The 'a-line bob' is the new lob! How to style the cut for every length and face shape

The 'a-line bob' is the new lob! How to style the cut for every length and face shape

Cosmopolitan7 days ago
The Bob Renaissance is fascinating (and it's one to rival that of the 15th century). One cut, many interpretations and a global reach, name me a more popular beauty movement, I'll wait. So far, we've decoded graduated bobs, French bobs, and even shaggy bobs, but now, it's time for the a-line bob to take centre stage. Move aside lobs because this cut is bridging the gap between longer and shorter bobs to – as Hannah Montana once said – get the best of both worlds...
As with the former bobs mentioned, the A-line name doesn't give much away on what defines the cut. So, to get to the nitty-gritty on what the style actually is, as well as who it's best suited to and how to manage the length, we tapped the brains of Mark Hayes, Senior International Creative Director at HOUSE OF SASSOON, who shared his expertise.
Snip snip!
Just like how an A-line skirt flares out from a narrow waist, Mark says that the A-line bob is cut shorter at the back and gradually becomes longer toward the front; "this creates a sleek, angled silhouette that gives the illusion of length around the face without the weight of a full-length style."
Mark adds, "The cut can be customised with or without layers, and with or without a fringe. The angle itself can be subtle or more dramatic, depending on the desired look."
Sound familiar? Well, the A-line bob has many similarities to a graduated bob, and Mark decodes the differences below.
"As mentioned, an A-line bob is characterised by a longer front and shorter back with a visibly angled perimeter, cut in a continuous diagonal line that runs from back to front," explains Mark. "It typically avoids heavy layering in the back and instead focuses on a clean, sharp line with a dramatic forward sweep.
"This look has less volume at the crown and relies primarily on the outline for structure, with minimal or no graduation at the back.'
According to Mark, the finish is sleek and polished, making it best suited for straight hair or hair with a slight bend, and for clients seeking a modern, structured silhouette without visible layers.
"In contrast," he says, "a graduated bob incorporates graduated layers in the back to create a rounded, voluminous shape. While the overall balance may resemble an A-line, it is not generally as sharply angled. The key characteristic is the distinct layered structure in the back, which contributes to its roundness and volume."
"This cut provides fullness and lift at the crown due to the internal layering," he adds, "resulting in a more curved and rounded silhouette than a true A-line. The texture can vary from soft and sleek to tousled, depending on the hair type. Graduated bobs are ideal for thicker hair or for clients who want to reduce bulk while adding movement, as well as for those who prefer a more voluminous look with a curved shape."
"The A-line bob flatters a variety of face shapes," says Mark. He breaks down the benefits for each below:
"In terms of hair types, the A-line bob works best on straight to wavy hair, which highlights the clean lines and structure of the cut," he continues, breaking down the need-to-knows below:
"For a sleek, straight look," Mark advises, "begin by blow-drying the hair with a half-round or round brush. Wrap the hair around the brush first, then gently curve the ends inward. You can follow this with a light pass of a straightener to further define the surface and the edges of the cut."
Of course, Mark recommends starting with a heat protectant spray to guard against damage, followed by a smoothing serum or cream to add shine and reduce frizz, and a shine spray to finish the look with a polished, glossy effect.
"To create a textured, tousled look, use a curling wand or straightener to form soft waves," Mark says. "Gently separate the curls with your fingers and mist them with a texture-enhancing spray. Recommended products for this style include a texturising spray to add volume and create an airy, undone feel; a sea salt spray to enhance natural waves and add grip for a beachy finish; and a styling paste or cream to define the ends and offer soft hold."
"For quick everyday styling," he suggests, "try parting the hair deeply to one side or tucking one side behind the ear for a chic yet simple effect. Adding a touch of dry shampoo at the roots can refresh the style and boost volume."

I Tried $802 of YSL Beauty Products & Here's What's Worth Buying

All linked products are independently selected by our editors. If you purchase any of these products, we may earn a commission. When you think of YSL Beauty, a few things come to mind. For me, I think of Touche Éclat concealer and Dua Lipa. For others, you may simply know the three iconic initials as an iconic French fashion house. All of these things are true, but during a recent trip with the brand to Marrakech (a home and huge source of inspiration to the brand's founder, Algerian-born Yves Saint Laurent), I discovered that there was so much to YSL Beauty that meets the eye. And not to mention, some seriously excellent products to boot. Over four days, I got the chance to visit Morocco's Ourika Gardens, where YSL Beauty grows botanical ingredients for its suite of makeup, skincare products, and fragrances. (I'll never forget hand-picking jasmine flowers that would end up in bottles of Libre perfume.) It's as good a crash course as I could've dreamed of, and along the way, I tested out hundreds of dollars' worth of product to determine which are the most exciting, covetable ones to try this year. Loveshine Plumping Lip Oil Gloss, $72 In a crowded landscape of lip gloss-treatment hybrids, YSL Beauty's Loveshine is a standout. The shades are curated and truly unique — my two favourites are California Sunshine, a shimmery cinnamon, and Thunder Stealer, a sparkly frosted lavender that feels like it's from the future. In addition to a kiss of colour, the formula has ginger and pepper oils to boost circulation and naturally plump lips. Make Me Blush Powder Blush, $98 These adorable powder blushes remind me of French macarons — colourful, cute, and utterly irresistible. Available in both matte and satin finishes, these silky powder blushes are intensely pigmented and have pretty impressive staying power. (They held up all day, even on the hottest days walking around Marrakech.) My favourites of the bunch are Peachy Nude and Berry Bang, but to be honest, there's not a blah shade in the bunch. Candy Glaze Lip Gloss Stick, $72 Lip gloss in a stick? Genius, if you ask me. It's easier to apply without a mirror, less prone to getting everywhere, and when the packaging is this good, what's not to love? I love to wear this with a lip pencil for an easy, effortless lip combo. You can also wear it alone for a barely-there hint of hydrating colour. Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara, $70 I'm pretty picky with my mascara. I like my lashes to look effortlessly fluttery and defined, even when I do a more bold, voluminous lash look. I'm wearing YSL Beauty's Lash Clash mascara here, and as you can see, it's all about flirty, look-at-me lashes without any heaviness or clumps. YSL Beauty's Global Makeup Artist Sam Visser gave me a life-changing tip for applying lots of mascara: Wipe off any excess from the wand before applying it to your lashes, which gives you more control over building up coats as needed. Couture Mini Clutch Eyeshadow Palette, $130 These compact eyeshadow quads are high fashion, but for your eyes. There are two new palettes to look forward to this year, Captivating Dunes and Sunrise Safari, and the former has become my current obsession. It's the perfect mix of earthy, cool-toned neutrals that are super elevated. I like to apply a wash of champagne shimmer all over my lid, and then define the crease with the medium taupe. For date night, I turn it into a smoky eye with the dark chocolate matte along the upper and lower lash lines. The powders are silky and soft to wear — never chalky — and are actually infused with fig cactus oil from the Ourika Gardens that I toured. Loveshine Candy Glow Balm, $70 Yes, it's a lip balm — but a really, really nice one. Like, the nicest I own. I love the shade 8B (a warm rose) to prep my lips while I do the rest of my makeup. It's silky and hydrating, but not too heavy. I will be honest, the tint on this is quite sheer; but that isn't a dealbreaker for me since I'm not a huge lipstick person anyway. The packaging is also stunning, and looks like something Marie Antoinette would've kept in her vanity. Libre Eau De Parfum, $290 (90ml) I'm not normally a floral perfume girlie but Libre's gorgeous mix of orange blossom, jasmine, lavender, and musk is like a warm, sensual embrace in olfactive form. According to perfumers Anne Flipo and Carlos Benaim, Libre was born from the idea of starting with a fougère — a traditionally masculine structure within fragrance — and adding feminine, floral notes for a juxtaposition. The result? A sexy, complex floral scent that evokes both strength and sensuality. This article was originally published on Refinery29 US.

Fans 'Shocked' and 'Devastated' by Tragic Death of '80s Punk Rock Legend, age 69 originally appeared on Parade. In 1979, he formed a band so alternative that its very name had labels refusing to sign them. Just a few short years later that verboten band, The Bollock Brothers, would take the punk rock scene by storm, recording nine studio albums, four live records, and 28 singles, touring worldwide and rocking a loyal fanbase. Those fans were rocked in a whole new way, though, on Sunday, when Bollock Brothers band member Pat Pattyn took to Facebook to announce frontman and founder Jock McDonald's death at age 69. 'It is with great sadness in my heart, I have to bring you this terrible news…...sadly, our singer Jock McDonald has died last night in Ireland,' Pattyn wrote. 'His family and all the Bollock Brothers are in shock.' The visionary singer was in his beloved Donegal, Ireland, when he died in a 'freak swimming accident,' according to Pattyn's Facebook post and Donegal Live. McDonald, who was born Patrick O'Donnell, grew up splitting his time between Donegal and Clydebank, Scotland and, according to The Independent, was reportedly working on new music just before his death. Fans from all over the world paid tribute to the punk superstar in photos and written replies to Pattyn's Facebook announcement. 'Oh no, Jock Mcdonald the hero of my youth!' Wrote one distressed fan, 'my heart is broken for this sad news.' Another fan struggling to come to grips with the loss wrote, 'let me try to digest….my heart and love go out to you and the for The Bollock Brothers rise in fame began with an English language cover of iconic French musician Serge Gainsbourg's song 'Harley David (Son of a Bitch).' Other top songs include a 1983 cover of The Sex Pistols album Never Mind the Bollocks and the Bollock Brothers beloved original 'The Slow Removal of the Left Ear of Vincent van Gogh,' which featured Martin Glover from the band Killing Joke. Despite his 'enfanteterrible' performance persona, McDonald was known and will be remembered for his 'eternal kindness and sympathy,' as well as for being a man of deep faith. In a 2014 interview with Dump Magazinetranslated from Dutch, McDonald discussed his Catholic upbringing and described himself as 'very religious.' 'Age makes us put things into perspective and accept everything more,' McDonald told Dump Magazine in the same interview. Then he stepped on stage to perform his set, dedicating fan-favorite song 'Faith Healer' to the interviewer he had just met and was already calling a friend. Will Miley Cyrus Tour to the Celebrate the 'Hannah Montana' 20th Anniversary?

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Can you believe that Miley Cyrus has been living the best of both worlds for almost two decades? Back in March 2006, the singer-songwriter was thrust into the spotlight when her teen comedy series, Hannah Montana, debuted on Disney Channel and quickly became one of the most successful shows in the history of the network. The premise—about a teen girl who lives a normal life by day, performs as a pop star by night—was merely fantasy for Cyrus, who experienced near-instant childhood fame. However, the show helped propel her to become one of the biggest pop stars of her generation, and now, as the series celebrates its 20th anniversary, Cyrus is considering how to commemorate the moment. 'I want to design something really, really special for it because it really was the beginning of all of this,' she told Chris Olsen during an interview for TikTok Radio. 'Without Hannah, there really wouldn't be this kind of—this me.' Hannah Montana ran for four seasons in total, ending its run in January 2011, having earned four Emmy Award nominations in the process. Following the show's end, Cyrus began to pivot toward more mature acting projects and music, generating a few controversies in the process. In the new radio interview, Cyrus opened up about feeling a need to separate her image from the show when she was younger. 'It's crazy to think that I started as a character that I thought was going to be impossible to shed, and now that's something that when I walk into a space, it's looked at as this sense of kind of, nostalgia or something that you have from your childhood,' she said. 'So, that's exciting to get to celebrate that.' Whether this celebration will be a live treatment still remains to be seen. In recent years, Cyrus has announced she has no intention of embarking on traditional stadium tours. The 'End of the World' singer sat down for an interview with Good Morning America on July 15, where she explained why she's veered away from touring. 'I do have the physical ability and I have the opportunity to tour. I wish I had the desire but I don't,' Cyrus confessed. She went on to explain that there doesn't seem to be an 'infrastructure that supports artists.' 'There's artists like Prince that are not here today that lived such a high intensity lifestyle on the road,' she noted. 'It's really hard to maintain sobriety on the road, which is a really important pillar of stability in my life.' She also added: 'You have so many thousands of people screaming at you so dopamine—you're feeling a lot of love—and then you totally crash at the end of the show. You start thinking that one person loving you is not enough. It needs to be 10,000 it needs to be 80,000.' Cyrus pointed out that the whole process is quite difficult on her mental health. Still, during the promotion for her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, Cyrus held a few pop-up performances, indicating that she's not totally done with live shows yet. Moral of the story: We may see Hannah back on that stage yet.
