NDMC to create activity-based learning hubs for school students

Time of India30-05-2025
New Delhi: New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with four city schools — Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, Modern School, Guru Harkrishan Public School and St Thomas' Girls Senior Secondary School — to create activity-based learning hubs and organise exchange programmes for school students.
Under the MoUs, Sardar Patel Vidyalaya will focus on improving the learning skills of NDMC school students in subjects like environmental education, art education and mathematics (for the primary section). Modern School will initiate teachers' training to improve skills in play-way pedagogy, English and leadership training. It will also provide assistance in sports or cultural activities for children with special needs.
The MoUs with St Thomas' Girls Senior Secondary School will focus on project-based learning and promoting inclusive education, while Guru Harkrishan Public School will assist the teachers in implementing programmes in music, sports, Punjabi language and cultural activities.
According to an official, "These will be exchange programmes wherein students or teachers from our schools will visit other schools, and vice-versa.
Besides sharing of knowledge, these schools will share expertise in key areas with our children. The MoU will last for a year, and during this tenure, fortnightly and monthly activity-based exchange programmes will be organised."
NDMC officials said that they are making an activity calendar that will come into force soon after the summer vacations are over.
"We expect these learning hubs to elevate educational standards through collaborative learning and exchange programmes on versatile facets of education," said the official.
NDMC chairman Keshav Chandra said by integrating the strengths of these institutions, the council aims to create a holistic ecosystem that empowers students and educators.

India ready to share AI models with Global South: S Krishnan

The Indian government is open to sharing its AI models with the Global South after achieving reasonable capacity and scale, a senior government official said on Friday. While speaking at FICCI's conference Bhashantara 2025, Electronics and IT Secretary S Krishnan said that the development of technology for languages to help people communicate in a frictionless manner can lead to huge value addition to the economy. He said that the UN Under-Secretary-General, during a visit to India, had appreciated India's AI-related works. 'We had a discussion and then he said your model appears interesting. At a stage when you have adequate capacity both in terms of compute and in terms of the kind of models that you have, will you be willing to share this with the Global South? This is something that we have declared that we are open to doing and something that we will do,' Krishnan said. The Global South term refers to developing and less-developed countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America regions. The government has launched the Bhashini project for the development of AI-based language translation technology. Krishnan said most people in the country would prefer to communicate through voice as opposed to in writing. 'I think voice-based communication has a critical role to play and that is where India can truly lead. The minute you say it is voice, then it means that you have to pick it up in the language that they are most comfortable with and what they would like to speak in. This is clearly the challenge that there are a number of researchers, a number of innovators and others who are addressing nationwide,' he said. 'With more than 6 billion people globally not speaking English as their primary language and India home to 19,500 languages and dialects, data emphasised the vast commercial opportunities that lay ahead,' he said. Data said that website names in local scripts will ease communication for the vernacular masses.

Delhi: NDMC mulls revamp of 250 kiosks into smart outlets

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has decided to revamp and modernise all existing kiosks in its jurisdiction, the civic agency's Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal said on Sunday. He said the initiative is a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mission Viksit Bharat @2047 and Viksit Delhi. Chahal said that most of the kiosks in the NDMC area are over 50 years old, and their redevelopment is essential to bring uniformity, symmetry, and enhanced aesthetic appeal to the urban landscape of New Delhi. "In the first phase, NDMC will redevelop 50 kiosks, and in subsequent phases, around 200-250 kiosks will be redesigned into aesthetically appealing, smart city – compatible structures," he added. Chahal said that the Architecture Department of NDMC is currently preparing the modern design for these kiosks. "Once the design is finalised, we will initiate the procedures for execution," he said. Emphasising the broader vision, Chahal said, 'The Government of India's Viksit Bharat @2047 roadmap, envisioned by the Prime Minister, inspires us to reimagine and upgrade all public spaces — be it kiosks, footpaths, roads, parks, or gardens.' The NDMC's initiative is not just about beautification but also about creating a modern, standardised, and citizen-friendly urban environment that reflects the capital city's identity, he said. Earlier, the civic agency's architecture department shared its plans to redevelop its properties in commercial areas like Khan Market, Super Bazar and Yashwant Place under public-private partnership (PPP) model. The NDMC is looking to appoint a consultant to explore the possibilities of optimising revenue generation from these key commercial areas. The multi-storey Super Bazar building in the outer circle of Connaught Place is of particular interest to the NDMC as it recently regained its possession after a protracted legal battle. The building was used for operating a co-operative store from 1966 to 2002. Over the decades, several proposals for using the vacant six-storey building have been discussed in government circles. Some proposals talked but converting the property into a multi-storey night bazaar or using it as a permanent location for street vendors operating across the NDMC area.
