How did the Boston Celtics win the 1974 NBA Finals?
How did the Boston Celtics win the 1974 NBA Finals? The short version is they used a very bold strategy to pull it off. But the longer version is quite the tale, which had the Celtics defeat the might Milwaukee Bucks helmed by future Los Angeles Lakers nemesis Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Hall of Fame wing John Havlicek was the star of the series, eventually earning the Finals Most Valuable Player award for the series, but it was then-Celtics head coach Tommy Heinsohn who had Hondo serve as a decoy as the series was tied 3-3 heading into Game 7. Star big man Dave Cowens took over, and the gamble paid off big.
The folks behind the "NBC Sports Boston" YouTube channel put together a clip detailing that Celtics history snapshot. Check it out below!

How bad will things get for the Boston Celtics next season?
Expectations are low for the Boston Celtics as we head into the 2025-26 season. Joe Mazzulla's roster has lost a significant amount of talent this summer, with a host of young, unproven talent taking their place. As such, it's hard to envision the Celtics ending the campaign with a winning record, even in a weakened Eastern Conference. Of course, it's easy to forget that Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser are still on the roster, all of whom played large parts in the franchise's 2024 championship. Nevertheless, there's a serious lack of depth within Mazzulla's roster, especially in the front court, where things could get ugly as the season progresses. During a recent episode of "The Players' Choice" podcast, the hosting panel debated how bad things are going to get for the Celtics next season. Could they make the playoffs? Does the play-in tournament beckon? Or, could Mazzulla's team drop out of the postseason race completely and prioritize a high draft pick? Can the Boston Celtics shock the NBA next season?
Brad Stevens has overseen a significant amount of change with the Boston Celtics roster this summer. As part of the retooling process, he's signed multiple young talents that have struggled to make their mark since entering the NBA. The hope is that with a bigger and more consistent role, at least some of the new additions can increase their market value in the coming months. Joe Mazzulla will now be tasked with leading a young and inexperienced rotation. Some players will likely get to earn a spot on the next championship-contending team, while others will potentially be flipped in the future when Stevens decides to go back star-hunting. Still, the first step is ensuring the current roster can find ways of being competitive in the coming months. During a recent discussion between Wes Goldberg and Matt Moore for "Real GM Radio," the duo discussed how the current Celtics roster can defy expectations heading into the new season. It's worth remembering that while there are some legitimate questions about Boston's current roster, it does still boast Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser.
