Commons Speaker orders review after Big Ben clock tower security incident
A security review has been ordered by the Commons Speaker after a man scaled the clock tower housing Big Ben.
Sir Lindsay Hoyle said he wanted to ensure 'lessons are learnt' following the incident, as he thanked those for helping to resolve it safely.
Daniel Day, of Palmerston Road, Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, was charged with intentionally or recklessly causing a public nuisance and trespassing on a protected site.
The 29-year-old man is accused of scaling Elizabeth Tower barefoot at around 7.20am on Saturday, and came down just after midnight on Sunday.
He appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Monday afternoon and spoke to confirm his identity.
No pleas were entered.
Judge Annabel Pilling decided to remand Day into custody until his next court appearance on March 17.
Day allegedly spent more than 16 hours barefoot and holding a Palestine flag while perched on the clock tower of Big Ben, before being lifted to the ground in a cherry picker.
Opening business in the Commons on Monday, Sir Lindsay said: 'The safety and security of all those who work on and visit the parliamentary estate is my top priority.
'I've asked for a review to be undertaken of Saturday's incident. I will ensure lessons are learnt from it.
'I want to thank all those who were involved in helping to ensure Saturday's incident was resolved safely. An individual has been charged.'
In a video posted on Instagram on Saturday evening, the man told negotiators from the ledge he was sat on that he would come down 'on his own terms'.
In the footage, negotiators on an aerial ladder platform appear to raise concerns about an injury to his foot, saying there is 'quite a lot of blood' and that his clothes were not warm enough as temperatures dropped after sunset.

But he insisted he was safe, saying: 'I will come down on my own terms, I have said this. But right now I am saying I am safe.
'If you come towards me you are putting me in danger and I will climb higher.'
In the afternoon, shouts of 'Free Palestine' and 'You are a hero' could be heard from a small group of supporters behind the police cordon at Victoria Embankment.
Videos posted to social media on Saturday allegedly showed the man climbing over a security fence near the Houses of Parliament without being approached by security forces.
In a post on X, Conservative MP Ben Obese-Jecty called for an explanation about how Day allegedly accessed the parliamentary estate.
He said: 'Every day in Parliament I see dozens of armed police officers patrolling Portcullis House and the parliamentary estate. Where were they today?
'On Monday there needs to be a full explanation to MPs and staff as to how this protester was able to evade security so easily.'
Parliamentary tours were cancelled in the wake of the incident.

Michael Tait, Christian Singer, Admits to "Unwanted" Touching of Men
Originally appeared on E! Online Michael Tait is taking accountability. After he was accused of sexual assault and drug abuse by multiple people, the Newsboys singer spoke out on the allegations, which the accusers said took place between 2004 and 2014. "Recent reports of my reckless and destructive behavior, including drug and alcohol abuse and sexual activity are sadly, largely true," Tait wrote in a statement shared to his Instagram June 10. "For some two decades I used and abused cocaine, consumed far too much alcohol, and, at times, touched men in an unwanted sensual way." The four-time Grammy winner went on to say that he's taking full responsibility for the incidents described in the reports, which were first published by Christian media outlet The Roys Report on June 4. "I am ashamed of my life choices and actions, and make no excuses for them," Tait continued. "I will simply call it what God calls it—sin. I don't blame anyone or anything but myself. While I might dispute certain details in the accusations against me, I do not dispute the substance of them." More from E! For one, he stepped away from Newsboys in January, leaving behind remaining members Jody Davis, Duncan Phillips, Jeff Frankenstein and Adam Agee. "I did so to get help," Tait said of quitting the Christian rock group. "I was not healthy, physically or spiritually, and was tired of leading a double life. I spent six weeks at a treatment center in Utah, receiving help that may have saved my life from ultimate destruction." And while the former DC Talk frontman said he's been "clean and sober since," he admitted that he still has "lots of hard work" ahead of him, and he said he'll forever live with the shame of "living two distinctly different lives." As Tait put it, "I have hurt so many people in so many ways, and I will live with that shameful reality the rest of my life. I can only dream and pray for human forgiveness, because I certainly don't deserve it." "I have even accepted the thought that God may be the only One who ultimately and completely forgives me," he continued. "Still, I want to say I'm sorry to everyone I have hurt. I am truly sorry." Less than a week before Tait's confession, The Roys Report published a report accusing Tait of sexual assault and drug abuse that was sourced by over 50 people, three of whom were men who said they experienced his nonconsensual sexual advances when they were in their early 20s. Since the report's release, Tait's Newsboy bandmates have also spoken out on the allegations. 'Last night our hearts were shattered when we read the news alleging drug abuse and inappropriate sexual actions by our former lead singer, Michael Tait,' the band wrote on Instagram June 5. 'First and foremost, our hearts are with the victims who have bravely shared their stories. If you are a victim, we urge you to come forward." They added, "We absolutely do not condone any form of sexual assault.' For free, confidential help, call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-4673 or visit

Alex Cooper's alma mater responds after she accuses college soccer coach of sexual harassment
Days after Alex Cooper accused her former college soccer coach of sexual harassment, Boston University has responded. The host of the popular 'Call Her Daddy' podcast, who made the allegations in a two-part Hulu documentary that premiered Tuesday after screening Sunday at the Tribeca Film Festival, played Division I soccer at the university for three years, during which time Cooper claims coach Nancy Feldman made inappropriate comments about her body and sex life, engaged in controlling behavior and touched her thigh. 'Nancy Feldman was someone I trusted. Someone I believed in. Someone who was supposed to help me grow. Someone who was supposed to protect me,' Cooper wrote Thursday on Instagram. 'But instead she made my life a living hell and abused her power over me.' In the same post, Cooper said she reported the abuse to athletic director Drew Marrochello, who she said ignored her complaints. The university addressed the allegations in a statement obtained Thursday by People and other news outlets. 'Boston University has a zero-tolerance policy for sexual harassment. We have a robust system of resources, support and staff dedicated to student wellbeing and a thorough reporting process through our Equal Opportunity Office,' the statement reads. 'We encourage members of our community to report any concerns, and we remain committed to fostering a safe and secure campus environment for all.' While Cooper's documentary began as a way to show behind-the-scenes footage of her 2023 Unwell Tour, a visit to Boston University — specifically the soccer field — brought her emotions back to the surface, she said in Tuesday's brief episode of 'Call Her Daddy' titled 'My College Soccer Trauma.' 'The minute I stepped on that field, I felt so small,' Cooper said. 'I felt like I was 18 years old again, completely powerless, with no voice.' Cooper said 'everything changed' when she discovered that other women had alleged similar experiences with Feldman. She decided that she needed to speak out after talking to one of the women. 'If a woman in my position, who has power and a platform, is still fearful, is still scared of speaking out about my own lived experience of sexual harassment, how the hell will any other woman feel safe and confident to come forward?' Cooper asked in the episode. Since 'Call Her Alex' premiered, TikTok user @sizzlinghotsarah shared her own experience with Feldman, alleging that the soccer coach harassed her for her sexuality. Cooper responded to the post, 'I'm sick I'm so sorry she did this to you. Reaching out to u privately.' Feldman retired in 2022, but Cooper claims the harassment continues under her successor. 'Call Her Alex' also traces her journey to becoming one of the top podcasters in the world. Featured in the documentary are Cooper's former co-host Sofia Franklyn, husband Matt Kaplan, lifelong friend Lauren McMullen, who is an executive producer on the podcast, and Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports — the previous home of 'Call Her Daddy.' Cooper has become known for her revelatory interviews with everyone from Hailey Bieber and Paris Hilton to Monica Lewinsky and Jane Goodall. Last year, Cooper sat down with then-Vice President and presidential hopeful Kamala Harris — chronicled in the documentary. Cooper created her own podcast network, Unwell, in 2023 and has hired emerging talent including Madeline Argy, Owen Thiele and Alix Earle, who abruptly left in February. In August 2024, Cooper signed a $125-million deal with SiriusXM.
