Kolkata: The
Election Commission
has given the nod to FIRs against two electoral registration officers (EROs) in Bengal for anomalies in the voters' list, a senior poll panel official said on Sunday. The two officers shared their passwords with data entry operators, which allowed the latter to feed 102 bogus voters' data into the EC portal.
TOI reported that the EROs of Nandakumar in East Midnapore and Rajarhat-Gopalpur in North 24 Parganas were questioned by EC and were under scrutiny for failing to give a satisfactory reply to the commission.
The office of the chief electoral officer sent a report to the EC, indicating that names of non-existent voters were entered directly by data entry operators by using the passwords of the two EROs. The two EROs have admitted to sharing the passwords, the report said.

In this case, it was found that even booth level officers (BLOs) were not sent to verify the names. The lack of physical verification allowed the electoral rolls to be inflated with bogus voters, sources said. The district electoral officers were then asked to probe the malpractices.
In the case of Nandakumar, 59 people, and for Rajarhat 43 such voters — whose information needed to be verified — were entered in the electoral rolls.

The data entry operators misused the passwords and made entries without valid identity proof.
EC officials are also contemplating FIRs against the data operators and the agencies that hired them. The two EROs may also face disciplinary action under section 32 of the Representation of the People Act for breach of official duty in connection with preparation of electoral rolls.
The state CEO has also sought clarifications from two assistant returning officers (AROs) of Moyna (East Midnapore) and Baruipur (South 24 Parganas).
An official said ahead of the special intensive revision (SIR), the commission wants stern action against any electoral malpractice. Last week, the poll body published the 2002 SIR of electoral rolls in Bengal, tabling voter data of 11 districts covering 109 assembly segments.
The 23-year-old data was published under the heading "Electoral Roll of SIR 2002, (remaining ACs will be uploaded soon)". The list was not updated till Sunday evening. The last SIR saw 25 lakh voters being purged from Bengal's voter rolls.

What Harvard's $500 million rejection means for the future of higher education in the US

Harvard's $500 million settlement rejection could make a huge change in the American education system. In a dramatic standoff with the Trump administration, Harvard University has rejected a $500 million federal settlement offer, choosing legal resistance over compliance. The move is more than a high-profile rebuke; it's a watershed moment for the future of higher education in the United States, with ripple effects likely to touch every major university, student, and research institution across the country. A clash over more than funding The proposed deal wasn't just financial support. It came with strings attached: compliance with political directives involving diversity initiatives, admissions policies, and increased federal oversight. Many institutions, facing immense pressure, accepted similar deals. But Harvard took a different path, insisting that academic freedom and institutional autonomy are not up for negotiation. By turning down the $500 million offer, Harvard is betting on the courts and public opinion to defend its values. The university has already secured preliminary injunctions allowing limited research funding to resume, but the long-term outcome remains uncertain. Why Harvard's stand matters Harvard's decision sets a precedent that could shape how other institutions respond to political pressure in the years to come. 1. Strengthening legal resistance Rather than settling, Harvard has chosen to fight. This legal path could establish protections for universities that resist government overreach tied to federal grants. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo If the courts uphold Harvard's stance, it could insulate campuses from future political interference. 2. Sending a message to peers Other top universities that accepted settlements are now under scrutiny. Harvard's high-profile defiance may embolden students, faculty, and trustees across the country to resist similar pressures and challenge deals they see as compromising academic integrity. 3. Reframing public debate Harvard has turned a behind-closed-doors negotiation into a public battle over the soul of higher education. The resulting media coverage, campus protests, and political commentary have reignited national conversations about who controls America's universities—and at what cost. The cost of defiance Choosing principle over funding has immediate consequences. Research projects remain stalled, hiring freezes are in place, and international students face visa uncertainty. Some faculty have warned of long-term damage to academic competitiveness if the standoff continues. Moreover, universities nationwide are feeling the aftershocks. Fearing similar action, many are reviewing their diversity and admissions programs, even in the absence of direct federal threats. Broader implications for students and scholars Harvard's decision affects more than just elite academia. It could redefine how students, both domestic and international, experience US education. For international students, the case raises concerns about the stability of visa pathways and the political conditions tied to enrolment. For American students, it calls into question how much autonomy their institutions will have in shaping educational content, campus policies, and student life. A turning point for academic freedom At its core, Harvard's refusal to settle is a stand for the principle that universities should be governed by academic leaders and not shaped by political directives from Washington. Whether that principle holds will depend on the outcome of court battles and continued public scrutiny. But regardless of the legal result, this moment marks a turning point. It's a reminder that higher education is not just about degrees and research—it's about values, governance, and the future of democratic institutions. TOI Education is on WhatsApp now. Foul play? Sunjay Kapur's mother Rani asks UK police to probe 'mysterious' death; family feud escalates

Rani Kapur and Sunjay Kapur NEW DELHI: The mysterious death of Sunjay Kapur in London has triggered an international investigation and intensified a bitter family dispute involving the Kapur family and their flagship company, Sona Comstar. Rani Kapur, Sunjay's mother and former chairperson of Sona Comstar, has formally approached UK authorities seeking a thorough probe into the 'unexplained circumstances' surrounding her son's death. Sources from ANI confirmed that Rani Kapur lodged an official criminal complaint with British police, stressing the urgency for investigation. According to media reports, Rani Kapur claims to have 'credible and concerning evidence… that suggests his (Sunjay Kapur's) death may not have been accidental or natural, but may have involved foul play, including possibility of murder, abetment, conspiracy, fraud, and forgery.' Adding to the international spotlight, US authorities are reportedly monitoring the case closely, as Sunjay Kapur was a US national. In an emotional video interview with ANI, her first public statement since her son's demise, Rani Kapur expressed deep anguish and lingering questions. 'I still don't know what happened to my son,' she said, her voice trembling. 'I'm old now. I need closure before I go,' she was quoted as saying. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo Family fued Reflecting on the legacy of Sona Comstar, which she co-founded with her late husband, Rani Kapur spoke of the sacrifices and care involved in building the company. 'I remember the early days of Sona, built with care, sacrifice, and love,' she said, pushing back against the company's claims that she has had no involvement since 2019. 'I am here to remind the world that our family's legacy must not be lost. It must be passed on, as my husband always wanted it to be.' The dispute took a sharper turn when Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd, the listed arm of the group, issued a regulatory filing dismissing Rani Kapur's claims as 'baseless' and 'legally untenable.' The company reiterated that she has held no authority or position in the organization since 2019. Before going public, Rani Kapur reportedly sent a letter to the company's board alleging she was coerced into signing documents shortly after her son's death, an episode she described as 'highly suspicious.' She also claimed she was denied access to her bank accounts and left financially dependent on a few individuals. She asserted that no one was authorized to represent the Kapur family on the board. Despite her request to postpone the Annual General Meeting, the company proceeded as scheduled. Sona Comstar has since served her a legal notice demanding she cease spreading what it calls 'false and damaging information,' strongly refuting her allegations of coercion and mismanagement as 'malafide, false, unwarranted, and uncorroborated.' While Rani Kapur has decided to step back from public comments due to age and health concerns, she affirmed her legal team will handle all future proceedings, signaling that the high-stakes family and corporate battle is far from over.
