SDLP councillor left 'so shaken' after receiving 'graphic' mail

BBC News30-06-2025
Police enquiries are ongoing into a parcel sent to SDLP Mid-Ulster Councillor Malachy Quinn which contained "vile" and "deeply offensive" images. Quinn received the parcel of more than 40 pages of "graphic" material including what he believes to be abortion images, depictions of Adolf Hitler as well as anti-Semitic material, at the Mid Ulster District Council office on Thursday evening. Police received a report the following day. The parcel was sent using a stamp from the Republic of Ireland.
Speaking to BBC News NI, Quinn said receiving the parcel left him feeling "so shaken". Quinn opened the parcel before a meeting with council colleagues on Thursday evening. "The abortion stuff really knocked me for six and confused me," he said. In a statement he said the material "clearly intended to intimidate me and stop me speaking out". "Let me be absolutely clear: it will not work," he added. "I am proud of the work I have done to challenge prejudice, and no anonymous coward hiding behind hate mail will ever change that."

Man dies after being run over by wife in car park as he got out to clear height barrier in ‘tragic accident'

AN ELDERLY man died after he was run over by his wife in a "tragic accident" at a car park, an inquest has concluded. David Charles Seymour Chivers, 72, had travelled to Priorswell Road car park in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, with his wife Elaine Valentine on September 12, 2024. The couple were making preparations for an event they were holding the following week at Bracebridge Recreation Ground, adjacent to the car park. However, after David exited the vehicle to try to remove a height barrier at the rear of the car park, he was hit by the car. The inquest into his death at Nottingham Coroner's Court heard that the couple were initially standing together beside the barrier before Elaine - who attended the inquest - sat in the driver's seat of their car. While this was going on, David continued to try to reach a padlock on the barrier. However, this was situated at a height that made doing so difficult, coroner Sarah Wood said. At the time of the accident, David was standing next to the driver's side of the car, with the driver's door open. While still attempting to reach the padlock, the couple's automatic Vauxhall Insignia reversed, knocking David to the ground before he was "suddenly run over". A post-mortem examination found the 72-year-old die from a head injury, having sustained severe trauma to the brain that was "incompatible with life". Recording the death as accidental, coroner Wood said: "Mr Chivers died of a head injury he sustained when the vehicle reversed, causing him to fall to the ground and suddenly ran over him. "He placed himself in a vulnerable position and when Ms Valentine pressed the accelerator, the vehicle reacted abruptly and caused a sudden increase in speed. This left him with little time to react and knocked him to the ground. "What happened next was a tragic event and I find it is more likely than not that Ms Valentine panicked in an attempt to move the car away from Mr Chivers. Due to the vehicle being in reverse, this led to the vehicle moving towards him and suddenly running over him, causing the head injury, which was his cause of death. "This was a tragic accident which I'm sure Ms Valentine is very unlikely to recover from." is your go-to destination for the best celebrity news, real-life stories, jaw-dropping pictures and must-see video. It was meant to be sleepy Cumberland Local Council meeting. Then SCREAMING began and a woman burst into tears

A fiery screaming match erupted between councillors at a Cumberland Council meeting in Sydney 's west after one local politician told another to 'shut up' - leaving a resident in tears. The heated clash broke out on Wednesday night as independent councillor Ahmed Ouf was speaking in support of a motion regarding next year's Easter celebrations. Following apparent interjections from the other side of the chamber by Labor councillor Diane Colman, Mr Ouf snapped. 'Shut up when I'm talking, OK,' he fumed. 'I beg your pardon, Councillor,' Mayor Ola Hamed interjected, as tensions escalated. 'When I'm talking, this is my time, not your time,' Cr Ouf told Cr Colman. 'When I talk, you shut up, OK?' Cr Colman interrupted: 'Oh, point of order, Mayor, point of order!' Cr Ouf stood his ground. 'Why is she talking while I'm talking? Why is she taking from my time?' he said. Cr Colman fired back: 'How dare you!' Cr Ouf replied: 'You just keep your mouth shut while I'm talking. I never, ever spoke when you were talking or having time.' The comment sparked an explosive outburst from Cr Colman, who rose from her seat. 'You cannot speak to me like that,' she screamed from across the room. 'You show respect, you show respect,' Cr Ouf yelled back. Cr Colman snapped back: 'You show me some respect. 'How dare you speak to me like that. How dare you.' The screaming match during Wednesday night's council meeting has since gone viral online The blazing row continued for seven minutes until the mayor called a brief adjournment. The fiery scenes unfolded in front of a packed public gallery, where a distraught woman had to be consoled afterwards, according to Libertarian Councillor Steve Christou. 'It put everyone who was there in an unhealthy and unsafe environment,' he told Daily Mail Australia. 'I felt sorry for the council staff, who shouldn't have to work under these conditions or put up with this... 'I also felt for the crowd, as we had a full public gallery there that night. 'One woman was crying because she felt unsafe.' He added that Cr Ouf apologised afterwards and claimed that Cr Colman often interrupted while other councillors had the floor. 'I've previously raised concerns about this behaviour,' he said. Cr Colman stood by her actions, claiming she is also frequently interrupted and bullied by other councillors in the chamber. 'He (Cr Ouf) told me to shut up four times,' she said. 'Enough is enough. It's time that councils stop the bullying and misogyny that goes on.' She confirmed Cr Ouf later apologised. 'The matter is closed,' Cr Colman said. Councillor Ouf told the Daily Mail that his comments had nothing to do with gender and reiterated calls for councillors not to be interrupted. 'I wished it hadn't happened,' he said. 'This is my first term and I have never interrupted or harassed another councillor. 'I was speaking about an important matter and I was interrupted, which shouldn't have been allowed.' Labor councillor Glenn Elmore chose not to weigh in on the stoush but confirmed it wasn't an isolated incident. 'This type of behavior occurs during every council meeting and the authorities do nothing to prevent it happening again,' he told the Daily Mail. 'I have spoken to the deputy general manager and was told council staff have taken all action to prevent this behaviour occurring but it continues.
