'He's about to turn this sport upside down': Pato O'Ward featured in latest Fox IndyCar ad
Earlier this offseason, Pato O'Ward, IndyCar's most popular driver, finally found himself on a billboard. And now he can say he's starred in a Super Bowl commercial about to be seen by more than 100 million people.
Saturday morning, Fox Sports released its 40-second ad on social media starring the 25-year-old Mexican racing phenom, the network's finale for its preseason promo campaign for IndyCar, as Fox execs attempt to drum up interest ahead of the March 2 season-opener. The ad is expected to run during Fox's broadcast of Sunday's Super Bowl -- potentially one of three such primetime, nationally-aired ads during a game that featured a record-breaking 123.4 million viewers last year.
$30 million in exposure: IndyCar expects to land 3 national Super Bowl ads
The ultra high-profile spotlight is new territory for the sport -- outside the Indy 500, that has drawn nearly 350,000 fans to IMS and averaged a TV audience of nearly 6 million in recent years. Since the lead-up to the 100th running of the 500 in 2016, IndyCar has purchased occasional regional ads targeting Indiana and the Midwest on Super Bowl Sunday.
But Fox's campaign, which began four weeks ago spotlighting back-to-back defending 500-winner Josef Newgarden and went on to feature two-time defending series champ Alex Palou, is an attempt to take the sport to new heights and turn its drivers into superstars.
Brash, bold and authentic: Inside Fox Sports' IndyCar driver promotional campaign
O'Ward's commercial features witty taglines throughout, calling him the "fastest 25-year-old on four wheels" and "can't-miss TV for everyone but his own mother" as clips pan to his rookie Indy 500 practice crash. After quickly detailing his seven-win IndyCar resume, the script flips to O'Ward's tantalizing charm, with the ad's narrator noting he "looks like a one-man boy band...charms like a British spy...and doesn't have fans; he's got groupies."
"So take a look at the next face of IndyCar, because whether you love him or love him, he's about to turn this whole sport upside down," the ad closes with.

'Not happy': Fans react amid sad news around Tony Squires and Candice Warner
Fans are expressing their sadness after it was revealed on Saturday that long-running sports program 'The Back Page' has been axed after 29 years. Tony Squires, who has hosted the show on Fox Sports for the last 12 years, confirmed the sad news but admitted he wasn't surprised. The sport talk-show has been running since 1997, but will wrap up for good after three more episodes. 'Ironically, I wrote a story in 2021 saying television shows don't usually last 25 years,' Squires told . 'They're like animals on the Savannah - very few of them die of old age. 'There's always something young and exciting with big nasty teeth, coming to get them. Well, The Back Page is now 29 years old, I've been hosting it for almost 13 years ... and we've been got. To be honest, it wasn't a shock.' The late, great Mike Gibson was the show's first host back in 1997, and held the role up until 2012. Peter FitzSimons, Billy Birmingham, Tracey Holmes and Jeff Wells were the panellists when it first began, and in recent times it regularly featured journalist Robert Craddock, ironwoman Candice Warner, NRL legend Greg Alexander and AFL great Brad Johnson. Warner, the wife of Aussie cricket great David, became a weekly panellist in 2022 and used the show as a launching pad for her burgeoning media career. Former AFL player-turned-radio host Ryan Fitzgerald was also a regular panellist, as were Socceroos legends Robbie Slater and Mark Bosnich. 'It's been a privilege to host a show once run by the legendary Mike Gibson,' said Squires, who's expected to stay on with Fox Sports in another role. 'But most of all it's been fun - like sitting at the pub with your mates pretending to know a shitload about sport. 'I'm going to miss it. Not because it was a job, but because it was my social life. I got to hang out with Kelli Underwood, Ryan Fitzgerald, Kerry O'Keeffe, Candice Warner, Brad Johnson, Ben Dixon and Robert Craddock - the most enthusiastic man on the planet. 'We've interviewed hundreds of sporting superstars over the years. From Rod Laver to Gout Gout – a 17-year-old kid who lit up the screen on his first live TV interview show just a few weeks ago.' Fox Sports boss Steve Crawley said the decision to cut 'The Back Page' is not a cost-cutting move, denying it has anything to do with Foxtel's new owners DAZN. 'At Fox Sports we have introduced a number of new shows in recent times and we have more in final planning,' he said. 'The Back Page has been entertaining audiences for nearly three decades; there are very few shows that can claim that. 'Entertainment programming is a tough business in that it's like life itself, how everything has a lifespan. Even the great shows like 'Hey Hey It's Saturday' and 'The Back Page'. In a big country with different codes of football and unique tastes, it's extremely rare for a sports show to survive, let alone for almost 30 years.' RELATED: Fresh blow for Panthers as four-time premiership winner retires Tennis world blasts 'classless' act after French Open women's final Crawley commended Squires and the team that made the show so successful. 'Host Tony Squires, panellists Crash (Craddock) and Fitzy, Candice Warner and Kelli Underwood and producer Matt Parslow have put in so much hard work,' he said. 'We'll celebrate Back Page over the final three weekly episodes.' Fans of the show took to social media on Saturday to express their sadness at hearing it's been axed. "Not happy at all about this decision," one person wrote. Another commented: "Great show. Looked forward to it every Tuesday. Can't believe it is ending." The Back Page Australia's longest-running television sports show is closing down after 29 years. Only 3 more episodes to go.I liked it best when Gibbo was host & Billy Birmingham, Peter 'Chippy' Frilingos, Mike Coleman & David Hookes used to chew the sporting fat. Crash ok too. — OBBY (@OBBY001) June 7, 2025

LIV Golf Virginia: Anirban Lahiri charges to lead after stellar 64 in Round 2
GAINESVILLE, Va. — Although the spotlight is typically on Crushers GC captain Bryson DeChambeau, and rightfully so, it was another Crushers GC player that charged to the top of the leaderboard on Super Saturday at LIV Golf Virginia. Anirban Lahiri, who has four runner-up finishes without a win on LIV Golf, shot a brilliant 7-under 64 to seize control of the individual leaderboard. The 37-year-old made seven birdies without a blemish on the scorecard. Lahiri made a 39-foot par putt on the 16th hole to salvage his momentum and converted another miraculous par on the 18th after having to get up-and-down from over 100 yards away in the rough. [MORE: How to watch LIV Golf Virginia 2025: Schedule, start time, TV channels, tee times] A trio of veterans, Graeme McDowell, Bubba Watson and Martin Kaymer, also announced their presence on the leaderboard heading into Sunday's final round. At 9-under par, they find themselves just two shots back of Lahiri. McDowell, who's never finished better than T5 in any LIV Golf event, shot a 5-under par with birdies on Nos. 15, 16 and 17 to catapult himself up the leaderboard. Watson, captain of RangeGoats GC, made birdies on 17 and 18 before finishing with pars on Nos. 1 and 2 to finish his round. Kaymer has played steady golf all week and kept himself in the mix with a 67 after sharing the first-round lead with DeChambeau. McDowell, 47, Watson, 48, and Kaymer, 40, will all have a fantastic opportunity to challenge for their first LIV Golf win. [MORE: 2025 LIV Golf Virginia odds, predictions: Favorites, picks from the field] Smash GC had an excellent day, tying the team lead (-20) with the Lahiri-led Crushers. All four Smash players shot under par with Talor Gooch and Jason Kokrak both shooting 67 to go along with McDowell's 66. Paul Casey played an inspired round for the Crushers, shooting a 5-under-66. LIV Golf's top three in the individual standings: Joaquin Niemann, DeChambeau and Jon Rahm all are within striking distance. The three are tied for fifth at 7 under and just four off the lead. Sovereignty, dominant among 3-year-olds, makes Triple Crown question an all-time 'what if'
Sovereignty, dominant among 3-year-olds, makes Triple Crown question an all-time 'what if' There's no doubt anymore about the best 3-year-old colt in horse racing. It's Sovereignty. And it's definitive. But is it fair to ask what might have been? Sovereignty, the Kentucky Derby winner who skipped the Preakness, was an authoritative winner of Saturday's Belmont, sweeping past favorite Journalism in the stretch to win, just like he did at Churchill Downs. That makes Sovereignty the rare horse who won the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes but was denied the chance to be horse racing's 14th Triple Crown winner because he never contested the Preakness. Don't blame the horse. And don't even blame trainer Bill Mott. If anything, praise him. It's possible the conservative management of Sovereignty, giving him five weeks between races rather than pushing him to run in the Preakness just two weeks after the Derby, might have been the reason he navigated the 1 ¼ miles in 2:00.69, just a shade off the track record at Saratoga. And it could be why Sovereignty remains fresh and poised for a campaign to target the Travers Stakes, the Breeders' Cup Classic and perhaps the Dubai World Cup next spring, where he could run in front of owners who rule that country. But at the same time, it feels like a bit of a missed opportunity. Sovereignty deserved a chance to be a Triple Crown winner because he's just that good of a racehorse, and he'll never have that opportunity again. It's going to forever remain an all-time horse racing 'what if?' 'If we wouldn't have won today, we would have taken a lot of criticism,' Mott said immediately after the race on Fox Sports. 'But it turned out good. A lot of times we make the wrong decision, but today it worked out well.' Of course, the other factor here is that the Belmont was run this year at 1 ¼ miles at Saratoga rather than Belmont Park's traditional 1 ½-mile configuration because the track is undergoing renovations. Even if Sovereignty had won all three Triple Crown races, it would have had an asterisk because of circumstances beyond his control. So maybe by choosing to skip the Preakness, Mott saved the entire sports world from a fruitless debate. But what's clear is that this crop of 3-year-olds is very good: Sovereignty, Journalism and Baeza were 1-2-3 in Louisville and 1-2-3 in New York, with Journalism taking advantage in the Preakness to get a classic victory on his résumé. That consistency is indicative of some very good racehorses that have the potential to continue their rivalry the rest of the year. But for now, there's no doubt about the best of them. Sovereignty reigns supreme.
