GRSE to beautify two ghats along Hooghly river under MoU with Kolkata Port
Kolkata, Aug 6 (PTI) State-owned warship builder Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) will beautify two ghats along the Hooghly river under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) on Wednesday.
The two are Suriname Ghat in south Kolkata's Garden Reach area and Mayer Ghat in the northern part of the city's Bagbazar localities, according to a statement.
The initiative is part of SMPK's drive to restore the city's iconic riverfront infrastructure and highlight its historical legacy.
Suriname Ghat holds major historical significance as the departure point for over 34,000 indentured labourers from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh who were shipped to Suriname between 1873 and 1916.
The first such vessel, 'Lalla Rookh', left from the ghat in 1873 with 410 passengers. These labourers played a crucial role in shaping Surinamese society despite facing difficult conditions, and the ghat remains a symbol of that migration era.
Mayer Ghat has spiritual importance, being associated with Ma Sarada, the consort of Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa. She is known to have used this ghat during her visits to 'Udbodhan', the residence and publication house of the Ramakrishna Mission. The site is closely tied to Kolkata's religious and cultural heritage. PTI BSM NN

'Mutual Verbal Consent Sufficient': Gujarat HC's Nod To Islamic Law On Dissolution Of Muslim Marriage
The Gujarat High Court ruled that Muslim marriages can be verbally dissolved if both parties consent, and there is no need for a written document under 'mubaraat' In a nod to Islamic law, the Gujarat High Court recently observed that a Muslim marriage can be dissolved through mutual verbal consent, or mubaraat. Mubaraat, or mutual consent divorce, is based on mutual verbal consent and does not need a written agreement as both spouses agree to separate. This is permissible under Islamic personal law and the ruling aligns with the principles of the Quran and Hadith cited by the court. In doing so, the court set aside a family court order that rejected the divorce plea based on the absence of a written agreement for mutual consent. A bench of Justices AY Kogje and NS Sanjay Gowda made the observation while overturning the family court order, which stated that a written agreement was necessary in mubaraat. 'The court does not find that recording of an agreement between the parties to the nikah in any written format is essential for recording the fact of dissolution of marriage. For the purpose of mubaraat, the expression of a mutual consent to dissolution of nikah is sufficient to dissolve the nikah in itself," the bench said, as per Bar and Bench. mubaraat nikah or a Muslim marriage does not mean that it is an essential requirement under Muslim personal law. ' Nikahnama only recognises the agreement entered into by the parties to the marriage by uttering the words qabool in presence of the witness that does not make a nikahnama or registration of a nikah part of an essential process of nikah. Similarly, there is no process by which the written agreement is an essential requirement for mubaraat," the court was quoted in its ruling. The HC was hearing a joint appeal filed by an estranged couple, whose divorce plea was dismissed by the family court in April. The two parties married in 2021, but had been living separately for more than a year due to irreconcilable differences. They mutually agreed to dissolve the marriage and opted for mubaraat. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. TNPSC Group 4 Result 2025 Expected Soon: Where And How To Download?
The exam attracted significant competition, with 11.48 lakh out of 13.89 lakh applicants appearing for the test, translating to approximately 287 candidates vying for each post. News18 The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) held the Group 4 examination on July 12 to fill 3,935 positions across various categories such as Village Administrative Officer, Junior Assistant, and Typist. The exam attracted significant competition, with 11.48 lakh out of 13.89 lakh applicants appearing for the test, translating to approximately 287 candidates vying for each post. With an overall success rate of less than 0.35%, only about 3.5 candidates were selected per 1,000. This year's Group 4 exam has been regarded as one of the most challenging in recent times, with candidates and invigilators noting that more than half of the 100 Tamil questions were unusually difficult and deviated from the standard syllabus. Step 1: Visit the official TNPSC website – Step 2: Click on the result link on the homepage. Step 3: Enter the required login credentials such as application number and date of birth. Step 4: The result will appear on the screen. The selection process for the TNPSC Group 4 exam is based solely on a single written examination consisting of 200 questions, with no penalty for incorrect answers. This format often results in luck playing a substantial role in determining outcomes. For example, one candidate may correctly answer 150-160 questions and guess the remaining ones, while another candidate might correctly answer only 50-60 questions and rely heavily on guesswork, sometimes by choosing the same option for all unfamiliar questions. While the difference between candidates scoring 50 and 170 is clear, distinguishing between those scoring 170 and 170.01 is nearly impossible. TNPSC Group IV Exam Pattern: The written exam will last for three hours and include 200 objective-type questions carrying a total of 300 marks. Part A (Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test): 100 questions Part C (Aptitude and Mental Ability): 25 questions While Part A will be in Tamil only, candidates can choose between English or Tamil for Parts B and C Notably, the TNPSC Group IV Exam is conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) to recruit candidates for various entry-level administrative posts in the Tamil Nadu state government. Gas Stove Explodes During Repair, Mechanic's 'Stormy Style' Goes Viral
The video, posted on Instagram by user @bittiae, has already crossed 27 lakh views where many praised the mechanic's "stormy style" and ability to remain cool under pressure An ordinary day at a small repair shop turned into a heart-stopping spectacle when a gas stove exploded mid-repair, sending flames shooting into the air. The incident, captured in a viral video, has left viewers both stunned by the mechanic's composure and alarmed at the potential danger. The now widely shared clip opens with a man working on a gas stove, his hands moving swiftly over its parts. Without warning, a loud burst is heard, and a fierce blaze erupts from the appliance. The sudden flare engulfs the front of the stove, creating a scene that looks more like a controlled movie stunt than a real-life accident. A young boy, standing nearby, can be seen recoiling in fright as the flames surge. Watch the viral video: He fixed it quickly but also frantically 😭 — Rhea (@bittiae) August 11, 2025 Experts note that gas stove explosions typically occur when leaked gas meets a spark or flame. Faulty connectors, poor maintenance, and unsafe repair practices are among the leading causes. In this case, quick thinking likely prevented further escalation. By promptly removing components and shutting off the gas flow, the mechanic ensured the fire was brought under control within moments. The video, posted on Instagram by user @bittiae, has already crossed 27 lakh views. Many praised the mechanic's 'stormy style" and ability to remain cool under pressure. Others, however, saw the incident as a stark reminder of the risks associated with gas stove repairs. One user commented, 'This video reminds us how important it is to be careful with gas stoves." Another advised against amateur repairs altogether, stressing the importance of calling certified technicians to avoid similar accidents. Some questioned whether such flare-ups are a normal occurrence for experienced mechanics or if this particular blast could have led to a far more serious outcome. 'We have seen many times that people and even policemen easily extinguish a gas cylinder fire and then tell others how they can do it," a viewer noted, but added that luck should not be mistaken for safety. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
