even bigger role in his absence and Rio Ngumoha's extraordinary performances throughout pre-season have given the Englishman hopes of some senior minutes. Since it's likely that Chiesa will leave, someone has already been identified as his replacement. Liverpool already have Chiesa's replacement Playing as Mohamed Salah's understudy was always going to be a difficult job. At times, you feel there might be an opportunity to play a substantial role in the team, but if you have a season where the Egyptian delivers 57 goal contributions, then you might feel shut-out on the sidelines. Slot didn't really know what to do with Chiesa last season and regular minutes are going to be essential if he has plans of making Italy's World Cup squad next summer. A move is understandable. Now that Salah has signed a new two-year deal with the club, you would expect him to have another main role in the team this season, which would be a spanner in the Italian's plans. But if you have a developing young player as his understudy at right-wing, then things start to make more sense. The 33-year-old Egyptian will need to be replaced eventually as he starts to slow down towards the end of his career, and having his successor develop alongside him would be a beneficial move. As such, it seems logical for Ben Doak to be promoted to the first team after a number of loan moves. He spent last season on loan with Middlesbrough in the Championship and he played a particularly extensive role, making featuring for 1787 minutes and delivering three goals and seven assists. In addition, he was heavily reported to have put most of the defenders he faced on skids, dribbling past them with relative ease, even despite him being marked by three opposition players at times. At Anfield on Monday afternoon, when the Reds played Athletic Bilbao in a pre-season friendly, he scored from a tight angle and delivered a pin-point ball into Ngumoha to assist the second goal.

The Good, Bad And Ugly From Day 10 Of Packers' Training Camp

Quay Walker and Tucker Kraft returned. Nate Hobbs was out with a knee injury that could sideline him a month. And Jordan Love had a terrific day. Those were the biggest takeaways from the Green Bay Packers' 10th training camp practice held on a beautiful Tuesday where temperatures were in the upper-70s. Green Bay's first preseason game is Saturday at 7 p.m. against the visiting New York Jets. Here's the good, bad and ugly from Tuesday's GOOD STARTERS WILL PLAY?: Quarterback Jordan Love and Green Bay's starters will all play against the Jets on Saturday. 'Well, they're football players, so everybody's got to go into it expecting to play,' Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. Love played in the preseason opener at Cleveland last season, where he went 2-for-2 for 63 yards, a touchdown and a perfect passer rating of 158.3. The highlight was a 65-yard touchdown pass to Dontayvion Wicks. Love exited after just one series in that Browns game, though, and didn't play in the final two preseason games LaFleur was asked if he'd have a similar plan in place for Love this year. 'We'll see,' LaFleur said. 'However I'm feeling in the moment. I just told all these guys just get ready to play football. Whenever we're ready to play you, we'll play you.' Former Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers didn't play in the preseason during the second half of his time in Green Bay. After Rodgers was traded before the 2023 season, though, LaFleur knew that Love — a first-time starter — needed exhibition games to get ready for the regular season. LaFleur liked how that worked out in 2023 and 2024 and will maintain that path in 2025. LET THERE BE LOVE: Quarterback Jordan Love, who's been sharp all summer, had one of his better practices. Love and Romeo Doubs hooked up on a 46-yard TD on a post route. Doubs beat safeties Evan Williams and Javon Bullard on the play. Love hit Jayden Reed for 23 yards on an out route against Bullard. And Love found Matthew Golden working against Keisean Nixon for 20 yards. WELCOME BACK: Linebacker Quay Walker did 11-on-11 work for the first time in training camp. Walker had offseason ankle surgery and was being brought back slowly. 'He is the quarterback of the defense,' Packers coach Matt LaFleur said of Walker. So, anytime you're missing that piece, that's a big piece. Not that we don't feel like we have other guys capable of doing that – we certainly feel good about that, and I think those guys have done a nice job – but we know what type of player Quay is and the level that he can play at. I thought there was a stretch last season where he was playing some really good football. He was getting more comfortable within our scheme, what we were asking him to do, and he was playing at a high level. So, it's been a while since he's played football, so he needs to get back ingrained into that. Obviously, the more reps he gets, the more comfortable I think he'll feel and the better he'll play. KRAFT RETURNS: Tight end Tucker Kraft, who missed Saturday's Family Night Scrimmage with a groin injury, returned to practice. THIS AND THAT: Brandon McManus drilled 57- and 56-yard field goals to continue to his remarkable summer. McManus did have just his second miss of camp — hitting the uprights from 53 yards out — and is now 44-of-46 on all kicks this summer (95.7%). … Mecole Hardman hauled in a 15-yard TD pass from No. 2 quarterback Malik Willis after a double move against Kalen King. … With Rasheed Walker out (groin), left tackle Jordan Morgan had a solid day. During 1-on-1 drills, Morgan stopped Lukas Van Ness twice and Kingsley Enagbare once. … King, a seventh round draft pick in 2024 who spent last season on the practice squad, broke up a screen pass for Malik Heath. … Micah Robinson broke up a pass for Julian Hicks. … The Packers signed offensive lineman Lecitus Smith after waiving wideout Sam Brown BAD FROM THE INFIRMARY: The biggest injury news was cornerback Nate Hobbs will miss the rest of the preseason after having surgery Aug. 2 for a partial meniscus tear (see below). Others that didn't practice included: running backs MarShawn Lloyd (groin) and Emanuel Wilson, offensive linemen Rasheed Walker (groin) and Travis Glover (shoulder), wideout Dontayvion Wicks, cornerback Kamal Hadden (hip) and defensive lineman Arron Mosby (groin). THIS AND THAT: Center Elgton Jenkins had his first bad snap of camp, sailing a shotgun snap over the head of Jordan Love. …THE UGLY Green Bay cornerback Nate Hobbs underwent knee surgery on Aug. 2to repair a partial meniscus tear. Sports Illustrated was first to report the news. Hobbs, who signed a four-year, $48 million free agent contract with the Packers in March, is expected to miss the remainder of training camp, but could be back for the season opener against Detroit on Sept. 7. 'I'm not going to put a timetable on it, but unfortunately he had to have something cleaned up,' Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Tuesday. 'We're hoping to get him back here sooner than later.' Hobbs missed six games with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024 and 16 in the last three seasons due to a bevy of injuries. Cornerback is undoubtedly the thinnest position on Green Bay's roster. Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine are the projected starters with Hobbs out. The top reserves are an inexperienced group that includes Kalen King, Micah Robinson, Bo Melton and Kamal Hadden, along with Corey Ballentine, who played in Green Bay from 2022-'24, then resigned with the Packers on Monday.

Brighton appoint new set-piece coach to Fabian Hurzeler's staff

Brighton & Hove Albion have appointed 39-year-old Belgian Yannick Euvrard as set-piece coach. Euvrard has been recruited from Brussels-based Anderlecht, where he held the same position for two years. He will be responsible for defensive and attacking set plays. Euvrard worked for the Royal Belgian Football Association on set pieces for four years before moving to Anderlecht in July 2023. David Weir, Brighton's technical director, said: 'Yannick has built up an excellent reputation in Belgium and we are pleased to bring in his expertise, in an area that continues to be game changing at our level.' We are pleased to confirm the appointment of Yannick Euvrard as our men's first team set-piece coach. 🤝 — Brighton & Hove Albion (@OfficialBHAFC) August 5, 2025 The arrival of Euvrard, a right-back in his playing career for KSV Roeselare, Weathering and OH Leuven, completes a refresh by head coach Fabian Hurzeler of his backroom team. Dutchman Jelle ten Roulewaar has joined from Leicester as goalkeeping coach in place of Jack Stern and Marco Knoop, who came with Hurzeler from St Pauli. Defensive set pieces formed part of Knoop's duties last season, while Hurzeler's assistant Jonas Scheuermann looked after attacking set plays. (KRISTOF VAN ACCOM/BELGA MAG/AFP via Getty Images)
