Maoists won't sleep peacefully this monsoon, says Amit Shah in Chhattisgarh
On the first day of a two-day visit to Chhattisgarh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday reiterated the goal he has set of eradicating Left-wing extremism by March 2026, and said that while the rainy season has historically provided some rest for the Maoists, that would not be the case this time.
In Raipur, he chaired a meeting on anti-Maoist operations Sunday, which was attended by top police officers from Maoist-affected states like Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Odisha.
'I want to say this to the people of Chhattisgarh before I go… Every year during the rainy season, Naxals used to get some rest. But this time, we will not allow them to sleep even during the rains, and will move forward to achieve our March 2026 goal.'
He also made an appeal to those who have joined the Maoists. 'I again appeal to all youngsters who got misled and joined the Naxal movement to surrender under the attractive surrender policy. Drop the weapons and join the path of Chhattisgarh's development. You will never get a better opportunity than this to surrender. There is no need for discussion. Have faith in the government, drop the weapons and join the mainstream. Many people have dropped their weapons, and I welcome them and assure you that we will not only keep our promise, but we will try to provide even more support,' he said.
Shah said the greatest achievement of Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai's government in the past one and a half years is that they accelerated the anti-Maoist campaign and moved forward in the direction of freeing the state from LWE.
Shah also laid the foundation stone for the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) and Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) campus in Raipur, and virtually inaugurated the temporary campus of NFSU, Raipur.
Talking about the modernisation of the criminal justice system with these initiatives, Shah said, 'These three initiatives will, in the coming days, serve as a foundation not only for Chhattisgarh but for the entire criminal justice system of central India.'

Nilambur byelection: Day of reckoning for UDF and LDF
Kozhikode: Counting of votes for the high-stakes Nilambur assembly bypoll will take place on Monday. The bypoll saw a keenly-contested race between UDF and LDF, with former Left-backed MLA and independent candidate PV Anvar adding complexity to the race. A UDF win would signal public discontent with the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF govt, while an LDF victory would strengthen the ruling front's push for a third term in power. The entire counting process will be monitored using CCTV surveillance. A three-tier security system—comprising central forces, state police and local police—will deploy 900 personnel on duty. Election Commission observers and the returning officer will oversee the process. Following EC guidelines, arrangements have been made for candidates and their agents to monitor counting. EVM counting will start with UDF-ruled Vazhikkadavu panchayat, followed by Moothedam panchayat. If there is no clear lead in these initial rounds, it will likely indicate the tone for the final result. Otherwise, suspense will build as later booths—including Amarambalam, where the LDF expects a strong lead—are counted at the end. After Vazhikkadavu and Moothedam, counting will proceed with other panchayats like Edakkara, Pothukallu, Chungathara, Nilambur, Karulayi and Amarambalam. UDF expects its candidate Aryadan Shoukath to win by over 10,000 votes, while CPM's internal booth-level data estimates a narrow victory of 1,600 votes for its candidate M Swaraj. Central Zonal Council meet: Shah to arrive in Kashi today
1 2 Varanasi: Union home minister Amit Shah will arrive here on Monday evening to chair the 25th Central Zonal Council, which will be attended by chief ministers of four BJP-ruled states, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Shah's anti-English position harms India
Union Home Minister Amit Shah's denunciation of the English language is ill-conceived and uninformed, and will only work against the country's unity and development. Speaking at the launch of a book by a former civil servant in Delhi on Thursday, Shah said, ''The time is not far away for people speaking in English in the country to feel ashamed'. The prejudice against English is part of the ideology and politics of his party, and Shah has only given expression to it. He is right in saying that the languages of our country are the jewels of our culture, but wrong in dismissing the role of English as a linking and unifying language. He is also right in saying that we should take pride in our languages, but pride in one's own language need not translate into shame about another language. Languages are not zero sum games, and the knowledge of another language does not mean degradation or devaluation of the mother tongue. Languages gain by interaction. It is the official language in many states. India is also said to have the second largest English-speaking population in the world. It is difficult to imagine English losing its status in the near future, going by the people's attitude towards it. The usefulness and popularity of a language don't always depend on government policies. People's relationship with language is a sensitive matter and governments should handle it with care and caution. .Shah's tirade against English should also be seen in context of the efforts of the central government and the BJP to promote Hindi aggressively. This has resulted in apprehensions about domination of Hindi in non-Hindi states. English was the language of power in India during colonial times but after the British left, it serves as a link language, with an equal relationship with all languages of the country. The replacement of English would lead to its place being taken up by Hindi, which comes with political baggage. English is also India's window to the world in every respect, and closing that window would hurt and set the country back. Shah says India cannot be imagined with a foreign language. But the idea of India is not static--it has room for English, which is no longer considered a foreign language.
