Flying Eagles aim for World Cup ticket in quarter-final showdown with Senegal
Nigeria U20 head coach Aliyu Zubair says his side is fully focused and mentally prepared for Monday's high-stakes quarter-final clash against Senegal at the TotalEnergies CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt 2025.
The Flying Eagles take on the defending champions in Ismailia, with the winner securing not just a place in the semi-finals but also qualification for the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile later this year.
In an exclusive interview with CAFOnline.com, Zubair emphasized that his team's primary objective is to secure their World Cup slot before entertaining thoughts of winning the continental title.
'We don't want to pursue two things at the same time,' Zubair said.
'First things first, and that is getting the ticket to the World Cup. That's where all our attention is. We are gathering momentum and I believe we are in a ready stage now.'
Despite Nigeria's unbeaten run in the group stage, their campaign has drawn criticism for inconsistency—especially following their 2-2 draw against an already eliminated Kenya side. Zubair, however, remains confident.
'People were underrating Kenya, thinking they are pushovers,' he said.
'But Kenya gave a good account of themselves. We are meeting Senegal now, and we will face the match accordingly. I believe nothing is stopping us, by God's grace.'
Senegal, winners in 2023, also had a mixed group phase—drawing with the Central African Republic, losing to Ghana, and only confirming their place in the last eight with a decisive 2-0 win over DR Congo.
Zubair acknowledges Senegal's status but insists Nigeria will not be intimidated.
'We respect all opponents, including Senegal as defending champions. But Nigeria has been in that position before. This time, we are coming to be the ones to stop them and run our race into the semi-finals.'
With seven U20 AFCON titles to their name, Nigeria remains the most successful team in the competition's history. A win on Monday would move them one step closer to an eighth crown and secure a return to the global stage.
'We are very confident,' Zubair declared. 'We want to get to the semi-final—just to win the match.'
Kick-off is at 12:00 GMT on Monday at Ismailia Stadium.

East Africa has shown it can compete with the rest of the continent
For years, East African national teams and clubs have struggled to make a mark on the continental stage. Only a handful of clubs have managed to reach the group stages of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League or the TotalEnergies Confederation Cup, while national teams have rarely made deep runs at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) or the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN). However, the ongoing Pamoja 2024 CHAN, jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, has demonstrated that East Africa is ready to compete at the highest level. This is the view of the CAF Technical Study Group (TSG), which has been closely monitoring performances at the tournament. Members of the TSG made the observations during a live show on leading Kenyan television station KBC on Wednesday. They made the appearance to share detailed analysis on the tournament so far, including tactical trends, player performance patterns, and emerging coaching strategies. As all three co-hosts have advanced to the quarterfinals, with Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda topping their respective groups – it is a historic feat for the region. 'The East African teams have shown that they have the belief, and this has pushed them to work harder and that is why we see the results,' said TSG member Oscar Mirambo. "This has proven to be a good platform for East African football, because many players are gaining their first international experience here, and they are proving to be doing that well. Moving on to the AFCON in 2027, I believe the countries have shown that they can make a big statement." South African legend Mark Fish, also part of the TSG, echoed the same sentiments, praising the performances of the co-hosts. 'The three hosting countries are all in the quarters and this is something special for them. It shows that there is something in their leagues and it is good for their football,' Fish observed. "It shows they are doing something right and the CHAN will now offer them a platform to boost this further. Pamoja is unique especially because we are seeing the incorporation of so many young players who were at the U17 and U20 AFCON." Another member of the TSG, Michael Amenga, who previously served as Kenya's Technical Director, noted that the competition has highlighted tactical and technical growth within East African football. 'We are seeing a huge development of players. We have seen players who are now more flexible to adapt to versatility and players who can compete well at the highest level technically,' Amenga explained. "CHAN gives us as East Africa a huge boost in terms of exposing our players to this kind of competitive level and it will be hugely important for us moving to AFCON 2027 where the stage is bigger." The TSG members have also been on a Kenyan tour, visiting various media houses to share insights on the technical aspects of CHAN 2024. Their mission is not only to analyze the competition but also to help raise the standards of the game across the continent. 'Our role basically is to help the teams and federations improve by dishing out technical advice and hoping that in this way we can improve the game in our continent,' Fish added. The success of the three co-hosts at Pamoja 2024 has already started changing the narrative. For East Africa, this CHAN has not just been about participation – it has been about proving that the region belongs among Africa's footballing elite.

Suarez fills Messi void as Inter Miami beat Tigres 2-1 - World
Luis Suarez scored a penalty in each half to give Inter Miami a 2-1 victory over Tigres UANL on Wednesday, stepping up to fill the void after Lionel Messi was ruled out of the Leagues Cup quarter-final clash. Messi, who has battled a "minor" muscle injury since a Leagues Cup group match on August 2, returned Saturday after a two-week absence, scoring a goal after coming on as a substitute in a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy. However, the 38-year-old World Cup winner was ruled out against Tigres as Inter advanced in the cross-border club competition for teams from Major League Soccer and Mexico's Liga-MX. "We rely on how Leo feels and it wasn't the best," Inter assistant coach Javier Morales said. "We preferred not to take risks, not to go backward in his recovery." In a duel that produced few scoring chances, veteran Uruguay striker Suarez was the difference as Inter kept alive their hopes of regaining the title they won in 2023, during Messi's first season in MLS. Things swung Miami's way in the 20th minute when Javier Aquino slid to intercept a cross and the ball hit his left arm in the area. The referee awarded the penalty and the 38-year-old Suarez converted. Tempers flared, with Suarez moving to calm things down after Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul and Uruguayan compatriot Fernando Gorriaran exchanged words. Inter coach Javier Mascherano was sent off at half time, receiving a red card for heated protestations to officials after injury time dragged on past what had been indicated. Mascherano watched from a front row of the stands when Tigres grabbed their equalizer in the 67th minute, Angel Correa slipping between two defenders and beating Miami keeper Oscar Ustari. Another handball by Aquino in the 87th minute, confirmed by VAR, gave Miami another penalty and Suarez converted again, this time going left as goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman dived in the opposite direction. "The game was really difficult because they played very well," Suarez said. "Every day I just try my best to help the team win." Miami booked a semi-final clash with Florida rivals Orlando City, who beat Liga MX champions Toluca FC 6-5 on penalties after the teams played to a scoreless draw in Carson, California. Orlando goalkeeper Pedro Gallese was the hero, saving two penalties in the shootout and scoring the decisive penalty himself. Orlando beat Miami 4-1 in an MLS clash this month in which Messi was missing. In the remaining two quarter-finals on Wednesday, Los Angeles Galaxy hosted Pachuca, while the Seattle Sounders take on Puebla at home. There's more at stake than the Leagues Cup trophy. Both finalists and the third-place match winner will qualify for the CONCACAF Champions Cup, with the Leagues Cup champion securing direct entry to the Champions Cup round of 16.
