The US immigration authorities have sought home addresses and biometric data from applicants in connection with H-1B and other employment-based immigrant visa cases. This is being done by issuing Requests for Evidence (RFEs).
For such petitions, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has not sought such information in the past cases.

What do H-1B visa holders need to know?
In the US, H-1B program holds an annual federal cap of around 65,000 new visas, with industries such as finance and technology being among top users of the program, as per the USCIS. Individuals, who have a master's degree or higher in the US, get counted among the additional 20,000 petitions that remain exempted from the limit.
Last year, big giants like Google and Meta as well as Elon Musk-owned Tesla hired thousands of workers with the help of this program, which has received support from US President Donald Trump as well.

However, this comes as the federal administration in the US has revoked hundreds of visas, which are mostly students.
Immigration attorneys express concern
This looks like an unprecedented move as the USCIS has not made such a request earlier. As a result, the latest development has raised significant concerns among the immigration attorneys.
This possibly adds on to 'Trump admin plans to identify and deport people here (in the US) lawfully," market research non-profit nfpResearch said.
Vic Goel of Goel & Anderson firm told Forbes that it was a "highly unusual" move from the authorities as "biometrics are not typically required for these case types."

What is a Request for Evidence?
This formal notice gets issued by USCIS when it seeks more clarification for evaluating a petition, according to Newsweek.
The report added that this is not a "denial", but remains a part of the process of making petitioners take care of inconsistencies in their respective applications. Official guidelines state that it should be mentioned clearly in the document what eligibility criteria has not been met and suggest what is required to meet the eligibility criteria.
What do RFEs say?
As per the Newsweek report, these RFEs are related to the agency's claim about possession of "adverse information" regarding some of the individuals.
A USCIS adjudicator wrote that they have "encountered potentially adverse information related to the beneficiary."
For the same, they have asked for an "updated address" to collect biometric data.
What can H-1B holders expect?
This comes amid a major crackdown by the Donald Trump administration to deport international students. Data from Inside Higher Education indicates that over 240 colleges and other educational institutions have reported that more than 1,550 international students as well as recent graduates got their legal status altered by the US State Department in recent times.

UP releases academic calendar 2025-26 for state universities and colleges
Lucknow: The UP govt on Monday released the academic calendar for 2025-26 for the state universities and their associated colleges. Accordingly, classes for newly enrolled students in the first semester will begin on July 26. For those in the third and fifth semesters, teaching will begin on July 21. Universities have been asked to finish admissions by July 24. An order by principal secretary, higher education, MP Agarwal said that universities must conduct a one-week induction programme as per UGC guidelines before and after classes from July 26-30. University examinations will be conducted twice a year, from Nov 11, 2025, to Dec 10, 2025 (Odd semester), and Apr 11, 2026, to May 10, 2026 (Even semester and annual exam). Universities are recommended to make a list of courses available on SWAYAM for minor papers and skill courses. Students can study these courses selected by their universities on SWAYAM for free and appear for examinations. 1 2 Vijayawada: Thousands of daily workers in Chimakurthy, a granite town in Prakasam district, are struggling to find work as small and medium-sized granite polishing units face the threat of closure due to the entry of big companies into the polishing segment. These small and medium units, numbering around 200, have been handling a substantial volume of business for the past three to four decades, procuring stocks from granite quarries and selling the polished granite to exporters. The polishing units have been responsible for cutting, polishing, and managing equipment and manpower costs, while quarry owners have made direct profits from exporters. This system allowed exporters to enjoy profit margins without investing in labor and machinery. The middle-segment polishing units have been creating massive employment opportunities for both locals and migrant workers, with approximately two lakh people working in various polishing and cutting units in and around Chimakurthy. This means that just 20 firms are processing a volume equivalent to that of 200 small companies. The big firms have the capacity to handle even more stock in the future due to their advanced machinery, which requires significantly less manpower. Each big unit is reportedly procuring over 150-200 containers of granite per month, equivalent to the entire stock procured by all the small units combined. The granite quarry owners are also supporting the big firms, reportedly making advance payments of Rs 2-4 crore per month. The small polishing unit owners are struggling to survive, and one owner, Raghunatha Reddy, stated that the entry of big firms with advanced machinery and their influence over quarry managements has crippled the industry. Chennai: The high-level committee headed by Justice D Murugesan to formulate a State Education Policy (SEP) for Tamil Nadu as a counter to Union govt's National Education Policy (NEP) has recommended banning of all coaching centres and tuition centres running parallel to schools and colleges by individuals and corporate companies in Tamil Nadu. "Schools and colleges may go redundant if proper action is not taken against such nefarious practices. These coaching centres do not come under the purview of any regulatory body of the govt. This is for immediate attention for the govt to act on by creating a regulatory body with appropriate powers," Justice Murugesan's committee said in its recommendations submitted to the state govt on July 1 last year. TOI accessed the report that the state govt is yet to make public. About two lakh students of Classes XI and XII take coaching for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for MBBS, Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for IITs, and Common Admission Test (CAT). Several schools offer integrated coaching for students for competitive exams from Class VI. " Other SEP recommendations include common age for school entry as five years, no common exams till Class X, continuation of three-year UG and two-year PG courses, introducing four-year degrees as only honours and research degrees, continuing with the two-language formula, changing the selection criteria of school teachers, introducing open book exams, and coming out with a mission for state higher education. SEP is against multiple entry and exits and suggests delaying the academic bank of credits. It also lays more importance on physical education.
