New rules set by the Academy for Oscars 2026: Members must watch all nominated films before voting
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced a significant rule change for the 98th Oscars: members must now confirm they've watched all nominated films in a category to be eligible to vote in the final round. This rule, which mirrors a process already used by BAFTA, aims to encourage more informed and responsible voting across the board.
Viewing activity will be tracked through the Academy Screening Room, its exclusive members-only streaming platform. For films seen outside the platform—at festivals, screenings, or private events—members will need to submit a form detailing when and where they watched the film. This verification system, already used in select categories like international feature and animated short, will now be implemented across all voting categories. Additionally, final ballots will now include the names of all individual nominees, rather than just the film title.

A new category, Achievement in Casting, has also been introduced. The Casting Directors Branch will shortlist up to 10 films based on the creative input and collaboration demonstrated during casting. These films will then be presented in a 'Bake-Off' event featuring five-minute reels and Q&A sessions. Following the presentations, branch members who have viewed all 10 films will vote to determine the five nominees. Final voting will be open to all members, who will receive an edited version of the presentations.
In another expansion, the shortlist process will now include the Best Cinematography category, with 10 to 20 films selected for further consideration. This brings the total number of artisan categories using shortlists to 12, with only production design, costume design, and film editing still bypassing this phase.
The Academy has also issued its first formal guidance on the use of generative AI in filmmaking. The new rule states: 'With regard to Generative Artificial Intelligence and other digital tools used in the making of the film, the tools neither help nor harm the chances of achieving a nomination. The Academy and each branch will judge the achievement, taking into account the degree to which a human was at the heart of the creative authorship when choosing which movie to award.'
Key deadlines for the upcoming season include September 10 and November 13 for Best Picture eligibility, depending on a film's release window. The 98th Academy Awards will take place on March 15, 2026.

F1 first reactions: Brad Pitt's film hailed as high-octane crowd-pleaser; comparisons drawn to Top Gun Maverick
Brad Pitt's F1 got a mixed response at Comic-Con after dropping a high-octane 10-minute clip. But its first official press screening seems to have flipped the narrative; critics are calling it a full-throttle summer blockbuster with brilliant visuals and addictive energy. Except for a few concerns about whether the film can pull in non-racing fans, it is racking up rave reviews. Critics are praising Joseph Kosinski's film for its technical brilliance. Variety's Clayton Davis gave a shoutout to cinematographer Claudio Miranda and urged the Oscars to 'not do dirty with him again.' Miranda had also worked with Kosinski on Top Gun: Maverick and even earned a BAFTA nomination for it. Some critics are drawing comparisons between the visuals of F1 and Maverick. 'It's Pearce, down the insideeeee' — WOW! @F1Movie is an action-packed, thrilling look at the world of F1 racing, with lots of grit. The sound, score, and cinematography are flawless. Damson Idris and Brad Pitt are great! Absolutely Obsessedddddd,' wrote Jazz Tangcay. Tim Chan wrote, 'Just got out of #F1TheMovie screening: film was more emotional than I had anticipated, Brad Pitt is hotter than ever, soundtrack (with Tate! Roddy! Rosé!) is perfect accompaniment to the race scenes.' Maude Garrett, a journalist with Nerdist and Breakroom, called the movie 'so freaking good' and even wondered if she might've enjoyed it even more had she actually been an F1 fan. Also read: F1 trailer: Brad Pitt plays 'oldtimer' who needs to deal with both his past and a rookie to save his friend's struggling APXGP team In the film, Brad Pitt plays Sonny Hayes, a once-celebrated Formula 1 driver who stepped away from racing after a tragic accident. Years later, he's approached to mentor a young racer, played by Damson Idris, who's gearing up for the fictional Apex Grand Prix. The cast also includes Javier Bardem and Kerry Condon. Earlier, in his GQ interview, Pitt opened up about the pressure Formula 1 drivers face, comparing it to the kind of scrutiny movie stars deal with. 'Those guys are so scrutinised, and that sport is so revered, and there are so many of us that think we could do it too, just because we drive a car fast down the freeway or something. They get so much s**t. It is shocking to me. They've got to have thicker skin than even us.' The film is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and F1 legend Lewis Hamilton, who joined the project as a producer and has been promoting the film alongside Pitt. During a press conference earlier this year, Bruckheimer opened up about how the idea crossed his mind. Kosinski said he became a fan of the sport after watching Netflix's Drive to Survive during the pandemic. 'I loved how the first season of the show focused on the last-place teams, the underdogs, rather than Ferrari, Mercedes, Red Bull, the teams you usually see at the front of the pack,' he said. 'I thought there was an interesting story to be told about an underdog team,' he added. To shoot F1, the team actually followed the real F1 circuit for a year and even received permission to film during actual race weekends, within a tiny window of just 10–15 minutes. They set up over 20 cameras and had to capture everything in a rush before the track opened again. Kosinski added that the crowd is also real, and that they used advanced IMAX cameras, some of which were previously used in Tom Cruise's films. In West Bengal, a clash of poets over the skipping of a State-sponsored poetry festival
In a State celebrated for its rich literary heritage, poetry in West Bengal has become a site of contention, with poets voicing concern over the non-holding of the State-run Kabita Utsav this year. The annual festival, organised by the West Bengal Poetry Academy since 2016, has not been held in its usual window between January and March, prompting sharp criticism and allegations of mismanagement. A section of Bengali poets and literary figures has written an open letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that corruption and nepotism had derailed the festival's organisation. The letter, signed by several prominent names, stated, 'The West Bengal Poetry Academy — ours being the only State to have such a body — was established through your initiative. However, dissatisfaction has been growing for a long time among poets and reciters regarding the activities of the academy. [A report was recently published] stating that the poetry festival, organised by the academy, has been cancelled this year due to allegations of financial irregularities and other forms of corruption.' Also read: The college principal who serves as a bridge between Bengal's Dalit literature and the world The letter further noted that 'one member of its governing body said the last meeting of the academy was held as long back as in June or July 2024, which is not healthy for an active organisation. The West Bengal Poetry Academy is an important institution. We request a fair and independent investigation into the allegations made against the academy, and that appropriate action be taken against those found guilty.' Subodh Sarkar, noted poet and chairperson of the West Bengal Poetry Academy, rejected the charges as baseless and politically motivated. 'The year is not yet over and the festival can happen anytime. There has been no circular that the Kabita Utsav will not be held this year. The Little Magazine Mela was also delayed. The Poetry Academy, the first of its kind in the country, is a great creation by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. A group of poets who carry a particular political agenda against the ruling party — they have this ridiculous idea that corruption is behind the festival not being held. Such wild imagination is politically motivated,' Mr. Sarkar said. He further asserted, 'My committee members and I never look after financial matters. And the selection of participating poets, elocutionists and scholars is done unanimously and there is no possibility of any inclusion from outside the list. Academy's each and every decision is unanimous.' Angshuman Kar, poet and former Secretary of the Sahitya Akademi (Eastern Region), took a different view. 'What is shocking and disappointing for us is that this festival did not take place in the last financial year, that is before the end of March 2025,' Mr. Kar said. For him, the absence of the event within the financial year pointed to its effective discontinuation. Among the signatories to the letter is renowned scholar and writer Pabitra Sarkar, who observed that it was 'quite natural' for poets and elocutionists to be upset. 'As an interested onlooker I have noticed that many Bengali poets look forward to this yearly event as it offers them a 'State-sponsored' platform with a somewhat elite audience. Some remuneration was also there (₹2,000), which they do not get elsewhere. In a way, this was the most important annual exposure in the State for the Bengali poet.' Poet Sudip Chakraborty, recipient of the Krittibas and Sahitya Akademi Yuva awards, echoed these sentiments. 'An official invitation from the government means a form of recognition. In that sense, the discontinuation of this festival is indeed very unfortunate. The fact that a festival of poetry in Bengali, a language in which Rabindranath Tagore and Jibanananda Das wrote, has come to an end is deeply regrettable. There should be an enquiry into why it has been discontinued,' he said.
