Alleged South Korean call-centre gangster leads police to bust his own gang
The Chon Buri immigration police received a distress call from Hyunsub An, 31, at 11:06pm on Wednesday, stating that he had been attacked and felt insecure.
The police searched for An throughout the night and located him at a house in Na Jomthien Sub-district, Pattaya, in Chon Buri's Bang Lamung district early Thursday.
Police found An injured, with bruises on his face, head, and body. His neck also showed signs of being noosed.
However, police discovered that An's name was on a list of suspects involved in a South Korean call-centre gang, following a rescue operation of another South Korean on June 21. At that time, police rescued a South Korean man and uncovered 22 other South Koreans operating a call-centre gang to deceive their fellow citizens.
After interrogation, An admitted that he had been betrayed and assaulted by his own gang.
He agreed to lead the Chon Buri immigration police to raid two houses in Bang Lamung, where police found and arrested a Chinese man, a South Korean woman, and six South Korean men.
They were charged with running a call-centre gang and were taken to the Chon Buri immigration office for legal action. - The Nation/ANN

Nearly P3mil shabu seized in Zamboanga weeklong ops
ZAMBOANGA CITY: Authorities arrested eight drug suspects and confiscated shabu (crystal methamphetamine) worth P2.9 million (US$51,101) across the Zamboanga Peninsula on Aug. 1 to 8. The most significant drug haul took place on Aug. 7 in this city, where P2.5 million worth of shabu were separately confiscated from three high-value targets, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula Director Brig. Gen. Eleazar Matta said in a news release Sunday (Aug 10). 'Such accomplishments are a direct result of inter-unit collaboration, actionable intelligence and the professionalism of our personnel,' Matta said in a statement. One of the suspects, aged 22, was arrested in a buy-bust operation at a motel in Barangay Guiwan. He yielded some 250 grams of shabu worth P1.7 million. The two others arrested in Barangay San Roque and Barangay Tulungatung on Aug. 7 had a combined 130 grams of shabu worth more than P1.2 million. 'The four other suspects were arrested during separate anti-drug operations in Zamboanga del Norte within the same period,' Matta said. SUPP Complaints Bureau chief seeks federal intervention on scam trafficking cases
KUCHING: Sarawak United Peoples' Party (SUPP) Public Complaints Bureau chief, Milton Foo, recently met with Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability and Sarikei MP, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, to appeal for federal government intervention on the growing number of online scam and human trafficking cases. During the meeting, Foo informed Huang that since he took office in 2022, the bureau has received over 100 complaints regarding online scams, with total losses exceeding RM10 million. These scams include low-interest loan scams, high-return online and stock investment fraud, fake law enforcement officer impersonation scams (such as court, tax department, and immigration officers), parcel delivery scams, online marketplace fraud, AI video scams, and romance scams. In a recent statement, Foo also highlighted 45 human trafficking cases, involving victims from various ethnic backgrounds, including 31 Chinese, nine Malay, and five Dayak individuals, with ages ranging from 19 to 52. These victims hail from urban and rural areas across Sarawak, including Kuching, Sri Aman, Sibu, Sarikei, Bintangor, Kapit, Engkilili, Bintulu, and Miri. They were lured by high-paying job advertisements on social media or by friends to go to countries like Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and the UAE, or were transited through Singapore to other regions in Europe or South America. Foo confirmed that out of the 45 cases, 39 victims have been successfully rescued and repatriated, while three are missing, two are still trapped in scam compounds, and one is currently being held in a foreign immigration detention centre or prison. Huang, who is also the Repok assemblyman, expressed serious concern over the increasing cases of online scams and human trafficking. He pledged to discuss the matter with his federal cabinet colleagues to formulate countermeasures and review existing laws and policies to strengthen the fight against cybercrime and protect the public. He also emphasised the importance of increasing public awareness alongside government enforcement efforts and urged Foo to continue his efforts in assisting Sarawakian victims of human trafficking to return home to their families as soon as possible, and offered his help in communicating and coordinating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
