Vadodara Bridge collapse: Death toll rises to 13, ‘exact reason' for accident to be probed
A slab of the Gambhira bridge, located on Mahisagar river which connects central Gujarat to the Saurashtra region of the state, collapsed, due to which several vehicles fell into the river. The accident occurred on Wednesday morning.
The bridge was located near Padra town in the district.
Superintendent of Police (Vadodara rural) Rohan Anand said informed about 10 to 15 metres long slab of the bridge collapsed at around 7.30 am.
Five vehicles -- two trucks, two vans and an autorickshaw -- fell into the river after the bridge collapsed. Two other vehicles that came dangerously close to falling were dragged away to a safer location, the collector said.
A total of 13 persons died in the bridge collapse included a child, Padra police inspector Vijay Charan said. While Three persons on a two-wheeler, which fell into the river, managed to swim to safety.
Five out of the nine rescued persons suffered injuries and were undergoing treatment at the SSG Hospital in Vadodara, but none of the injured persons are in a critical condition.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed grief over the tragedy and announced ex gratia of ₹ 2 lakh and ₹ 4 lakh, respectively, to the next of kin of each deceased, and ₹ 50,000 as compensation to the injured.
In a post on X, Patel said teams of the state roads and buildings department and private engineers specialising in bridge construction have been instructed to immediately reach the spot and conduct a preliminary investigation into the causes of the collapse and other technical matters, and submit a report.
"The fire brigade team of the local municipality and Vadodara Municipal Corporation are working with boats and swimmers at the accident site as part of the rescue and relief operations. The NDRF team has also reached the scene and joined the rescue operation," the CM said.
An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM," the PMO said on X
Gujarat minister Rushikesh Patel said the bridge was constructed in 1985, and its maintenance was carried out periodically as and when required. The exact reason behind the incident will be probed, he said.
The nearly 900-metre-long Gambhira bridge has 23 piers and connects Vadodara and Anand districts of Gujarat. It was inaugurated in 1985.

FSDA suspends 133 drug licences, cancels 20 in June
Bengaluru: Enforcement officers of the Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration department have suspended 133 drug licences and cancelled 20 drug licences in June for violations of the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, officials said on Friday. The move was initiated after the officials concerned conducted 2,544 inspections over the last month, they said. According to the department, drug-testing laboratories in Bengaluru, Hubballi and Ballari analysed 1,333 samples in June. Among those, 1,292 samples were declared as 'Standard Quality' and 41 as 'Not of Standard Quality'. From April to June, the enforcement officers filed a total of 81 cases in courts against firms that violated the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and the Rules thereunder, the department said. The department has ensured that 'Not of Standard Quality' drugs worth more than Rs 40 lakh were recalled from the market and seized. A special drive was conducted across the blood centres in the state and a total of 122 such centres were inspected. Based on the various violations observed, show-cause notices were issued to 44 blood centres and compliance letters were issued to 80 blood centres,' the department said in a statement. According to the statement, in compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, food safety, quality and hygiene aspects were inspected across the state, covering 1,557 street-food vendors, in June. Notices were issued to 406 establishments where violations were identified and fines totalling Rs 44,500 were imposed on the spot, the statement added.

The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court on Friday granted bail to Sujata Vilas Mahajan, former Chief Executive Officer of Babaji Date Mahila Sahakari Bank Limited, Yavatmal, in connection with a multi-crore financial fraud case. The court held her arrest to be illegal, citing procedural lapses during her Urmila Joshi-Phalke, who presided over the matter, emphasised the importance of constitutional rights, saying, "The guarantee of 'life and liberty' as enshrined under Article 21 of the Constitution of India available to citizens of this country cannot be denied even to an accused who is in custody and surely not to a suspect who is sought to be converted to an accused on an investigation and then from an accused to a convict on trial."advertisementShe further added, "It is an obligation upon the state as well as on the court to ensure that there is no infringement of the indefeasible right of a citizen to life and liberty, which he cannot be deprived of without following the procedure established by law." The total scam is reportedly valued at over Rs 242 court acknowledged that Mahajan's involvement in the financial offence was revealed during the investigation. However, it noted that her arrest took place after sunset and without informing her relatives, both of which are violations of legal procedure. As a result, the court deemed the arrest for Mahajan, Senior Counsel SV Manohar argued that the chargesheet lacked direct evidence of her involvement in the fraud. He also highlighted that the outstanding loans linked to her husband had already been repaid. Stressing on the procedural flaws, he said Mahajan's arrest after sunset and the failure to inform her relatives violated her fundamental the bail, Public Prosecutor DV Chauhan contended that the investigation revealed Mahajan's role in sanctioning and disbursing loans without proper authorisation. He described the case as a serious economic offence, affecting nearly 37,000 court pointed out discrepancies in the records related to Mahajan's arrest and the lack of communication with her family.
