Kilmarnock ace 'excited' by season ahead but admits they must improve on Kelty showing

Daily Record24-07-2025
The 31-year-old admitted it was a frustrating evening in Fife but sees plenty of positives as the league season approaches
Kilmarnock midfielder Rory McKenzie knows his side's display against Kelty Hearts wasn't good enough - but he refuses to be too downcast following their Premier Sports Cup penalty shoot-out defeat in Fife.

Killie would have taken a huge step towards confirming their place in the knockout stages if they'd picked up the points at New Central Park, but a string of fine saves from Ryan Adamson thwarted their hopes.

And the stopper, only in the team because Corey Armour was ineligible to face his parent club, saved two penalties in the shoot-out to give the hosts the bonus point.

Despite the disappointment, it's still a case of win and in for Killie as they know three points at home to East Fife on Saturday will see them finish as Group H winners and progress.
McKenzie said: 'We didn't really create much to be honest, a draw was probably a fair result. I thought Kelty were really impressive on the night and we just didn't do enough to score.
"If we win on Saturday we still go through so it's still in our hands. Everyone looking at it from the outside just expects the bigger teams to roll the smaller teams over but it's not the case. Yes, we should be better but these games are always tough.

"We're not happy after that, it wasn't good enough but the positive is that it's in our own hands. It is a clean sheet and George (Stanger) has come in and done really well this season so we'll take the small positives.'
It's been a summer of change for Killie as McKenzie enters his 15th season at the club. A new manager along with a whole host of exits and new faces - and the 31-year-old admits he's seeing plenty to get excited about.
He said: 'It's a big change, the way we want to play. It's going to take time but we're all positive even after this result that we're going in the right direction. The majority have been with us since the start of pre-season and came to Holland with us. It's a good bunch and I'm excited.
"I'm not a huge talker but if boys want to chat to me, I'm more than happy to talk about the club. I guess that comes with that respect of being here for so long that they know they can come and talk to me. Having boys who are familiar with the club can help.'

West Brom loanee returns to parent club amid Motherwell injury woe

The Steelmen have issued an injury update on Eseosa Sule Motherwell have announced that forward Eseosa Sule is set to be "missing for a period of time" due to injury and has returned to parent club West Brom for treatment. ‌ The 19-year-old joined the Steelmen on a season-long loan this summer but just one game into the Premiership campaign, he will play no part in Jens Berthel Askou's plans for the foreseeable future. ‌ He played in three of the club's Premier Sports Cup clashes last month but missed Saturday's 1-1 draw at home to Rangers. ‌ Motherwell have remained tight-lipped on both the nature of his injury and the time he will spend on the sidelines with a club statement saying: "After constant and continuous communication between both clubs since the injury occurred, it has been decided that the West Brom loanee will return to his parent club to begin the rehabilitation process and will return to Motherwell when he has completed his recovery." Fir Park gaffer Askou added: "Eseosa has made a very good impression since he arrived and was growing with the team and developing really well until his injury. 'It's very unfortunate for him and us that we will now be missing him for a while. We all look forward to his return to full fitness and for him to continue his journey with us on the pitch.' Sule said on his Instagram page: "Gutted to be missing the start of the season, but I'll be back stronger."

St Johnstone's proposed loan move for Hearts defender Adam Forrester is making progress and could be finalised in a matter of days. The Edinburgh News revealed on Tuesday that the Scottish Championship side had approached Tynecastle officials about a season-long deal for the 20-year-old right-back, and talks have moved forward since then. St Johnstone are pushing to complete Forrester's loan before Friday night's league trip to Ross County as they want him involved in that fixture. A deal has been verbally agreed after Hearts said they would be willing to loan out the Riccarton youth academy graduate. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He needs more first-team experience in a competitive environment and St Johnstone intend to use him as their first-choice right-back this season. Forrester made 34 appearances for the Tynecastle side last term after breaking into the senior side in September during Liam Fox's first spell as interim head coach. Since Derek McInnes took charge, nine new signings have arrived in Gorgie, including Norwegian right-back Christian Borchgrevink from Valerenga. Forrester played only 45 minutes during Hearts' four Premier Sports Cup games last month, and was not involved in Monday night's opening Premiership win against Aberdeen as Borchgrevink took the right wing-back position. Saints were relegated from the Scottish Premiership last season and head coach Simo Valakari is determined to return to the top flight at the first time of asking. Their Championship campaign began on Saturday with a resounding 5-1 win against Partick Thistle at McDiarmid Park. Reghan Tumilty started the match at right-back, with Forrester already targeted for a loan transfer. Hearts transfer news - latest signing arrives Meanwhile, Hearts completed their ninth summer signing earlier today after the Burkina Faso internationalist Pierre Landry Kabore finally received his UK work permit. He agreed a three-year deal to move from the Estonian club JK Narva Trans after first arriving in Edinburgh a month ago. After a protracted immigration process, the 24-year-old is now ready to begin his career in Scotland. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Kabore played played in this year's Estonian Meistriliiga, which runs from March till November, and is fit to begin playing for Hearts. He could be involved in Sunday's Premiership visit to Dundee United but will first be assessed in training by McInnes and his staff. Kabore scored 22 goals in 20 league and cup appearances for Narva Trans this season and holds two senior caps for Burkina Faso. Able to operate on the right or left flank, many of his goals in Estonia were scored from a striker's role. Hearts are likely to use him across their attacking line during the season ahead. 'It's obviously taken a bit longer than we'd have liked to get Landry in but he's here now and I'm pleased to get it done,' McInnes told the official Hearts website. 'His stats over the past couple of seasons speak for themselves so we're hoping he'll bring something a bit different to what we've currently got in our forward areas. 'He's a big, mobile guy and very adaptable in that he can play across the front, so that versatility is a big plus. Scotland will be a new culture for him so we'll show patience in terms of getting him up to speed but he's shown he can integrate quickly from his time Estonia and we'll do everything we can to make Landry a success at Hearts.'

Edinburgh club hit with a 15-point SPFL deduction - but plan to appeal

Edinburgh City have today been hit with a 15-point deduction by the Scottish Professional Football League relating to an insolvency event. The League Two side appointed a provisional liquidator in July this year, and league officials have reacted with a hefty punishment to leave City isolated at the foot of the table. An SPFL statement read: 'The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has today confirmed the imposition of a 15-point deduction for Edinburgh City, as per SPFL rules on clubs suffering an insolvency event. This deduction follows a provisional liquidator being appointed in respect of the club on July 22 this year in relation to an unpaid debt due by the club. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Similar to administration, the provisional appointment of a liquidator is an insolvency event under SPFL Rules. The William Hill League Two table has been updated accordingly.' Rule E1 of the SPFL rules and regulations states that 'where a club takes, suffers or is subject to a deductible insolvency event that club shall…be deducted 15 points and 5 points in the League in consecutive seasons'. City intend to appeal the decision and posted a comment on their social media channels. 'Edinburgh City FC hereby acknowledges the penalty imposed upon it by the SPFL this morning,' they said. 'The club will begin its appeal process immediately. No further comment will be made at this time.' Edinburgh City began their League Two campaign on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat against Stirling Albion at Meadowbank. Their Premier Sports Cup campaign ended miserably with 4-1 and 4-0 defeats against Partick Thistle and Queen of the South respectively. Following a 0-0 draw with Stranraer - City won 5-3 on penalties - the Capital side then suffered a demoralising 8-0 loss at Ross County. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad SPFL League Two table sees Edinburgh club rooted at the bottom A difficult start to the season has now gone from bad to worse with a points deduction which will leave Michael McIndoe's team battling to avoid relegation to the Lowland League this season. As an instant result of today's SPFL sanction, they have been left 15 points adrift at the bottom of League Two. The SPFL moved to deduct Hamilton Academical 15 points last season for breaking various league rules, which led to their relegation from the Championship to League One. Accies also appealed at the time but an independent Scottish FA disciplinary tribunal found the Lanarkshire club guilty of four offences, including the non-payment of players and not acting in "good faith" when dealing with the governing body regarding a previous transfer ban. Hamilton chairman Jock Brown said in a statement at the time: 'The club is obviously very disappointed at the outcome of the appeal to the SFA tribunal, where the decision of the SPFL tribunal was upheld with the result that the 15-point deduction stands. The board is prevented from making any further comment on the matter by SPFL regulations but will communicate further with supporters in early course.'
