McIlroy got everything but the win out of Northern Ireland homecoming
McIlroy was supported wildly across the four days at Royal Portrush, which is just over 60 miles from where the world number two grew up.
"It's been an awesome week. I've got everything I wanted out of this week apart from a Claret Jug, and that's just because one person was just a little bit better than the rest of us," said McIlroy.
"I feel so thankful and just so lucky that I get to do this in front of this crowd. Hopefully I'll have one or two (British) Opens left here."
McIlroy's Masters victory in April saw him become just the sixth man to win the career Grand Slam.
It seems just a matter of time before Scheffler joins that list after he added the British Open to his two Masters and PGA Championship title from earlier this year.
The American's spate of success in the last two years has sparked comparisons with the dominance of 15-time major winner Tiger Woods during his heyday.
"None of us could hang with Scottie this week. He's an incredible player," added McIlroy.
"He's been dominant for the last couple years. He is the bar that we're all trying to get to.
"In a historical context, you could argue that there's only maybe two or three players in the history of the game that have been on a run, the one that Scottie's been on here for the last 24 to 36 months. Incredibly impressive.
"He's a very worthy winner. Also, he's a great person, and I think he's a wonderful ambassador for our game as well."

England face searching Ashes questions after India series thriller
Their next major red-ball assignment is a five-match Ashes series away to arch-rivals Australia -- where England have gone 15 Tests without a win -- starting in November. Below AFP Sport looks at some of the key issues that emerged from England's rollercoaster contest with India and what they mean for their quest to regain the Ashes 'Down Under'. Stokes central to England's hopes What England gain from having Ben Stokes in their side was never more evident than when their inspirational captain missed the fifth Test with a shoulder injury -- a fresh worry following his history of hamstring trouble. The 34-year-old all-rounder was the most threatening member of England's attack against India, taking 17 wickets at 25 in 140 overs -- the most he has bowled in a series. Stokes also looked back to his best with the bat, scoring 141 in England's mammoth total of 669 in the drawn fourth Test at Old Trafford. By contrast specialist opener Zak Crawley failed to reach three figures in nine innings. And at the Oval, the sight of vice-captain Ollie Pope running off to the dressing room to receive what appeared to be tactical guidance from Stokes did not say much for England's depth of leadership. England limited-overs captain Harry Brook, also a mainstay of the Test team and a lively skipper in the Stokes mould, could yet prove a better fit as vice-captain against Australia. Young captures long-awaited first PGA Tour win at Wyndham Championship
It was an emotional win for Young, whose seven career runner-up finishes included the 2022 British Open at St. Andrews. He started the day with a five-stroke lead and after an opening bogey reeled off five straight birdies -- a run that included a 26-foot bomb at the third hole. A pair of bogeys at 16 and 17 were immaterial and Young tapped in for a par at the 18th to cap a two-under par 68 that gave him a 22-under total of 258. "I've been waiting for it for awhile," Young said. "I never thought I'd really be that emotional about it, but it's the end of my fourth season and I've had my chances. Never quite like this -- and I wasn't going to let it get away from me today." The win at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, had a little extra resonance for Young, who played college golf at North Carolina's Wake Forest University. He was also hoping the win might catch the eye of US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley with the biennial match play showdown with Europe coming up in September. "Obviously that team is a goal of many of us," the world number 44 said. Fellow American Meissner had five birdies in his four-under 66 to take second on 16-under 264.
