Congress opposed Mandal, backed faith-based quota: NDA meet resolution on caste census

Indian Express25-05-2025

With the government announcing that the next census would also include caste enumeration, a resolution passed at the meeting of NDA Chief Ministers and deputy Chief Ministers Sunday condemned the Opposition's 'cheap politics' and targeted the Congress over the issue, while highlighting the efforts to empower deprived sections over the past 11 years.
Trying to claim the social justice plank, the resolution stated that 'the Prime Minister's name will be etched in golden letters for fulfilling the vision of stalwarts like Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, Loknayak JP (Jayprakash Nayaran) and Karpoori Thakur'.
The resolutions underlined various achievements of PM Narendra Modi-led NDA government such as lifting 15 crore people out of poverty and efforts 'to boost the dignity of those previously denied the same in the name of caste discrimination'.
The resolution on caste census, moved by Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini and seconded by Andhra Pradesh Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, congratulated PM Modi for the move. Addressing the Chief Ministers, the PM said the caste census would do justice to the marginalised in every community.
Targeting the Opposition, the resolution stated, 'We are dismayed by the cheap politics of the Opposition on this issue. They had the opportunity to govern the nation for several decades yet they did not do anything on this issue.'
The resolution accused the Congress of 'defeating Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar twice (and) denying him a Bharat Ratna… delaying the implementation of the Mandal Commission (and) subsequently opposing it tooth and nail… opposing the OBC Commission (and) advocating faith-based reservations which are against the spirit of Dr Ambedkar's Constitution'.
During the last Census (in 2011), it added that the Congress 'had deliberately avoided a scientifically conducted enumeration of castes'.
'Later, whatever the exercise that was conducted beyond the Census of India Act was also flawed and wrapped in needless secrecy,' it said and slammed the Congress for using the issue only for 'political manipulation'.
In a post on X, PM Narendra Modi said, 'We had extensive deliberations about various issues. Various states showcased their best practices in diverse areas including water conservation, grievance redressal, strengthening administrative frameworks, education, women empowerment, sports and more. It was wonderful to hear these experiences.'

During the media briefing, BJP president J P Nadda said that the caste census issue has been on top of NDA's list of priorities from the beginning. '…Our government in Bihar, Nitish Kumar ji's government in Bihar, which was the first to bring the proposal for it, a resolution related to the caste census was also passed,' he said.
Days after the April 30 surprise announcement by the government to conduct the caste census with the decennial census, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had said in Bihar's Darbhanga that the decision came only because of pressure from a 'vast majority of the population'.
Gandhi had referred to the Telangana model as the 'correct manner' in which the caste census should be conducted, and alleged that despite laws providing for implementation of quotas in private institutions, neither the Modi government nor the Bihar government has done it.
Nadda also said the campaign against Maoists was discussed and Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai detailed the steps taken to ensure success. Given an opportunity to share the best model practices for the other states to follow, Sai presented the Bastar Model — the development and the innovative initiatives in the state for delivering good governance. During the presentation, he also outlined the success of the Bastar Olympics.
Chhattisgarh Home Minister Vijay Sharma, Nadda said, spoke about the rehabilitation of Maoist-affected areas and government schemes aimed at bringing them into mainstream. Then Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke about the strategy behind the campaign to eliminate Naxalism by 2026.
Nadda said that best practices related to the implementation of Har Ghar Surya Yojana in Gujarat under the leadership of CM Bhupendra Patel were discussed. Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma gave a presentation on 'CM Connect' programme, in line with PM Modi's vision of a 'responsive, responsible and accountable' governance.
This, Nadda said, was acknowledged as a model for other NDA CMs to be considered in their respective jurisdictions.
Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath presented a booklet on the success of Kumbh Mela. Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami gave a presentation on the implementation of the UCC in his state, Nadda said.

Revanth dubs BRS ‘Devils Rajya Samithi', seeks 10-yr mandate for $1 tn T'gana

1 2 Hyderabad: In a scathing attack on BRS, chief minister A Revanth Reddy Friday dubbed the pink party as 'Devils Rajya Samithi (DRS),' mocking MLC K Kavitha's recent remarks about 'devils' harming her party from within. "Don't call it BRS anymore. Call it DRS," Revanth told a crowd at Alair in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, where he laid foundation for over ₹1,050 crore worth of projects. "BRS leaders themselves admit KCR is surrounded by devils. Yet their leader is asleep in the farmhouse. Go to every village and tell people these devils have arrived when BRS leaders show up," the CM said, calling upon Congress cadres to brand their rivals as 'DRS' across Telangana . With an eye on long-term governance, Revanth urged people to give the Congress a 10-year mandate, promising to make Telangana a $1 trillion economy and transform Hyderabad into a city on a par with New York and Tokyo. "I have no personal ambitions left. Bringing down KCR was my goal. Now my only aim is to develop Telangana," he declared. Revanth slammed the BRS for targeting the Congress after the PC Ghose Commission summoned KCR in connection with the Kaleshwaram project probe. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? Why this arrogance?" he asked. He accused the former CM of playing politics with the deity Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy. "They denied people their right to stay atop the hill and fulfil their vows. Sins follow you like shadows. Maybe that's why KCR was hospitalised with fractures," he said. The CM laid foundation stones for projects, including the ₹574 crore Gandhamalla reservoir, ₹200 crore Young India Residential School, ₹183 crore medical college building, bridges, godowns, and roads across Alair constituency. He also vowed to develop the area under the Yadagirigutta Temple Board, much like the TTD in Andhra Pradesh. Revanth said the Congress would complete all pending irrigation projects in the region, and rejuvenate the Musi river despite resistance. "If Sabarmati and Ganga can be cleaned, why not Musi?" he asked, targeting both BRS and BJP for opposing the project. 'Employees are with Cong' Countering BRS criticism over employee issues, Revanth said, "Ask over five lakh govt employees—are you not getting your salaries on the first of every month now?" He added, "If not, don't vote for Congress. But if you are, give us another term. We treat you like family." On the caste census, he credited Telangana's 42% BC reservation plan for compelling PM Modi to promise a national-wide caste survey. India's ‘Chenab Trap' Chokes Pakistan's Terror Route; Even China On Edge – Here's How

New Delhi: In a moment that may go down as a masterstroke in India's strategic playbook, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6 unveiled the world's tallest railway bridge – the Chenab Bridge – along with a series of infrastructure marvels in Jammu & Kashmir. While hailed as engineering triumphs, these structures hide within them a fierce geopolitical message – India is silently fortifying its Himalayan frontier, and Pakistan and China are not happy. At 359 metres tall, taller than the Eiffel Tower, the steel-arched Chenab Bridge is part of the 272 km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway link (USBRL) and connects the Kashmir Valley to the Indian rail grid for the first time. But beyond the awe and applause, it is the military and counter-terror implications that have sent shockwaves across the border. Why Pakistan, China Should Be Worried The bridge sits near the treacherous Pir Panjal Range, a mountainous region that has for decades acted as a gateway for Pakistani infiltrators, including ISI-backed terrorists from the Lashkar-e-Toiba and the Jaish-e-Mohammed. From Poonch and Rajouri to the lush forests near Pahalgam, this route has seen some of the most notorious attacks in India's history. Now, with the Chenab and Anji bridges completed and the valley more accessible to India's armed forces year-round, this infiltration corridor is on the verge of collapse. 'This is not just a bridge. It's a steel-fisted message to our enemies,' said a top defence expert, requesting anonymity. The bridge does not only deter Pakistan. It tightens India's grip over the Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh axis, critical to countering Chinese aggression along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Troops, weapons and surveillance units can now move seamlessly – no more seasonal delays or logistical gaps. Hidden Checkmate This 'Chenab Chakravyuh' – as called by military strategists – is a geo-strategic snare apart from being about connectivity. With 24/7 surveillance cameras, anti-corrosion technologies and blast-resistant materials, the bridge is built to withstand earthquakes of 8.0 magnitude and even terrorist bombing attempts. 'They tried to divide us by using religion and terror. We are responding with steel, resolve and railways,' said a senior Indian Army official deployed in the region. Built with inputs from Indian Institute of Technology and the Defence Research, the Development Organisation (DRDO) and global experts, the Chenab Bridge uses high-tensile steel and advanced cable-crane systems. It is designed to last 120 years even under wind speeds of 260 kmph. And with two Vande Bharat trains flagged off from Katra to Srinagar, civilian integration of the region is now irreversible. What rattles Rawalpindi most is that this is blocking terrorists and rendering their long-game obsolete. For years, Pakistan has exploited difficult terrain and porous routes to fuel unrest in the valley. That door just slammed shut. Even Pakistan Field Marshal Asim Munir must now contend with the fact that Pir Panjal no longer favours infiltration, it favours India.
