Boy, 3, 'left alone' before fatal dog attack on farm

Yahoo9 hours ago
A three-year-old boy who died in a dog attack on a farm was left unsupervised with "dangerous" and "aggressive" animals for at least 15 minutes, a court has been told.
Daniel Twigg was attacked after letting himself into a fenced yard where the two dogs - described as being large mastiffs - were kept on Carr Farm, Rochdale, on 15 May 2022. He suffered injuries including bites to the neck and died at the scene.
His parents Joanne Bedford and Mark Twigg have denied gross negligence manslaughter and offences under the Dangerous Dogs Act.
Their trial at Manchester Crown Court was told the incident was "not a short rapid attack".
Daniel's family had moved to the farm in March 2022 to look after the property and several dogs who belonged to the farm's owner, Matthew Brown, the court heard.
The two dogs that attacked Daniel - named Sid and Tiny - weighed around 110 lbs (50 kg) and were used for breeding and as guard dogs.
The court was told that immediately after the incident, Ms Bedford told a police officer that other members of the family were in the garden when Daniel disappeared before they heard the dogs attacking him.
She told the officer: "We went in straightaway but he'd already gone. They killed him out right."
But John Elvidge KC, for the prosecution, said Daniel was left unsupervised with the dogs for at least 15 minutes, and that Ms Bedford "failed to give the police any account for leaving Daniel unsupervised for so long".
He said Daniel's parents knew he had previously gone into the pen by himself and was well-aware he liked and was very attracted to the dogs.
Ms Bedford later told police that Daniel was only out of her sight for a "couple of minutes".
Mr Elvidge told the court the defendants "blatantly disregarded" warnings from a RSPCA inspector who had recently visited the farm.
He said the inspector was so concerned about the number of dangerous dogs and the potential danger to Daniel that he reported his concerns to police.
The trial heard Mr Twigg was not at the farm at the time of the attack.
His defence barrister Andrew Thomas KC said Mr Twigg was working 15 miles away and "had left Daniel in the care of his mum".
The court was read extracts from WhatsApp messages between Ms Bedford and a neighbour, Leanne Thornton. In one, Ms Thornton described Tiny as a "ticking time bomb".
Ms Bedford broke down in the dock as CCTV footage of the aftermath of the attack was shown to the jury.
The footage showed a neighbour, carrying a knife, running to the pen where Daniel lay fatally injured. He returned to his home minutes later, visibly shaken.
The trial continues.

‘Smell detectors' and AI cameras to be considered to monitor criminals

Cameras fitted in offenders' homes and 'smell detectors' to catch out drug use in and outside of prison could be introduced as new technology to monitor criminals and curb reoffending. Tech companies pitched devices to prisons and probation minister James Timpson on Tuesday, as ministers seek to overhaul the justice system. A smell detector likened to the human nose, which uses synthetic brain cells and artificial intelligence to detect drugs such as spice or fentanyl, was among the proposals to be used in prisons and probation offices. It could improve staff safety and also help detect if an offender in the community has breached licence conditions. Companies developing artificial intelligence home monitoring were among the seven finalists of 90 submissions selected for the process. AI cameras could be set up in homes of offenders in the community to check their behaviour on licence. It comes as Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood has said emerging technology has the potential to 'impose a digital prison outside of prison'. The Government has accepted recommendations from the independent sentencing review to tackle overcrowding behind bars, which will see fewer criminals jailed and more serving sentences in the community. Lord Timpson said: 'We inherited a justice system in crisis and in need of reform. Prisons and probation are working in analogue while tech drives forward a new digital age. 'That's why we have invited companies to present bold new ideas to help us deliver tough punishment and enhanced surveillance. 'Embracing new technologies will help us to protect victims, reduce reoffending and cut crime as part of our plan for change.' Other pitched tech ideas included software to help staff consistently input information on offenders and transcription tools to cut administrative tasks. Successful proposals will be considered to be rolled out under pilot schemes. Decisions on the plans are expected over the coming months.

Wilkinsburg man accused of trying to lure 5 children into his home

Wilkinsburg man accused of trying to lure five children into his home Wilkinsburg man accused of trying to lure five children into his home Wilkinsburg man accused of trying to lure five children into his home A Wilkinsburg man is accused of taking stranger danger to another level, allegedly using authority and money to try to lure five children into a residence on Sunday afternoon. According to court documents, the children were riding their bikes on Center Street when Everantonio Cerrato-Orellana offered them money to come into his home, even dropping the money on the floor, telling them to come in and pick it up. "These kids are smart, they're not falling for any of that," said Hengo Raw. Raw lives in the neighborhood and has children of his own. "We got kids that grow up in this neighborhood. They deserve to be safe, male or female," Raw said. The 40-year-old allegedly chased after the children while they rode off, then told them he was a police officer and ordered them to stop. They didn't, rushing home and telling their mother on Foliage Street. She called the police. "I know the kids, they're friendly and nice, but their mother raised them with a lot of sense, you know, so they know right from wrong," said Pearlina Story. Story has lived on this street for two decades. Story has children and grandchildren. She said she had seen Cerrato-Orellana around and was always concerned. "I have seen this guy walk around with a robe and nothing on underneath, I've seen him in shorts, and this is wintertime." However, in the criminal complaint, the 40-year-old alleges that he only came to this country two days ago. Cerrato-Orellana is in the Allegheny County Jail. "I'm glad he's in jail and they reported him," expressed Story. "You need to get down to the bottom of it, because if it's one, there's many more," Raw added.
