What are endocrine disruptors?
Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that can interfere with the body's hormone systems. Hormones are like messengers that regulate everything from growth and metabolism to reproduction and mood. Endocrine disruptors can mimic or block these hormones when they enter the body. These disruptors can come from natural sources, like plants, or be synthetic and found in many everyday products.
Endocrine disruptors can be found in many of the products we use daily, making it difficult to avoid them completely. Over 1,000 endocrine disruptors have been identified, but here are some of the most common ones:
BPA (Bisphenol A): Often used in hard plastics like food containers, water bottles, and some older baby bottles and toys.
Phthalates and parabens: Found in plastic packaging, shampoos, lotions, and cosmetics.
Oxybenzone: Common in certain sunscreens.
Lavender and tea tree oils: Often found in skin care products.
Lead: Still present in older homes, vintage toys, and contaminated soil.
Soy-based products: Contain phytoestrogens, which are chemicals produced by plants that can mimic estrogen in the body.
Why it matters for babies and young kids
Endocrine disruptors interfere with the body's hormone systems by mimicking hormones like estrogen, blocking normal hormone activity, or altering hormone levels. Endocrine disruptors can affect how hormones are made, broken down, or stored, leading to imbalances. Additionally, they can change how sensitive the endocrine system is to various hormones, increasing or decreasing their effects. This is particularly concerning for pregnant women, infants, and young children who are more vulnerable to these hormonal disruptions during important stages of growth and development.
It's important to note that the research is ongoing; however, there is evidence that high exposure to endocrine disruptors can increase the risk of certain health issues. There is less evidence on what the actual safe levels are for people. As more research is available, the risks will become clearer.
During pregnancy, research suggests that endocrine disruptors can cross the placenta, leading to low birth weight, thyroid dysfunction, and neurological disorders. Repeated exposure to chemicals like BPA has been linked to early puberty, reproductive malformations, and infertility risks, as well as reproductive cancers. Endocrine disruptors are also associated with metabolic disorders, such as obesity and insulin resistance, and conditions like gynecomastia.
While these risks can seem alarming, it's important to acknowledge that most recommendations are aimed at reducing cumulative exposure rather than attempting to eliminate every source of endocrine disruptors.
Simple ways to reduce exposure
You don't need to eliminate every single source of endocrine disruptors. That's nearly impossible, and not the point. Instead, the goal is to reduce repeat exposure where it's easy and practical to do so.Avoid heating in plastic: Swap out plastic containers for glass or stainless steel, especially when heating food. If using plastic, make sure it's labeled 'BPA-free.'
Use BPA-free baby products: Choose infant bottles and toys labeled 'BPA-free,' or consider using glass bottles to reduce exposure.
Wash produce thoroughly: Pesticides can carry endocrine disruptors. Rinse fruits and vegetables well, or use a baking soda and water solution to minimize residues.Choose mineral sunscreens: Chemical sunscreens can contain oxybenzone, so consider mineral-based sunscreen made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
Check labels for 'Phthalate-Free' or 'Paraben-Free': Opt for personal care products that do not contain these chemicals.
Be cautious with essential oils: Avoid the sue of topical formulations of tea tree and lavender oils in children. These can contain chemicals with estrogenic/androgenic properties, and repeated use of these oils has been linked to breast growth in prepubertal girls and boys.Limit plastic toys: especially older or hand-me-down plastic toys, as they may contain higher levels of harmful chemicals.
Reduce lead exposure: If you live in an older home, test for lead paint and make sure that any peeling paint is addressed.
Choose flame-retardant-free items: if possible, avoid products treated with flame retardants, which can also act as endocrine disruptors.
Keeping a balanced perspective
Focus on reducing repeated exposure in key areas. Remember, the 'dose makes the poison.' Overexposure is when problems are likely to occur, not from occasional contact with things like receipts or plastic water bottles.
It's easy to get swept up in fear, especially with the constant stream of new research on potential health risks. But balance is key. Make mindful choices that fit your family's lifestyle and needs, and don't feel pressured to overhaul everything all at once.

Over the past decade, research and medical institutions have developed numerous apps that have helped patients living with serious health issues. From something as simple as logging sugar intake and mental health support to assisting with rehabilitation exercises and post-operative pain management, apps have emerged as a convenient solution for delivering medical help in recent years, especially in the pandemic era. The latest success story comes courtesy of the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and College of Medicine and the Yale School of Medicine. An app developed by the experts at the institutions, called OTX-2022, helped bring down the recurrence of suicide attempts by a healthy margin among folks who have recently left a medical facility following an attempt at ending their life. Recommended Videos The app provides a dozen educational sessions lasting 10-15 minutes each to at-risk individuals with a mean age of roughly 28 years. After weeks of testing the app among patients who have attempted ending their lives before, the researchers concluded that the 'adjusted rate of follow-up suicide attempts was 58.3% lower in the digital therapeutic group. 'This reduction is a critical achievement for a group that is particularly vulnerable to repeated suicidal behaviors,' the team behind the research said in a press statement. The findings of the remarkable suicide-focused cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) study have been published in the JAMA Network Open journal. Suicide rates in the US have been on the rise for over two decades, and it is among the leading causes of death for individuals as young as 10 years. Notably, over a million people get involved in nonfatal suicidal behavior each year, and nearly half of them end up getting hospitalized. How was the app tested? The overarching benefit of using the app was that it 'led to a sustained reduction in suicidal ideation.' The research tested the mobile app in a randomized clinical trial involving 339 participants in psychiatric hospitals who were admitted with elevated suicide risks in the US between 2022 and 2024. 'Although suicide-specific therapy is highly effective for reducing suicidal thoughts and urges, finding therapists who know how to do this life-saving therapy after leaving the hospital can be challenging. OTX-202 provides a possible solution to that problem,' Craig Bryan, first author of the study and a professor at Ohio State's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, said about the app. According to experts, the period after being discharged from a hospital following a suicide attempt is the most risky, requiring vigilant intervention and care. The OTX-2022 app aims to fill that gap by offering proper guidance and necessary help to at-risk people. After using the app, the participants were examined using the widely used CGI scale for assessing symptoms and improvements. The team discovered that the group of people who used the mobile app were 'significantly more likely to show clinical improvement.' And it seems the app has proved its efficacy in the test phase itself. 'One suicide death occurred during the study in the control condition. There were no suicide deaths in the digital therapeutic group,' says the research paper. Due to the lack of effective interventions and resources for at-risk people in general, experts say the mobile app can prove to be an 'extraordinary' solution.

They also discourage foods high in sugar and saturated fat, which can increase the risk of stroke and dementia. But there are lesser-known foods that can also create a real headache, according to neurologists. "While food-borne illness is often associated with gastrointestinal symptoms, some pathogens and toxins directly affect the nervous system, sometimes with severe or long-term consequences," said Dr. Mary Ann Picone, a neurologist at Holy Name Medical Center in New Jersey. Because the illnesses are less common and symptoms can be slow to appear, even doctors can underestimate or miss the neurological component, Picone told Fox News Digital. Experts say international travel and home food preparation can increase your risk of contracting them. Here are three common foods that neurologists caution could put you at risk of toxins and bugs. "If a can is bulging, cracked or severely dented, that's a red flag for botulinum contamination," Dr. Baibing Chen, a Michigan neurologist and epileptologist, said in recent videos posted on TikTok and Instagram, where he is known as Dr. Bing. Botulinum toxin is odorless and tasteless, and heating the contaminated food may not fully neutralize it, Chen warned. "When in doubt, throw it out," he said. The potent neurotoxin can cause botulism, a rare but serious illness that attacks the nerves, leading to muscle paralysis, breathing difficulty, and even death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Home-canned, low-acid foods including green beans, asparagus, corn, meats, garlic and fermented fish are the most risky, Picone said. To prevent botulism, the CDC recommends refrigerating or freezing leftovers promptly after cooking, throwing away damaged or bulging cans, and following the USDA's guide to home-canning. "I like eating fish, but I try to avoid eating large tropical reef fish like barracuda, grouper and Amberjack because of a neurotoxin called ciguatoxin," Chen said. Ciguatoxin is a neurotoxin produced by certain algae in coral reefs as a defense mechanism. It can travel up the food chain from herbivorous fish to carnivorous fish and eventually humans. The neurological symptoms of ciguatoxin poisoning can include feelings of tingling and numbness, reverse temperature sensations where hot objects feel cold and cold objects feel hot, and vivid nightmares, Chen said. Approximately 50,000 cases of ciguatera poisoning are reported worldwide annually, according to the CDC, but the numbers may be higher because it is often misdiagnosed. The toxin is heat-stable, he added, so cooking the fish won't destroy it. "This doesn't mean you can't eat fish," he said. "Just avoid or limit consumption of large predatory fish, avoid eating certain parts, like the liver or roe, and be aware of endemic areas." Ciguatera is common in the Pacific and Indian Oceans and the Caribbean Sea, according to the CDC. Chen said he does not eat under-cooked pork, especially from unregulated sources, because of the risk of neurocysticercosis. Neurocysticercosis occurs after a person swallows pork tapeworm eggs, according to the CDC. The larvae migrate to tissues like the brain and form cysts, which are diagnosed when found in the central nervous system. "A little-known fact is that it's actually one of the leading causes of acquired epilepsy worldwide," Chen said of the infection. "And it's not just in developing countries, but can also be seen in developed countries in areas with poor sanitation." There are about 1,000 new hospitalizations for neurocysticercosis in the U.S. each year, according to the CDC, and cases are most frequently reported in New York, California, Texas, Oregon and Illinois. It can be prevented by handwashing, cleaning and peeling fruits and vegetables, and only drinking bottled water or drinks or water boiled for at least one minute in countries where the supply may be unsafe.

Employees at the top US public health agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, were winding down their Friday when bullets smashed through their office windows, whizzing just over their cubicle walls. Across the street from the CDC campus, a gunman — possibly motivated by a hatred of vaccines — had opened fire on the agency's buildings, bringing panic to the upscale Atlanta neighborhood and the sprawling, open-access campus of Emory University that is adjacent to it. 'Active shooter on Emory Atlanta Campus at Emory Point CVS. RUN, HIDE, FIGHT. Avoid the area. Continue shelter in place. Police on scene,' said a statement from the university. One first responder, DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose, was killed. A married father of two, with another on the way, Rose would have made one year on the job next month. The shooting began just before 5 p.m. at the Emory Point CVS drugstore on Clifton Road, directly across from the main entrance to the CDC. Residents and students on their way home and parents picking up children from day care were caught in a tense lockdown that stretched into the night. Police sirens blared across the area as officers responded. The gunman was found dead on the second floor of the CVS store. He was struck by gunfire, but police could not say if it came from officers or the gunman himself. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Saturday identified Patrick Joseph White, 30, a resident of the Atlanta suburb Kennesaw, as the shooter. The investigation into what led to the shooting is ongoing. In the CDC offices, employees said the situation could have been much worse. Photos viewed by CNN taken from inside one CDC building depict bullet holes in windows and shattered glass on the floor. The images show that rounds of ammunition flew just above a line of office cubicles where employees sit. 'It's a miracle no one was killed here,' one CDC employee told CNN. Authorities have not confirmed a motive, but sources told CNN the shooter may have targeted the CDC over personal health concerns he blamed on the Covid-19 vaccine. Here's what we know. Why did the shooter allegedly target the CDC? After speaking with family members of the suspect, police are operating under the hypothesis he was either sick or believed that he was sick and blamed the illness on the Covid-19 vaccine, a law enforcement official told CNN. The CDC, one of the world's leading health agencies, is tasked with protecting the health of Americans. But it has come under fire during the second Trump administration as conspiracy theories continue to plague the vaccine credited with halting the spread of the global pandemic. The shooting occurred on the same week that US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. – a longtime critic of Covid vaccinations, with a history of spreading vaccine misinformation – announced the cancellation of a half-billion dollars in investments in mRNA projects. HHS said it would cancel federal funding for nearly two dozen mRNA vaccine projects. On social media, Kennedy reposted a statement from the CDC Director regarding the shooting but he has not independently commented on the incident. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said the alleged shooter 'is a known person that may have some interest in certain things that I can't reiterate right now with any confidence until the investigation is fully conducted.' CDC Director Susan Monarez said on X the shooter fired on at least four buildings. Monarez informed CDC staff via email that they will work remotely on Monday while a 'security assessment' is conducted. Employee assistance personnel were made available to workers, she said. The gunman was wearing what appeared to be a surgical mask and was armed with two handguns, a rifle, a shotgun and two backpacks filled with ammo, according to law enforcement sources. How the officer was shot The gunman was firing at the CDC complex when an officer pulled up. The shooter turned his aim from the CDC complex to the officer, a law enforcement source told CNN's Ryan Young. Rose, 33, was shot and later died at Emory University Hospital. Hayes Parsa, 17, saw Rose fighting for his life in hospital. Parsa was leaving the Emory University Hospital and waiting for a bus when he got the emergency alert on his phone saying, 'run, hide, fight.' 'I didn't know exactly what was happening,' he told CNN affiliate WSB. 'A cop car pulled into the ER slot, and I guess a cop had been shot.' 'It was horrible seeing him … they were doing CPR on him and they brought him inside.' Parsa ran back inside the hospital and witnessed staff doing chest compression on the officers, saying 'I prayed for him immediately.' 'He was committed to serving the community,' interim Police Chief Greg Padrick, said of Rose. 'At this time we're asking for the community's prayers for his family, his friends, his loved ones and the entire DeKalb County Police Department family.' FBI Director Kash Patel said Rose was a hero who 'made the ultimate sacrifice.' 'Pray for the family, friends, and colleagues of this hero who acted quickly to defend others and made the ultimate sacrifice,' Patel said in a post on X. Anxiety all over the Emory campus The chaos touched many people including Randy Gold, who was leaving an elevator at Emory Hospital and rolling to the exit with his father, just discharged on a wheelchair, when they encountered doctors, nurses and valet parkers running toward them and 'screaming there was an active shooter.' At that point, Gold told CNN, nobody knew where that was happening, but they all went into sheltering mode. 'We sort of ducked,' he said as he was sheltering along with five or six people in the hospital's radiology reading room. The only information they had at that moment was that the entire hospital was in lockdown, and what they learned while watching CNN as the incident developed. Around campus, people were also trying to get a sense of what was happening. Casey Cooksey, an employee of Emory University's IT Department, told CNN affiliate WXIA, he heard 'lots of gunfire' and described the scene as 'total fear for everybody.' 'We had no idea where it was coming from, but it was pretty close. We thought it may be in our building.' 'It was just a bunch of rapid fire. It was a minute before we heard any sirens. It was just a lot of loud shooting.' Roads near the Emory Point CVS, where the active shooter was located, were 'like a ghost town,' and police stopped vehicles from driving closer, Kristin Coles told CNN affiliate WSB. Anxious for her one-and-a-half-year-old son who was at a day care center across the CVS, she drove as far as she could before police stopped her and walked about a mile to get closer. Coles said her wife went to pick their son up, but they were separated in different classrooms due to the lockdown situation. 'I'm just trying to get to them as quickly as I can,' Coles said, stressing she has never experienced anything like this before. 'It just speaks to a lot of what needs to be done to keep our kids safe. This is ridiculous.' There were also 92 children in a day care on the CDC campus, and all of them were safe, said Atlanta Mayor Dickens. Threat to CDC employees The violent episode at the federal health agency has added an unsettling new chapter to what has been a turbulent period for the CDC and its staff. Dickens said CDC employees have 'had a tough go of it in the past year.' 'My heart goes out to you,' the mayor said. 'We are with you. We stand with you, and we're doing everything we can to make sure that we bring resolve to the situation.' He referenced the 'uncertainty' around CDC staff's employment following massive workforce cuts at federal health agencies. The agency has lost nearly a quarter of its staff since January. The Trump administration's proposed budget for the fiscal year 2026 would slash the agency's funding by more than half. Under the proposed reorganization, the CDC would lose additional programs. Some would be transferred to a new Administration for a Healthy America, while others - such as the National Center for Chronic Disease and Health Promotion - would be eliminated entirely.
