New Global Report Reveals Consumers Have "Blind Spot" For Small Businesses

WALTHAM, Mass., April 30, 2025 /CNW/ -- Constant Contact, a digital marketing and automation platform that has helped millions of small businesses and nonprofits globally, today announced findings from its latest Small Business Now report, which uncovers a surprising contradiction in how consumers view small businesses. While most people feel personally and emotionally connected to the small businesses that shape their communities, the vast majority misjudge the scale of SMBs and their value to the economy.
"Small businesses are deeply embedded into our lives, yet it is easy to look past them and take them for granted," said Frank Vella, CEO at Constant Contact. "Many of us feel a personal connection to our favorite local businesses, but our research shows a significant awareness gap when it comes to the prevalence of SMBs. Failing to recognize the critical importance of small businesses in our communities and economies creates a blind spot, overlooking their impact on all of us. As we approach National Small Business Week in the United States, this is a reminder that small businesses deserve more than just our appreciation; they should be seen, supported, and celebrated."
Top Findings from Constant Contact's latest Small Business Now report:
Constant Contact combined insights from over 8,000 consumers across the United States, Australia and New Zealand (ANZ), Canada, and the United Kingdom, to explore the perceptions, behaviors and emotional drivers that shape how people engage with small businesses, and celebrate their contributions to our communities and economies. Top trends include:
Only 19 percent of Americans correctly identified how many small businesses operate in the U.S. (33 million), with similar awareness gaps in Canada (16 percent), the UK (20 percent), and ANZ (11 percent).
82 percent of consumers agree that small businesses positively impact their lives
83 percent would feel upset if their favorite businesses had to close, and 40 percent would be "devastated."
40 percent of global consumers say they visit their favorite small business at least once a week.
Across all regions, consumers say supporting small businesses makes them feel connected, helpful, and proud.
Globally, the most popular types of small businesses are food and beverage businesses like restaurants and bakeries, grocery stores, retail and specialty stores, locally-owned franchises and personal care or wellness businesses.
The top reasons for supporting small businesses are quality of products and services, personalized customer support, and local impact.
These findings provide new insight into how consumers perceive and engage with small businesses and highlight why it is important to see, visit, and support the businesses that power our local economies.

Constant Contact 's Small Business Now report analyzes insights from over 8,000 consumers aged 18+ in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States, and results were aggregated to determine global trends. All stats are representative of their associated demographics. The survey was conducted by Ascend2 Research in March 2025.

The Call for Applications will be announced in August, 2025 BANFF, AB and TORONTO, June 8, 2025 /CNW/ -- The Banff World Media Festival (BANFF) is pleased to announce that Paramount+ in Canada has renewed the BANFF SPARK Accelerator for Women in the Business of Media: Producers Edition for a second year. The program renewal was announced today during the opening ceremonies of the 46th edition of the Banff World Media Festival, taking place at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel from June 8-11, 2025. This national program is open to Canadian women, (including non-binary individuals), from across the country and is aimed at working toward gender parity in the media industry by supporting growth, investment, scaling, and sustainability of women-owned media companies. Twenty-five (25) women who own their own production outfits will participate in: a series of customized, virtual sessions covering high-level aspects of business strategy and planning, finance, and marketing best practices; one-on-one 'concierged' meetings with individuals, and curated sessions during the Banff World Media Festival. They will also benefit from a significant marketing and promotional campaign to help build their business profile in the industry. Participants receive a Banff World Media Festival pass, and a travel stipend to offset costs of attending the Festival. This first-of-its-kind program has already generated positive career growth for more than 225 women participants by helping them form strategic partnerships, and hone their business skills. The Republican House leader and staunch Trump ally said Musk's criticism of the GOP's massive tax and budget policy bill will not derail the measure, and he downplayed Musk's influence over the GOP-controlled Congress. 'I didn't go out to craft a piece of legislation to please the richest man in the world,' Johnson said on ABC's 'This Week.' 'What we're trying to do is help hardworking Americans who are trying to provide for their families and make ends meet,' Johnson insisted. His criticism sparked an angry social media back-and-forth with Trump, who told reporters over the weekend that he has no desire to repair his relationship with Musk. The speaker was dismissive of Musk's threats to finance opponents — even Democrats — of Republican members who back Trump's bill. 'We've got almost no calls to the offices, any Republican member of Congress,' Johnson said. 'And I think that indicates that people are taking a wait and see attitude. They're better for everything that he's involved in with his innovation and job creation and entrepreneurship.' RECOMMENDED VIDEO The speaker and other Republicans, including Trump's White House budget chief, continued their push back Sunday against forecasts that their tax and budget plans will add to annual deficits and thus balloon a national debt already climbing toward $40 trillion. Johnson insisted that Musk has bad information, and the speaker disputed the forecasts of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office that scores budget legislation. The bill would extend the 2017 Trump tax cuts, cut spending and reduce some other levies but also leave some 10.9 million more people without health insurance and spike deficits by $2.4 trillion over the decade, according to the CBO's analysis. The speaker countered with arguments Republicans have made for decades: That lower taxes and spending cuts would spur economic growth that ensure deficits fall. Annual deficits and the overall debt actually climbed during the administrations of Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, and during Trump's first presidency, even after sweeping tax cuts. Russell Vought, who leads the White House Office of Budget and Management, said on Fox News Sunday that CBO analysts base their models of 'artificial baselines.' Because the 2017 tax law set the lower rates to expire, CBO's cost estimates, Vought argued, presuming a return to the higher rates before that law went into effect. Vought acknowledged CBO's charge from Congress is to analyze legislation and current law as it is written. But he said the office could issue additional analyses, implying it would be friendlier to GOP goals. Asked whether the White House would ask for alternative estimates, Vought again put the burden on CBO, repeating that congressional rules allow the office to publish more analysis.
