Ed Sheeran: I identify as culturally Irish despite being born in England

Telegraph4 days ago

Ed Sheeran has said he identifies culturally as Irish despite being born and raised in England.
The Galway Girl singer, 34, brought up in Suffolk, has a large Irish family and said he would spend holidays in the country as a child.
'I class my culture as Irish. I think that's what I grew up with,' he told The Louis Theroux Podcast.
Sheeran's father's parents are Irish. His grandmother Anne Mary, also known as Nancy Mulligan, from Gorey in County Wexford, married Bill Sheeran, from County Derry, in London in 1951.
One of Sheeran's hits was named after his grandmother and paid tribute to their relationship.
He told Theroux: 'My mum's family is very, very small, it's her and her parents, and my dad's family is... he's got seven brothers and sisters.
'We'd spend all of our holidays in Ireland. My first musical experiences were in Ireland, I grew up with trad music in the house. So I identify culturally as Irish, but I was obviously born and raised in Britain.'
'I don't think there's any rules to it'
Sheeran said 'just because I was born in Britain doesn't necessarily mean that I have to just be [British]'.
He added: 'I do feel like my culture is something that I'm really proud of and grew up with and want to express. There's loads of people I know that are half this or quarter this. I don't think there's any rules to it. It should be how you feel and how you were raised and what you lean into.'
Asked whether he gets 'a lot of love' in Ireland, he said: 'I'd say it's basically my second home musically. I'd say Ireland is the place that I am most successful musically.'
Sheeran previously told BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs that he has Irish family and spent most of his childhood summers, birthdays and Christmases in the country.
'A strange trade-off'
Sheeran married Cherry Seaborn in 2019, and the couple have two children. Reflecting on the drawbacks of fame, he said he was 'really sensitive' to people taking pictures of his children.
'My first daughter, six weeks after she was born, we hadn't sent any photos of her whatsoever, but there was paparazzi outside our house that got a photo of her. It was in the paper and I just found it weird that some strange old man that I'd never met was the only person with an image of my kid on their device.
'It's a strange trade-off, because obviously to be successful in the music industry you end up being rich, famous and successful, and those things are things that people go, 'well, that's the trade-off.'
'But my kids have not signed up to that, and I find it weird that it's normal to take pictures of other people's children if they're famous.'
The four-time Grammy-winning singer also revealed that he does not own a private jet and likes to travel by train, saying: 'I like the environment, I like trees. I'd find it hard to justify. No one's perfect. When we're doing intense promo trips, there will be the odd time,' he told Theroux.

Irish Oscar-winning actor 'tipped to be next James Bond villain' as speculation for next 007 cast heats up

A much-loved Irish actor has been 'tipped as next James Bond villain' in the hotly-anticipated next instalment. Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy, 49, is currently leading the pack of odds at 9/2. The actor is well-known for his role as Thomas Shelby in BBC 's Peaky Blinders. The Oppenheimer star, who previously said he was 'too old' to play the iconic spy, could be a contender for Bond's next adversary in the popular action-packed saga. Bookmaker expert Jake Ashton said: 'The villain role in Bond movies is just as iconic as Bond himself. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'With Cillian Murphy at the height of his powers and trusted by major directors, he's a natural favourite.' Also in the running for the part are American actor Paul Giamatti (11/2), The Boogeyman star David Dastmalchian (13/2), and unlikely contender Zendaya (7/1). Despite 'usually playing the good guy' in her previous roles, the female actress told Elle in 2023 that she's ready to enter her villainous era. 'I would love to play a villain of sorts,' the 28-year-old said. 'Tap into the evil, supervillain vibes. Whatever that manifests in, I don't think necessarily in a superhero sense, I just mean in like an emotional sense. 'I feel like I usually play the good guy, so I'd like to play the bad guy.' No Time To Die saw Rami Malek stars as its lead antagonist Lyutsifer Safin, a terrorist chief and scientist driven by a desire to dismantle the criminal group SPECTRE. Before him A-lister Christoph Waltz starred as the villain in Spectre and Javier Bardem played Raoul Silva in Skyfall, an antagonist described as 'up there with the great' Bond baddies. American actor David Dastmalchian, 49, is also in the running for the part after impressing in The Dark Knight (Pictured June 2025) Zendaya, 28, has too emerged as a shock contender after expressing her want to be a villain during an interview (Pictured May 2025) After Daniel Craig's James Bond died at the end of No Time To Die, speculation has been rife as to how the next film will begin. As The Daily Mail reported, the plan is for the new Bond to be a 'straight up' reboot. Film-lovers have been patiently waiting to find out when the new 007 movie will be released since Daniel Craig finished his five film stint as the British spy with No Time To Die. The 2021 movie was the last spearheaded by Bond producer of 30 years Barbara Broccoli and her brother Michael G. Wilson after Amazon took over 'creative control' of the much-loved franchise. British fan favourites Aaron-Taylor Johnson and Henry Cavill have been linked to the role, while The White Lotus actor Theo James emerged as the latest bookies' favourite last month. Now, betting companies have released their odds for the next villain - with one unexpected household name topping the list. There is reportedly set to be no explanation of how the special agent is still alive, no multiverse of Bonds and no attempt to go back to the 1960s for a vintage Bond. Barbara Broccoli's choice for Bond was thought to be Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who was once favourite for the role, but Heyman and Pascal are likely to want to choose their own 007. Theo James currently sits at favourite for the part at 3/1, ahead of Superman actor Cavill (3/1), Taylor-Johnson (7/2) and Jack Lowden (12/1) from Mary Queen of Scots. Amazon bosses are currently said to be considering locations in which to set the much-anticipated new film, which experts predicted is likely to be released at the end of next year or in 2027.

Huge Irish actor emerges as James Bond villain frontrunner as race to crown new 007 heats up

A HUGE Irish actor has today emerged as the frontrunner to play the next James Bond villain. Ever since Daniel Craig left the famous franchise the rumour mill has been whirring as to who will take on the iconic 007 gig - but now fans want to know who will play the next Bond baddie. 5 5 5 Now, an actor who was previously in the running to play James Bond, is being tipped to now play the iconic villain role. According to the bookies Peaky Blinders actor Cillian Murphy is the current favourite to be named as the next 007 baddie. He is leading the pack with odds of 9/2. The Irish actor - best known for playing Thomas Shelby - previously said he was "too old" to play the famous spy. But thanks to being at the peak of his career, the Oppenheimer star could be the next Bond villian. Bookmaker expert Jake Ashton said: 'The villain role in Bond movies is just as iconic as Bond himself. "With Cillian Murphy at the height of his powers and trusted by major directors, he's a natural favourite.' RACE FOR BOND Meanwhile, the race for James Bond is heating up. Stars including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Theo James, Henry Cavill, and Tom Hardy, have all been strongly tipped to replace Daniel Craig as the Secret Service agent. The Sun exclusively told how Aaron had been formally offered the role of the Brit spy last year. Brit acting legend admits he wants to play James Bond saying 'the world's gone crazy' if Amazon casts a US star for 007 This came after we first reported the Marvel movie star had emerged as a surprise frontrunner three years ago. The Sun previously revealed the handsome actor was in the running for the job after secretly screen testing for Bond movie supremo Barbara Broccoli at Pinewood Studios. A source previously told us: ' Bond is Aaron's job, should he wish to accept it. "The formal offer is on the table and they are waiting to hear back." When asked previously whether he would step into Bond's shoes, Aaron said: 'I find it charming and wonderful that people see me in that role. "I take it as a great compliment.' 5 5 BRIT BOND It's also been confirmed that Bond will still be a British man despite being sold to 'woke' Hollywood streaming site Amazon. Before giving up ownership of the popular film franchise, 007's stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson insisted the spy would retain his nationality and gender. Barbara, who took over the Bond brand from company Eon Productions alongside Mr Wilson in 1995, made the arrangement before she agreed to sell the rights to Amazon in a £770million deal. Insiders have hit back at fears the streaming giant - owned by Jeff Bezos - will turn Bond 'woke'. An insider told the Mail on Sunday: 'Amazon is committed to keeping the spirit of Bond alive and that means he has to be British or from the Commonwealth - and he has to be male.' Half-siblings Barbara and Michael took over the Bond franchise from their father and stepfather Albert "Cubby" Broccoli - who bought the film rights from Bond creator Ian Fleming in 1961. Since then there have been 25 movies - where Bond defeats villains bent on destruction, all while drinking martinis and seducing women. Timeline of James Bond actors Over the years there have been seven actors who have played 007. The first ever James Bond film was in 1962, and this is who has played the lead role over the years: Sean Connery - The late star was the first ever actor to play Bond, and reprised the role for seven movies. George Lazenby - The star only played Bond once, but was the youngest actor to ever play the spy. Roger Moore - The late movie star spent 12 years making seven films in the famous franchise. Timothy Dalton - The smooth actor took over from Roger Moore and appeared in The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill. Pierce Brosnan - The handsome star played Bond for four movies from 1995 to 2002. Daniel Craig - The British star was the first blonde James Bond and the sixth actor to win the role in 2005.
