Jensen Ackles goes full action star in first 'Countdown' trailer
"If I'm going out, I'm going out saving something." Mark Meachum is sounding a lot like Dean Winchester right now.
In the first trailer for Countdown, Prime Video's new series from One Chicago's Derek Haas, Jensen Ackles' Mark Meachum is seen joining a task force put together by Eric Dane's Nathan Blythe.
"You are the best or I would not have selected you," Blythe tells his team, which also includes Luke Finau (Uli Latukefu), Evan Shepherd (Violett Beane), Keyonte Bell (Elliot Knight), and Amber Oliveras (Jessica Camacho).
As the team talks about bombs going off in their faces and working to stop a weapon of mass destruction, it's revealed that whatever the task force is doing, they're trying to stop a "Chernobyl-level event" from occurring in Los Angeles.
The series' official description reads: "When an officer with the Department of Homeland Security is murdered in broad daylight, LAPD detective Mark Meachum, portrayed by Ackles, is recruited to a secret task force, alongside undercover agents from all branches of law enforcement, to investigate. But the hunt for the killer soon uncovers a plot far more sinister than anyone could have imagined, kicking off a race against time to save a city of millions."
As showrunner Haas previously told Entertainment Weekly, "Putting this disparate group together and then emphasizing different strengths is what makes the show. And watching as they come together as a team. I think that's what the viewers are going to find really interesting."Ackles, best known for playing Dean Winchester across 15 seasons of Supernatural, is no stranger to action, though even Dean would be impressed with some of the shots of him walking away from exploding vehicles or ... standing on top of moving ones.
As Ackles told EW, "I actually just did some ADR the other day for an action sequence. I was watching it and I was like, 'Oh, I'm getting my Tom Cruise on here. This is some full-on action stuff.'"
Watch all of the action unfold in the trailer above.
Countdown premieres Wednesday, June 25 on Prime Video with the first three episodes before switching to a weekly rollout.

'Top Gun 3' story 'wasn't hard' to figure out, Christopher McQuarrie teases: 'It's already in the bag'
Cue the Elle Woods "What, like it's hard?" jokes. Fresh off the success of their latest Mission: Impossible team up in The Final Reckoning, Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie are in a good place to get back in the saddle together again with Top Gun 3 — in fact, McQuarrie teases the story is "already in the bag," and it "wasn't hard" to do it. In a recent conversation on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, McQuarrie, who co-wrote and produced Top Gun: Maverick, was asked if a third film was "harder to crack" than the long-awaited Maverick, to which he quickly answered, 'No, it's already in the bag.' 'It wasn't hard,' McQuarrie said. 'I thought it would be, and that's a good place to go from as you walk into the room going, 'Come on, what are we going to do?' And [Maverick co-writer] Ehren Kruger pitched something, and I went, 'Mmm actually,' and we had one conversation about it, and the framework is there. So, no, it's not hard to crack. The truth of the matter is, none of these are hard to crack.' He added that it's the emotion behind the story that is the most difficult aspect to get right. "It's as you start to execute it, and as you start to interrogate it, as you start [to think] why these movies are made the way they are,' he added. 'It's not the action, it's not even the level of or intensity of or the scope and scale of the action [or] the engineering around the action, it's none of those things — it's the emotion.' McQuarrie's comments echo ones made by Cruise during an interview earlier in May, when he said both a Top Gun 3 and sequel to his 1990 racing film Days of Thunder were actively being discussed. 'Yeah, we're thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what's possible,' Cruise told Today Show Australia at the time. 'It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we're working on, we're discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick." A sequel to the 1986 classic, Top Gun: Maverick was the epitome of peak summer blockbuster when it soared into theaters in May 2022. The film — which starred Cruise, Glen Powell, Miles Teller, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly, and more — earned $1.48 billion at the global box office, making it the 12th highest-grossing film of all time. It was also nominated for six Oscars, taking home the award for Best also previously hinted at his return as Hangman while visiting The Kelly Clarkson Show last May. "It's above my pay grade," he admitted when asked if a third film was happening, "but, yeah, I have a feeling there's probably a cockpit with my name on it." Puck first reported in January 2024 that a Top Gun 3 was in the works at Paramount, with Kruger on tap to pen the script, and Maverick director Joseph Kosinski in talks to return as well. Crosby, Shanahan, Rantanen And More NHLers Should Give Season 2 Of 'Faceoff' Intriguing Storylines
The NHL talent starring in the second season of Prime Video's behind-the-scenes series should make for some must-watch moments. NHL and Prime Video collaborated for a second season of their popular Faceoff: Inside the NHL streaming TV series. Advertisement Pittsburgh Penguins icon Sidney Crosby, Dallas Stars right winger Mikko Rantanen, brothers Matthew and Brady Tkachuk and Toronto Maple Leafs right winger William Nylander are some players featured in Season 2. Los Angeles Kings stars Anze Kopitar and Quinton Byfield, now-former Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan, retiring Minnesota Wild star goalie Marc-Andre Fleury and Columbus Blue Jackets players Sean Monahan and Zach Werenski are also in the series. That's a cast that has a wide variety of personalities. Seeing Hockey Hall of Famers like Shanahan and surefire Hall of Famers like Fleury and Crosby really adds to the appeal of this series. Marc-Andre Fleury and Sidney Crosby (Matt Blewett-Imagn Images) To be sure, these types of documentaries always have something for casual and hardcore hockey fans alike. And this season's dramatic moments – including the all-time goal-scoring race from Washington Capitals right winger Alexander Ovechkin, as well as the high drama of the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament – would be great to see behind the scenes. Advertisement But Rantanen getting a major surprise when the Colorado Avalanche traded him to the Carolina Hurricanes, which later sent him to the Stars, is an intriguing storyline. Of course, seeing Monahan, Werenski and the Blue Jackets playing out this season while grieving the loss of teammate Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew Gaudreau, could hopefully help the rest of the hockey community remember the brothers and continue their legacies. As we know, the NHL continues to try and market the personalities of the game – not always an easy task, given how guarded many players and management members can be – so this new series is welcome content for the game. The intricacies and subtleties of the sport are magnified in these documentaries, and that can only be a good thing for all involved. We want there to be a heightened sense of the stakes involved for people across the league, and we're drawn in by exclusive moments that will stay with fans for quite some time to come. As the hockey documentary genre evolves, it will be intriguing to see what new angles are explored in this season of the show. The main hook for the series is all about access that we might not otherwise have, but if this doc pushes the envelope in one regard or another, that will set it apart from your garden-variety sports series. Netflix's Dept. Q ending, that left Matthew Goode in tears, explained
Dept. Q ends on an dramatic note, and one that is so emotional even lead star Matthew Goode found himself in tears, he tells Yahoo Netflix thriller follows detective Carl Morck (Matthew Goode) who returns to work after surviving an attack that left his partner paralysed and another officer dead. The grizzly English cop isn't well liked in the Edinburgh force, and to keep him out of the way he's assigned his own cold case department where he and a motley crew of outsiders decide to look into the mysterious disappearance of prosecutor Merritt Lingard (Chloe Pirrie) four years earlier. Goode was moved to tears by the chain of events in the series, with the actor sharing: "Actually I found it really moving, I was quietly surprised at how it all sort of came together. "I remember I was just doing some ADR where we re-record dialogue and Scott [Frank, the show's creator] was like, 'would you like to watch this?' And I was like, 'OK'. He doesn't normally do that so I think he was quietly proud of it. And, yeah, I shed a tear, I did." The Downton Abbey star joked that he was emotional because he thought "'Thank God it works!'" The story centres on Carl and his team trying to find out what happened to Merritt Lingard, who disappeared off a ferry four years earlier under mysterious circumstances. Most have written her off as having died by suicide after jumping of the boat, but Carl, Akram (Alexej Manvelov) and Rose (Leah Byrne) are convinced she could still be alive and want to piece together what happened. The trio, it turns out, are right, and Merritt has been kidnapped and held in a pressurised container by two people who are determined to make her guess for herself why she was taken. Merritt is kept there for years as she counts all the people she wronged or hurt in her life, eventually landing on the answer as the clock begins to run out. Merritt was taken by mother and son duo Ailsa and Lyle Jennings (Alison Peebles and Steven Miller), who committed the crime because they blame Merritt for the death of Lyle's older brother Harry. The teen died whilst trying to escape custody after he'd robbed Merritt's house and beaten her brother so badly he could no longer speak. Ailsa believe it's Merritt who put Harry, her then boyfriend, up to committing the robbery, thus starting the chain of events that led to his death, but Merritt sees it differently and refuses to take the blame. As time runs out on Merritt's survival, Carl and Akram put the pieces together successfully — realising that Lyle Jennings posed as journalist Sam Haig to seduce Merritt, gain her trust and kidnap her. Carl and Akram manage to get to the location where Merritt is being kept just in time to stop her from being killed in the pressurised container. The pair kill Lyle in the process and save Merritt, and Ailsa dies by suicide when she realises what the police have done. Goode adds that Pirrie deserved credit for such a "powerful" and "brave performance" as Merritt, to which his co-star Byrne said: "She was so incredible, I met Chloe on the first day when we were doing costume and makeup fittings, and met her in the green room and we had an hour to get to know each other, chat, and then I just didn't see her again. She was alone for the whole thing." Goode joked: "Well I said to her 'it would be really nice to work with you someday!'" "So it's so great to see what she's done," Byrne adds. "It's so incredible. She's done such an incredible job." The series sees Merritt return to normal life, revealing she will return home with her brother and reconnect with her estranged father. In the meantime Dept. Q get back up and running, with James Hardy [Jamie Sives], Carl's partner, returning to the force in the very last scene. This was another moment that left Goode emotional, as he said: "It's also Jamie's character, bless his little cotton socks." Dept. Q is out now on Netflix.
