‘MLB: The Show' keeps the college sports trend alive

Washington Post02-04-2025
In 'MLB: The Show 25,' your created player is faced with a choice. Do you go directly to the league after high school? Or, do you enroll in college?
College offers you perks — like a powerful bat or glove — and some extra skill development. It is the more traditional path, after all. Heading straight to the league might make you progress more quickly, but the gameplay will be much more difficult since you're going from homeroom to home runs by Shohei Ohtani.

Ohtani takes the mound in series finale against Cardinals

Ohtani takes the mound in series finale against Cardinals originally appeared on The Sporting News The St. Louis Cardinals are looking to end their six-game California road trip on a high note this afternoon with a series win against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Just one problem—they'll have to get past two-way star Shohei Ohtani, who takes the mound for his eighth start this season, per CBS Sports. However, Ohtani's last appearance on July 30 didn't go according to plan as he slowly transitions back into a full-time starter after undergoing Tommy John revision surgery in 2023. Slated to pitch four innings at Cincinnati, Ohtani left after 3.0 IP and 51 pitches, allowing 2 ER on 5 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts. He was later diagnosed with a cramp in his hip. The Cardinals have seen Ohtani once before, scoring 4 ER on him in 5.0 innings in 2023 when he was still with the Los Angeles Angels. But Ohtani still has a 2.99 ERA over six MLB seasons, and in seven starts this year, he's recorded a 2.40 ERA (4 ER in 15.0 IP). St. Louis split the first 2 games of this series, including a 3-2 win on Monday and a 12-6 loss last night. Scheduled to oppose Ohtani is left-hander Matthew Liberatore, who is 3-3 with a 3.53 ERA (14 ER in 35.2 IP) over his last 7 starts. At 1 game below .500, the Cardinals (57-58) are fighting for an NL Wild Card spot and sit 6.5 games behind the New York Mets and San Diego Padres in the playoff race. A win over Ohtani and the Dodgers today would mark their first series victory since July 8-10 vs. the Washington Nationals (2-1).

Shohei Ohtani is back on the mound after injury scare. Here's how to watch his start vs. St. Louis

For the eighth time this summer, Shohei Ohtani will both hit and pitch in the same game. Every double-duty outing is worth watching, but his Los Angeles Dodgers are just 4-3 in these spots, and Ohtani is coming off his worst start of the season. He left Cincinnati last week with cramping in his right hip, but avoided injury and was cleared to keep throwing. Even after those rough few innings, Ohtani carries a 2.40 ERA … while leading the National League in runs, slugging and OPS. Let's see how he looks in a Wednesday matinee with the St. Louis Cardinals. The reigning and presumed MVP had some trouble against the Reds. He allowed season highs in hits (5), walks (2) and earned runs (2). That outing ended … awkwardly, and in the middle of an at-bat: Ohtani The Pitcher did bump is K/9 mark up to an impressive 10.2, and he notched eight swinging strikes in 53 pitches. Ohtani The Batter is on a whiff streak, with a dispiriting nine strikeouts across his first five games of August. He hit .204 in July, but slugged nine homers in 24 games. Before their 12-6 win over the Cardinals on Tuesday night, L.A.'s offense as a whole had been tremendously underwhelming of late, ranking 29th (!) in slugging percentage in the previous 30 days. The only team trailing them in that metric was the Tampa Bay Rays, whose payroll is almost four times smaller. Advertisement The Dodgers still sit atop the NL West, but the San Diego Padres are heating up and mounting a charge. Their Wednesday opponents come in at fourth place in a crowded NL Central, but a resurgent stretch would put the Cardinals in striking distance for a final wild-card spot. St. Louis' front office sold at the trade deadline, though the core of Masyn Winn, Brendan Donovan, Willson Contreras and Victor Scott II has enough punch to threaten an upset at Chavez Ravine. The Dodgers are good at home, but they've been all kinds of inconsistent this summer. Matthew Liberatore (6-9, 3.96 ERA) is the Cardinals pitcher to counter Ohtani. He comes in at the 96 percentile for off-speed run value, and has shown strong command over a six-pitch arsenal that includes a sinker and cutter.
