At the close of Day 4, England were 339/6 after 76.2 overs, needing 35 runs to win, with Jamie Smith (2*) and Jamie Overton (0*) at the crease. India's hopes rested on their pace attack, led by Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna.
Chris Woakes, nursing a dislocated shoulder, was expected to bat only as a last resort. A brief rain interruption and bad light had halted play on Day 4, setting up a nail-biting final day. The morning of Day 5 dawned with heavy cloud cover, promising assistance for India's seamers, but rain loomed as a potential spoiler.
77th Over (Prasidh Krishna)
Jamie Overton, facing his first ball of the day, goes on the attack to disrupt India's rhythm.
Showing aggressive intent, Overton hits back-to-back boundaries, pushing the home side closer. England fans dare to dream, as the mood in the Indian camp is tense. England, now 347/6, needed 27 to win.

Atkinson and Overton manage to sneak in three runs off the last ball. England 353/7 at the end of the over, needing 21 for victory.

Both bails fly, and The Oval erupts. England nine down, needing 17. Chris Woakes, with his dislocated shoulder, walks out to a standing ovation.
Woakes' brave entry adds a tinge of heroism to the narrative, but India sense blood. The equation shifts dramatically.
84th Over (Mohammed Siraj)
Atkinson takes charge. He sends Siraj over deep midwicket for a six. Fielder Akash Deep miscalculates and tips it over the cow-corner boundary. The crowd is electrified, closing the gap to 11 runs needed. The field is spread to prevent boundaries. England 364/9 at the end of the over.
85th Over (Prasidh Krishna)

Star England cricketer mocks Glenn MCGrath's BOLD 5-0 Ashes prediction for 2025-26, due to...

Glenn McGrath Former England pacer Stuart Broad mocked Glenn McGrath's 5-0 Ashes prediction favoring Australia for the 2025-26 series. Broad advised McGrath to wait for the tournament to begin, as it is almost four months away. With the five-match series ending in a 2-2 draw, Ben Stokes' England was unable to defeat a transitional Indian team, which may have led McGrath to conclude that Australia has a definite advantage in the Ashes. The 2010–11 Ashes was the last time England defeated Australia at home, and they have had trouble on subsequent tours there. It was their last Test victory in the country. McGrath's Ashes prediction 'It's very rare for me to make a prediction, isn't it? And I can't make a different one, 5-0. I'm very confident with our team. When you've got Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon firing in their home conditions, it's going to be pretty tough,' McGrath said while speaking on BBC. 'Plus, that track record England have had, it'd be interesting to see if they can win a Test. I love seeing sportspeople go out there and play without fear,' he added Stuart Broad mocks McGrath's prediction In response to the former Australian pacer's prediction, Broad joked that he could have at least waited to make it until England had arrived in Australia 'It's August!! At least let us land, Glenn,' Broad tweeted on Friday afternoon. Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney are the five venues where the 2025 Men's Ashes will take place. Beginning on January 4, 2026, the fifth Test at the SCG will mark the conclusion of the series. As part of the Seven Network's coverage of the Ashes, Broad will join the commentary panel and share his thoughts. Australia has only lost two of their last 15 home Test matches and won 4-0 in 2021–2022.

It subsequently confirmed that these contracts would be extended in accordance with established procedures. 'The AIFF would like to assure that these contracts shall be renewed in accordance with the established procedures, subject to the existing process of the Elite Referees' Development Programme,' the statement said. ''The AIFF urges all parties to remain calm, as several competitions are currently ongoing, where many of our referees are officiating in matches, like in Durand Cup, and the Futsal Club Championship,' said the statement. The statement comes in the backdrop of uncertainty about the status of the Indian football calendar for the 2025-26 season. In a recent press conference, AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey confirmed that the Super Cup would be held before the Indian Super League. Multiple clubs including Bengaluru FC and Chennaiyin FC have suspended activities to differing degrees amidst a lack of clarity about how the season will proceed. Related Topics AIFF

Mohammed Siraj's special tribute? Virat Kohli's final Test jersey framed at India star's house in viral picture

Mohammed Siraj, the star Indian pacer, has captured the hearts of cricket fans with a touching tribute to his mentor, Virat Kohli. A viral picture circulating on social media shows Kohli's final Test jersey, autographed and framed, displayed on the wall of Siraj's home in Hyderabad. This jersey, from Kohli's last Test match during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney, is a testament to the deep bond between the two cricketers. The image, shared by Siraj's manager with the caption 'Believe,' has melted fans' hearts, showcasing the respect and admiration Siraj holds for Kohli. The framed jersey is from the Sydney Test, where both teams wore pink-themed kits to support a breast cancer awareness campaign. Marked with 'Virat 18' in pink, the jersey represents Kohli's final appearance in Test whites, a moment that shocked the cricketing world when he announced his retirement in May 2025. For Siraj, this piece of cricket history is a cherished symbol of mentorship and friendship. The jersey, signed by Kohli, was gifted to Siraj after the match, symbolizing the trust and support Kohli has shown him throughout his career. Siraj and Kohli's relationship goes beyond the cricket field. Kohli, as captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru and later Team India, played a pivotal role in shaping Siraj's career. From backing him during tough times to giving him his Test debut during the 2020 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Kohli's faith in Siraj transformed the pacer from a raw talent into a world-class bowler. Siraj has often referred to Kohli as his 'superhero,' a sentiment echoed in an emotional post after Kohli's Test retirement, where he wrote, 'Dressing room won't be the same without you.' This framed jersey is a living tribute to that mentorship and friendship. The timing of the viral picture aligns with Siraj's remarkable performance in the recent Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, where he emerged as the leading wicket-taker with 23 scalps across five Tests. His standout performance came at The Oval, where he claimed nine wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the second innings, securing a thrilling six-run victory for India. Kohli praised Siraj's resilience, stating, 'Great win by Team India. Resilience and determination from Siraj and Prasidh have given us this phenomenal victory. Special mention to Siraj, who will put everything on the line for the team.' Siraj's heartfelt reply, 'Thank you bhaiya for 'Believe'ing in me,' further highlighted their bond.
