Piastri fastest in sole Belgian GP practice
SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium - Formula One leader Oscar Piastri showed impressive speed in sole practice for the Belgian Grand Prix on Friday with Max Verstappen starting Red Bull's new era by denying champions McLaren the one-two.
Piastri was a hefty 0.404 quicker than four-times world champion Verstappen, whose team are racing without Christian Horner in charge for the first time since they entered the sport in 2005.
McLaren's Lando Norris was third on the timesheets, 0.504 off the pace and with work to do if he is to reduce Piastri's eight point lead.
With Belgium running to the sprint format, qualifying for Saturday's 100km race replaces the usual second Friday practice session.
Mercedes George Russell, who won last year before being stripped of victory for an underweight car, was fourth fastest with teammate Kimi Antonelli sixth and separating the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
Canadian Lance Stroll was eighth for Aston Martin with teammate Fernando Alonso ninth and Racing Bulls' Isack Hadjar completing the top 10 as his former boss Laurent Mekies started work as Horner's replacement.

It was reported that all construction work within the Marina Channel will need to be stopped during several upcoming international sporting events. Structural works along or adjacent to the waterfront promenade will be halted eight weeks before and during the annual Formula One race periods, at the request of the Singapore Tourism Board. I am amazed that the construction of an important public infrastructure project will have to be halted due to a sporting event like F1, which caters mainly to tourists, thus extending the completion date and possibly increasing the construction costs. Find out what's new on ST website and app. A s electric vehicles (EVs) gain popularity in Singapore, many HDB residents rely heavily on slow-charging stations at public carparks to charge their vehicles overnight. Yet the current slow-charging tariffs at these HDB charging points are excessively high and unjustifiable, especially when compared with the much lower electricity costs enjoyed by those in landed properties who can charge their vehicles at home. For example, slow charging at HDB carparks currently costs around 66 cents per kWh, more than double the prevailing home electricity rate of approximately 30 cents per kWh. This stark price disparity unfairly burdens EV owners living in HDB flats who often lack private parking and home charging options. Furthermore, slow charging at HDB carparks typically occurs at night during off-peak hours when electricity demand on the grid is minimal. This should naturally result in lower energy costs, yet EV users are still charged premium rates that cannot be justified by supply costs or grid demand. Such pricing policies are also counterproductive to Singapore's climate goals, as they discourage wider EV adoption . The high fees at HDB carparks must be urgently reviewed and adjusted to reflect actual costs and off-peak usage patterns. Making slow charging affordable and equitable for all residents – not just those with private chargers – will be a crucial step in ensuring that Singapore's green mobility ambitions are inclusive and effective. Financial details were not disclosed, but according to Spanish media reports, the transfer fee was around 25 million euros. "Luis Suarez is Sporting Clube de Portugal's latest signing. The 27-year-old striker joins us from UD Almeria, where he scored 31 goals and provided eight assists in the 2024-25 season," the club said in a statement. "I have reached the highest point of my career. I want to show that I have what it takes to be here," Suarez added. The 27-year-old began his career with Itagui Leones in Colombia's second division in 2015.
