Flying High: Toronto Blue Jays on upswing entering home series against Phillies

Yahoo2 days ago

TORONTO — A visit by the woeful Athletics came at an ideal time for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Canada's lone big-league team was in a tailspin before finding its form last week. Toronto has won five in a row and sat a half-game out of an American League wild-card spot entering Monday's games.

The Blue Jays, who were idle Monday, will continue their homestand Tuesday night against the 36-23 Philadelphia Phillies, a team they will play six times over the next fortnight.
OFFENCE CLICKING
After managing just six runs over a six-game road trip, the Blue Jays kicked off their current homestand by scoring a whopping 39 runs over a four-game sweep of the A's.
Addison Barger homered in three straight games over the weekend as Toronto went deep 11 times over the series.
The Blue Jays have been getting contributions up and down the lineup of late. Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer and Alejandro Kirk have anchored the top half of the batting order.

Barger, Ernie Clement, Nathan Lukes, Myles Straw and Jonatan Clase -- all hitting at least .267 -- have helped turn the lineup over with timely hitting.
However, two of Toronto's big-ticket acquisitions have struggled this season. Andres Gimenez and Anthony Santander, both on the injured list, have sub-.200 averages with OPS marks under .600.
BULLISH BULLPEN
One of Toronto's most-improved areas is the bullpen, which is ranked ninth in the major leagues with a 3.47 earned-run average.
That's down significantly from the bullpen's 4.82 ERA in 2024, the second-worst mark among the 30 teams.

With setup man Yimi Garcia on the injured list, Brendon Little (3-0, 1.37), Mason Fluharty (3-1, 3.33), Chad Green (1-1, 3.91) and Yariel Rodriguez (0-0, 2.73) have stepped up in his absence.
Closer Jeff Hoffman has earned 13 saves in 16 opportunities. His three blown saves have boosted his ERA to a rather bloated 5.81.
SO-SO STARTERS
Injuries and middling performances have led to a starting rotation that has been serviceable but capable of much more.
Veterans Jose Berrios, Kevin Gausman and Chris Bassitt have been steady with the three right-handers posting remarkably similar numbers (all between 3.80-3.90 ERA, 66-70 IP and 65-70 strikeouts).
Bowden Francis (2-6, 5.04) has been unable to duplicate his strong second half from 2024, and Max Scherzer has pitched only three innings due to a thumb issue.
Scherzer's absence has forced manager John Schneider to turn to spot starters and openers, often for so-called bullpen games.
The good news for the Blue Jays is Scherzer is throwing live bullpen sessions now, and Alek Manoah (elbow surgery) could make his season debut this summer.
INJURED VARSHO
After missing the first few weeks of the season as he built up after shoulder surgery, Daulton Varsho delivered an immediate spark to the lineup when he returned.
The Gold Glove centre-fielder provided stellar defence and hit eight homers with 20 RBIs over 24 games before landing back on the injured list.
Varsho strained his left hamstring over the weekend while trying to stretch a double into a triple. He's out on a week-to-week basis.
Utilityman Davis Schneider was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to fill in.
NUMBERS GAME
It's early days with almost two-thirds of the season still to go, but the 31-28 Blue Jays appear to be a coin flip to make the post-season.
Baseball Prospectus' PECOTA standings peg Toronto's playoff chances at 48.6 per cent, slightly ahead of FanGraphs' projections at 43.1 per cent.

Cleveland started the day in the American League's first wild-card spot at 32-26. Toronto was one of five teams within 2 1/2 games of the Guardians.
The Blue Jays made the playoffs in three of four years before finishing last in the East Division standings in 2024. Toronto hasn't won a playoff game since 2016.

Samsung Galaxy S25 vs Google Pixel 9 deals: Both at all-time low prices!

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority Are you looking for a great phone that won't break the bank? If you still want something high-end, I usually recommend phones like the Samsung Galaxy S25 or the Google Pixel 9 base models. These still offer a premium experience, but the price is more reasonable. They also happen to be smaller phones, which many of us prefer. They are also both at their all-time low prices right now, but which one should you pick? Buy the Samsung Galaxy S25 for $624.99 ($175 off) Buy the Google Pixel 9 for $599 ($200 off) Both of these offers come from Amazon, but there are some things you need to keep in mind. The Samsung Galaxy S25 deal is only available for two color models: Silver Shadow and Mint. In the case of the Google Pixel 9, all color versions are equally discounted. Samsung Galaxy S25 Samsung Galaxy S25 Samsung Galaxy S25 Refined software, AI smarts, and next-gen hardware With an emphasis on AI features, and a move to Gemini, the Samsung Galaxy S25 is an exciting update to the Galaxy S line. Equipped with a 6.2-inch FHD+ display, Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC, 12GB of RAM, a powerful 50MP camera, and updated hardware materials, we expect big things from the base model of Samsung's 2025 flagship phone. See price at Amazon Save $175.00 Limited Time Deal! The Samsung Galaxy S25 series has an excellent reputation. In fact, S25 phones might be even more popular than Google's own devices! It's for a good reason, though. These phones are awesome, offering a premium experience that is really hard to beat. We'll be straight and tell you it isn't quite as amazing as the Samsung Galaxy S25 Plus and Ultra, but it is still a high-end handset. To be honest, most people will do just fine with this phone, and the others may be a bit overkill for many. The Samsung Galaxy S25 still comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and 12GB of RAM. Performance won't really suffer, and this phone can still handle any app, game, or task. As already mentioned, the phone is smaller, so it has a 6.2-inch display with a Full HD+ resolution. It still has a 120Hz refresh rate, so motion is just as smooth. It's still a Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2x panel, so it looks gorgeous, with vibrant colors and deep blacks. C. Scott Brown / Android Authority Furthermore, the design is gorgeous, offering a sleek look and a really solid construction. It has an aluminum frame, and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front and back. Just like all other high-end modern phones, it also gets an IP68 rating. It has a really nice camera system. It's actually the same as the Samsung Galaxy S25 Plus one. While neither of these phones can match the Ultra model in terms of picture quality, both can take outstanding photos. The battery is smaller at 4,000mAh, but we found it can still last a whole day on a full charge. When depleted, you can juice up the phone at 25W wired or 15W wireless speeds. All things considered, you'll get a phone with plenty of power, a really nice design, and an overall higher-end experience. The Samsung UI is also more complex, which means it has a bunch of cool features you don't always find in other smartphones. It helps that it also gets a seven-year update promise, which is among the best update commitments in the industry. The only brand that matches Samsung in this regard is Google. If you want to learn more, we have a full Samsung Galaxy S25 review. Google Pixel 9 Google Pixel 9 Google Pixel 9 The vanilla Pixel 9. The Pixel 9 rocks a 6.3-inch display, Tensor G4 chipset, 12GB of RAM, and at least 128GB of internal storage. See price at Amazon Save $200.00 The Samsung Galaxy S25 is excellent, but many of you prefer the Google experience. The UI is cleaner, and Pixel phones are always among the first to get Android updates. The Google Pixel 9 is technically also a high-end phone, but it is the smaller brother in its premium family, just like the S25. They are direct competitors, so the offerings are quite similar. The Pixel 9 still has a great design, features an aluminum frame, and even has the same Gorilla Glass Victus construction, along with the IP68 rating. This phone is quite powerful, featuring a Google Tensor G4 chipset and 12GB of RAM. The performance will be more than enough to keep the majority of people happy. You would honestly need to push the phone really hard to see it slow down. C. Scott Brown / Android Authority The display is also smaller, at 6.3 inches. It's an OLED panel with a Full HD+ resolution. And yes, it also has a 120Hz refresh rate. Even battery life is about the same, averaging about a full day per charge. It charges a bit faster, but not by much. It can reach 27W speeds wired or 15W wirelessly. Pixels are known for their cameras, and the Google Pixel 9 is no exception. Of course, the Pro models have better cameras, but the Pixel 9 still shoots outstanding photos. Remember we told you the only brand that matches Samsung in update promises is Google? Yeah, the Google Pixel 9 also gets a seven-year update commitment. You really can't go wrong with the Pixel 9. It's likely a better option if you like the vanilla Android UI, would prefer getting faster Android updates, and like Google's design language better. Otherwise, the experience will actually be quite similar. Here's our full Google Pixel 9 review, if you're interested. Both of these phones are amazing, and right now, they offer a bunch of value for your hard-earned dollars. If you want more help, though, here is our full comparison between the Samsung Galaxy S25 and the Google Pixel 9. Of course, you can always refer to our list of the best Android phones to find some other alternatives.

Paul Skenes trade grades for ex-MLB GM's Cubs-Pirates hypothetical

The post Paul Skenes trade grades for ex-MLB GM's Cubs-Pirates hypothetical appeared first on ClutchPoints. Paul Skenes broke onto the scene in 2024 when the Pittsburgh Pirates brought him up to the major leagues in 2024. He went 11-3 en route to starting in the All-Star game, making Skenes the first Pirates pitcher to do so in 50 years. In 2025, Skenes has shone as an individual, but the team around him has faltered. The Cubs could be a dark horse team to entice Pittsburgh to give him up this summer. Advertisement Former Major League Baseball general manager Jim Bowden put together deals from every team for Skenes, and the Chicago Cubs' package features top prospects like Matt Shaw and Cade Horton. Almost every potential deal for the 23-year-old would require a team's best young players. The Cubs are one of the more interesting packages in the league; their top two prospects are already playing in the majors. Skenes and the Pirates have been fighting trade rumors since they started after the team's slow start. However, experts like Bowden continue to explore the possibilities. According to him, the Chicago Cubs' players provide the most immediate upgrades to the Pittsburgh. Proposed package: RHP Cade Horton, 3B Matt Shaw, OF Kevin Alcántara, SS Juan Tomas 'The Pirates would acquire Horton, the Cubs' top pitching prospect, who could immediately go into their rotation, and he'd come with an extra year of control than they have with Skenes,' Bowden. 'Shaw could be moved to second base. Alcántara could be promoted to the majors to play left field, and he'd be an instant upgrade in the Pirates' lineup. Tomas, 17, is a solid prospect who could develop into their long-term solution at shortstop. Meanwhile, Skenes would make the first-place Cubs a real October threat.' Why the Chicago Cubs should make the trade Adding Skenes would take teams from the fringe of contention to serious World Series consideration. The Cubs' rotation is led by Shota Imanaga, who would be in All-Star consideration if he wasn't on Chicago's injury list. Behind him, Matthew Boyd and Jameson Taillon have been serviceable, but Craig Counsell is in need of a second star. Skenes fills that hole emphatically and could be the team's ace for the next decade if they can keep him in a Cubs uniform. Advertisement Both Imanaga and Skenes have ERAs less than 2.90. If they joined forces, they would be one of best pitching duos the league has to offer. For a team that is always done in by their pitching in the postseason, bringing in the young ace would give the Cubs peace of mind in tense playoff matchups. Skenes has yet to pitch in the playoffs, but odds of him translating poorly from the regular season to the playoffs are slim considering just how dominant he has been so far in his career. Shaw and Horton recently made their MLB debuts for Chicago and have impressed so far. Giving them up leaves some immediate holes in the Cubs' roster, but it is well worth the price to bring in Skenes. However, losing both of them, along with two promising prospects still in the minor leagues is enough to give Chicago's front office a reason to step back and look at the deal closely. Many of the Cubs' concerns would go away if they sign Pete Crow-Armstrong to a long-term deal. Doing so would secure their star of the future and allow them to be more aggressive. The move guts the top of their farm system, but Chicago is capable of developing talent as well as most other teams in the league. Cubs Trade Grade: B+ Why the Pittsburgh Pirates should make the trade Oneil Cruz, Bryan Reynolds, and Ke'Bryan Hayes are the leaders of the Pittsburgh Pirates' offense. However, Cruz and Skenes have both been thrown out as potential trade candidates. The future of the Pirates cannot be carried by just their ace, no matter how good he is. For that reason, Pittsburgh could make the tough call to bring in a variety of players instead of putting all their hopes into one. Advertisement The Pirates moved on from Derek Shelton, a sign that more changes are coming. Things around Pittsburgh are in a state of flux, including the roster. However, losing so many games makes it difficult for the organization to determine which players are worth keeping. Because of that, the Pirates could chose to stand still at the deadline. If they do make a deal, they need to make sure it is the right one for their future. Pittsburgh needs a miraculous turnaround to return to contention. Despite losing so many games, fans expect improvement from a roster that surprised the league in the second half of last season. Bringing in prospects would definitely give the team a different look. Horton would immediately have a spot in the rotation. Straw would move from third base, but the Pirates' infield is in need of an upgrade as well. Alcántara is a bigger question mark. With Andrew McCutchen mentoring him, though, he could turn into an asset in the field. The Pirates struck gold when they picked Skenes in the 2023 draft. However, if they team can't pay him what he will want in free agency, the best move could be a trade. The Cubs give them players to build around, but it is a tough sell to their fans. However, big risks are necessary for the Pirates to eventually get over the hump. Pirates Trade Grade: B
