Former disused castle in South Wales now 'breathtaking, real-life Disney castle'

Yahoo5 days ago
Tucked away in Fforest Fawr is a formerly disused castle that now rises from the ancient beech wood trees like a "vision from a fairy tale" or something from a Disney movie.
Castell Coch, or "Red Castle", is well-known for its highly decorated interiors and rich furnishings.
It is a popular attraction, regularly voted by the public as their "favourite building in Wales", according to Cadw.
Describing the South Wales castle, the Welsh Government service added: "Given free rein by the third Marquess of Bute, architect William Burges didn't hold back.
"The highly decorated interiors and rich furnishings of Castell Coch make it a dazzling masterpiece of the High Victorian era.
"But it's no exotic folly. Underneath the mock-medieval trappings you can still trace the impressive remains of a 13th-century castle, once used as a hunting lodge by the ruthless Marcher lord Gilbert de Clare."
The history behind Castell Coch
Castell Coch, which is located above the village of Tongwynlais and can be seen from the M4, dates back to the 11th century.

The ruins of this castle were then acquired by John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, in 1760, as part of a marriage settlement, BBC Countryfile explains.
"He commissioned the architect William Burges to rebuild the castle as a country residence – after having commissioned Burges to also design the reconstruction of Cardiff Castle," the BBC experts added.
Burges then set about creating a "magnificent medieval fantasy" built around the two towers and a lofty hall from Gilbert de Clare's 13th-century fortress.
Cadw explains: "He rebuilt the gatehouse, raised the height of the towers and equipped them with conical roofs topped with copper-gilt weathervanes.
"He installed a wall-walk and a timber fighting gallery.
"But this authentic recreation still came with all mod cons, including central heating. There was even a metal bell-pull for visitors to tug."
However, the Earl of Bute fell out of love with the project before its completion, and with Burges dying suddenly in 1881, some rooms were never finished.
The castle eventually fell into disuse until it was requisitioned for British and American troops during World War II.
In 1950, the 5th Marquess of Bute placed the castle in the care of the Ministry of Works, and gave Cardiff Castle to the city, according to BBC Countryfile.
The castle is now cared for by Cadw.
Which TV shows and movies have been filmed at Castell Coch?
Castell Coch recently featured on a list of "the 10 utterly breathtaking, real-life Disney castles from around the world", released by BBC Countryfile.
And while it hasn't featured in any Disney movies or TV shows, it has played host to various film crews.
The BBC used Castell Coch for the filming of Wolf Hall, starring Damian Lewis, while The Worst Witch was also filmed there.

Princess Cruises ship gets battered by Storm Floris

Princess Cruises ship gets battered by Storm Floris originally appeared on TravelHost. As Storm Floris hit the U.K. with raging winds and heavy rain on Aug. 4, several cruise ships sailing British Isles cruises in the region got caught in angry seas. In Scotland, Storm Floris is being called the 'most damaging summer storm in recent memory' by electricity providers. The storm brought wind gusts of more than 100mph in some parts of northern Scotland, leaving tens of thousands of homes without power and suspending trains while crews worked to clear fallen cruise ships sailing in and around Scotland this week on British Isles cruises, the storm meant missed ports of call and sailing through some rough seas to get to calmer waters and alternate ports. While cruise ship captains will always sail the safest route possible and avoid putting their ships and their passengers in danger, sometimes heavy seas can't be entirely avoided. Although Princess Cruises' Regal Princess canceled two of its scheduled port stops in northern Scotland to stay ahead of Storm Floris, the ship still had to sail through some turbulent waters in order to avoid the worst of the weather. Doug Parker shared details on the rough sea conditions Regal Princess faced as it outran Storm Floris in Scotland, and other cruise news, including a wave of MSC Cruises cancellations, on the Aug. 5 edition of Cruise News Floris thrashes cruise ships in the British Isles Cruise News Today Transcript: This is Cruise News Today with Doug Parker. Britain's foreign minister went fishing with JD Vance. Now, he could be fined for it

Last week, British foreign minister David Lammy went fishing with US Vice President JD Vance at his retreat in the English countryside. Now, he could be fined for doing so. Lammy on Wednesday referred himself to the UK's environment watchdog for fishing without a rod license – an offense in Britain that could land him with a fine of £2,500 ($3,400). 'The foreign secretary has written to the Environment Agency over an administrative oversight that meant the appropriate licenses had not been acquired for fishing on a private lake as part of a diplomatic engagement at Chevening House last week,' a Foreign Office spokesperson said. 'As soon as the foreign secretary was made aware of the administrative error, he successfully purchased the relevant rod fishing licenses,' the spokesperson added. 'He also wrote to the Environment Agency notifying them of the error, demonstrating how it would be rectified, and thanking them for their work protecting Britain's fisheries.' Lammy recently hosted Vance at Chevening House, his grace-and-favor retreat in the southern county of Kent, known as the Garden of England. After his diplomatic engagements, the vice president has stayed in the country for a family vacation. Although Vance has been critical of the British government for what he claims is its heavy-handed approach to free speech, he and Lammy held a chummy press conference after their illegal fishing trip. 'Unfortunately, the one strain on the special relationship is that all of my kids caught fish, but the foreign secretary did not,' Vance told reporters. The fish that were caught by the group were returned to the private lake, according to Britain's PA Media news agency. Those aged 13 or older must have a rod license to freshwater fish in England and Wales, under laws aiming to protect fish stocks and make fisheries sustainable. 'Everyone who goes fishing needs a licence to help improve our rivers, lakes and the sport anglers love,' said an Environment Agency spokesperson, according to PA. 'We understand the relevant licences have been purchased.'
