If you've ever wondered why your baby naps inconsistently, the answer may lie not in parenting guides or alarm clocks—but in mathematics.
A new study by researchers from the University of Surrey, England, has applied mathematical modeling to explain how and why sleep patterns change over a lifetime.
The research focused on refining a long-standing concept known as the two-process model ("2PM") of sleep regulation, originally introduced in the 1980s, which considers both biological sleep pressure (how the longer you are awake, the more sleepy you get) and our internal body clocks to understand when and how we sleep.
But this latest study takes the model further, incorporating the mathematics of light exposure to show how environmental cues—like indoor lighting or late-night screen time—interact with biology to shape our sleep.
The result is an expanded "2PM plus light" model that offers a unified explanation for a host of sleep mysteries—from unpredictable baby naps to the early morning habits of older adults.

"This model gives us hope that sleep problems can be better understood and tackled," said paper author and mathematician professor Anne Skeldon of the University of Surrey in a statement.
"By using math, we can see how small changes in light, routine or biology shift our sleep—and test practical ways to support better sleep for everyone."
One of the more curious phenomena explained by the model is why babies nap on some days but not others, even when their schedule seems consistent.
Oscillator theorists refer to this behavior as the Devil's staircase—a mathematical term for sudden jumps or skips in patterns.
The researchers showed how the interplay between a baby's rising sleep pressure and immature circadian rhythms can create seemingly erratic nap behavior that, in reality, follows a mathematically predictable pattern.
The same model explains why teenagers tend to go to bed and wake up later than younger children.
The mathematical simulations revealed that adolescents experience a slower buildup of sleep pressure, allowing them to stay awake longer.
Combined with bright light exposure in the evening—from devices, indoor lighting or nighttime socializing—this can delay their sleep even further, shifting their rhythms into a cycle that is out of sync with early school start times.
With models like 2PM plus light, scientists can simulate the impact of small changes in lighting, bedtime routines or social schedules—potentially leading to personalized interventions for people struggling with sleep in our increasingly 24/7 world.
"This work shows how math can bring clarity to something as complex and personal as sleep," said paper co-author and Surrey sleep researcher professor Derk-Jan Dijk.
"With the right data and models, we can give more tailored advice and develop novel interventions to improve sleep patterns for those whose rest is affected by modern routines, ageing or health conditions," he concluded.

Now, he's a smelling machine and can't get enough whiffs of everything around him. Newsweek reached out to the owners via email for additional information and comment. What Do the Comments Say? With over 5,770 comments, the TikTok video started a debate among viewers. Many fell in love with Kygo's precious reaction, calling him the "goodest sniffer." "Sniffing in HD now," wrote a viewer, while another pointed out: "The way he looked at you after the first sniff was like, 'Omg, you right!'" A third user commented: "He looks like he's suspicious about his newfound sense of smell." However, others believed this clip shined a light on the dangers of breeding dogs. They claimed the surgery could have been avoided. "The fact we have to perform this surgery on some breeds in the first place is HIGHLY upsetting," a person said. The speed of your steps could make a significant difference in adding years to your life, according to a new study. Researchers led by a team from Vanderbilt University in the US analyzed the physical activity of 79,856 adults in 12 US states, comparing links between time spent walking slowly, time spent walking quickly, and eventual cause of death (where applicable) across an average follow-up period of almost 17 years. The data showed that those people who spent at least a quarter of an hour each day walking briskly were significantly less likely to die during the study period, especially from cardiovascular disease. What makes the findings particularly useful is they're based on a sample that includes people typically underrepresented in walking studies like this: the cohort was predominantly made up of low-income and Black individuals, who are often more likely to live in impoverished areas and less likely to have access to safe walking spaces. Related: "Our research has shown that fast walking as little as 15 minutes a day was associated with a nearly 20 percent reduction in total mortality, while a smaller reduction in mortality was found in association with more than three hours of daily slow walking," says epidemiologist Wei Zheng, from Vanderbilt University "This benefit remained strong even after accounting for other lifestyle factors and was consistent across various sensitivity analyses." The researchers categorized slow walking as walking the dog, or walking around at work. To qualify for the faster walking linked to the reduction in the risk of death, it had to be something like climbing stairs or walking briskly as part of an exercise routine. While the study isn't comprehensive enough to show direct cause and effect, the drop in mortality risk is significant enough to strongly suggest some kind of link, and the researchers think the benefits that aerobic exercise brings to heart health is key. Fast walking makes the heart work harder, improving cardiovascular health. Burning calories can also help people stick to a healthy weight. "While the health benefits of daily walking are well established, limited research has investigated the effects of factors such as walking pace on mortality, particularly in low-income and Black/African-American populations," says Zheng. One of the reasons that researchers are so keen to promote walking as a way of staying healthy is that it's just about the simplest exercise out there: most of us can do it, without any special equipment, and it's relatively easy to roll into a daily routine (try parking a little further away from work, for example). "Public health campaigns and community-based programs can emphasize the importance and availability of fast walking to improve health outcomes, providing resources and support to facilitate increased fast walking within all communities," says epidemiologist Lili Liu, from Vanderbilt University. The research has been published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine. The researchers, led by Natasha Lubke from Charles Sturt University in Australia, analyzed 45 videos posted on social media and documented multiple different moves ranging from headbanging to sidesteps, foot taps and body rolls. About 17 of these dancing behaviors had never before been described in scientific literature. Surprisingly, closely related species did not display more similar dances than others, and each species had a unique top 10 most common dance moves. The study also examined six cockatoos from the Wagga Wagga zoo in Australia, pairing them with birds of the opposite sex, and exposing them to different settings including music, podcasts and silence. The birds danced regardless of the background. Some of the most commonly identified moves—which are depicted below—include downward bending, foot lifting, fluffing feathers and turning around. Moreover, motivation to interact with the other sex may have overridden any attention or response to the music. Dancing behaviors are present in at least 10 out of 21 species of cockatoo—and many of their moves are similar to the courtship displays of wild parrots. This suggests that their dancing may have originated as courtship behavior that has been redirected towards their owners. The study also notes that dance behavior might fit the definition of play, as it is initiated voluntarily by the birds, and it appears to be intrinsically rewarding. This means that music might actually serve as enrichment for them. "As well as supporting the presence of positive emotions in birds and advancing dance behavior as an excellent model to study parrot emotions, the work suggests that playing music to parrots may provide a useful approach to enrich their lives in captivity, with positive effects on their welfare," Lubke said in a statement. However, paper coauthor professor Rafael Freire added that further research is necessary to determine whether or not music can actually trigger dance in captive birds and serve as a form of environmental enrichment.
