PETALING Jaya in Selangor will take to the regional stage as host city for Placemaker Week Asean (PWA) 2025 happening from Aug 27 to 30.
The annual summit is dedicated to exchanging ideas for creating vibrant and people-centric public spaces, with this year's event at MBPJ Civic Hall themed 'Places That Have Value for People'.
Aiming to promote safe, inclusive and accessible public spaces by showcasing successful local and regional placemaking efforts and universal design, PWA builds on the success of its 2019 edition in Kuala Lumpur and returns with a stronger focus on how urban spaces can uplift lives.
PWA 2025 is a collaboration between Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) and Placemaking Malaysia.
During the launch at the city council's headquarters, Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon said MBPJ's appointment was a significant recognition of the city's commitment to inclusive, community-focused urban development.
'This selection proves that Petaling Jaya continues to grow as a progressive and trusted city at the regional level.
'PWA is not just a conference; it is a platform that champions public space as the heart of urban life.
'This is where the values of humanity, culture and inclusivity are celebrated by residents,' he said.
The summit is expected to attract hundreds of local and international participants, with attendees including urban planners, community leaders, government officials and private sector representatives from across South-East Asia.
The agenda includes keynote addresses from a number of Asean mayors, workshops, live urban intervention projects as well as technical visits to notable placemaking sites in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
Locally, MBPJ plans to use the summit as a living laboratory for Petaling Jaya and will highlight efforts to maximise underused spaces and make them more community-friendly.
Examples include toy libraries and upgraded public facilities built with affordability and accessibility in mind.
MBPJ Development Planning Department director Lee Lih Shyan said the city would showcase its initiatives, including sessions led by its Children's Council members to ensure youth perspectives were integrated into urban planning.
'We want to create opportunities that will make it more sustainable and liveable for the community.
'With the help of international placemaker attendees, we can also take suggestions and look at how we can add value to the Section 8 area,' Lih Shyan added.
Mohamad Zahri, however, acknowledged challenges in retrofitting older parts of the city.
'In PJ Old Town for example, creating a pedestrian lane for all ages is not suitable,' he said.
'Adding facilities for the disabled can also be challenging in narrow areas.'
MIP president Mazrina Abdul Khalid emphasised the event's role in knowledge sharing.
With 25 international and 24 local speakers confirmed for the summit, she said the conference would offer a crucial opportunity for knowledge transfer between experts, developers and the community.
'This summit is important in enhancing our understanding of how to further upgrade areas for placemaking.
'This also aligns with MBPJ's own initiatives to improve public spaces through beauty and safety,' she said.

S'gor wants safer public washrooms for the elderly

Ng: Older people need appropriate safety features and consistent facilities. Local councils told to provide hand rails, grab bars, non-slip floors SELANGOR government wants all local councils to adopt age-friendly designs at public washrooms, to better accommodate senior citizens. State local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said such amenities would ensure older adults could live independently and move around with confidence. 'Improvements for public washrooms through better design include hand rails, grab bars, non-slip flooring and even a panic button,' he said when met by StarMetro in Shah Alam. Ng said that based on the Statistics Department's data, the number of individuals aged 60 and above in Selangor last year stood at 853,760. 'As people age, they often face various challenges that can affect their daily routines and independence. 'A decrease in physical strength, mobility and balance is common, and the simple task of using a public toilet becomes difficult,' he said. 'Older people need appropriate safety features and consistent facilities.' Ng said it was high time city, municipal and district councils made public toilets elderly-friendly by applying universal design principles. 'Consult with senior citizens to get feedback to ensure the design and placement incorporate their needs,' he advised. Ng said he would raise the issue at Selangor Local Government Development Standing Committee (Stanco) to get all local councils to improve user friendliness of such facilities. 'Councils that are able to improve public washrooms must follow universal design principles with input from locals. 'The Stanco meeting will discuss better approaches to a more inclusive and age-friendly environment,' he added. Stanco meetings are held every three months to discuss or review policies and propose solutions for local issues. When contacted, Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon said the city council's Health and Environmental Services Department managed 14 public toilets. 'Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) follows Universal Design Technical Service Guidelines for the city's development projects, as we want to create inclusive urban environments,' he said. He added that MBPJ was working towards meeting the needs of the city's ageing residents.

Warships berth in Penang for Asean naval gathering

Naval networking: Warships from Asean region docking at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal for naval events from Aug 15 to 22 under Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship 2025. — ZHAFARAN NASIB/The Star GEORGE TOWN: Ten warships carrying 1,600 crew members have berthed at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal for a week to strengthen regional naval ties. This comes ahead of the Asean Navies' City Parade (ANCP) at the Esplanade in Padang Kota Lama tomorrow. The public will also be allowed to board several of them to see their systems up close. Seven of the warships are from other Asean nations and three from the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN). RMN offshore patrol vessel KD Kedah arrived yesterday to mark a series of maritime defence events until Aug 22 under Malaysia's Asean chairmanship 2025. It was followed by frigates KD Lekiu and KD Lekir, corvettes RSS Vigour (Singapore), BRP Antonio Luna (Philippines), KRI Bung Tomo (Indonesia), VPNS Quang Trung (Vietnam), UMS Kin Sin Phyu (Myanmar) and patrol vessels HTMS Krabi (Thailand) and KDB Darulaman (Brunei). Penang will also host three key Asean naval events during the week in George Town and Batu Ferringhi – the 19th Asean Navy Chiefs' Meeting (ANCM), the third Asean Multilateral Naval Exercise (Amnex) and the Asean Fleet Review (AFR). ANCM working committee deputy chairman Rear Admiral Datuk Pahlawan Mohd Fadzli Kamal Mohd Mohaldin said Amnex's opening ceremony and 'Port Phase' today will enable officers to finalise plans for joint sea exercises. RMN is also hosting the Naval Engineering Conference on the same day, where regional naval engineers will share innovations under the theme 'Innovation and Technology Towards Improving Ship Survivability at Sea'. He said the ANCP was an RMN initiative to promote naval traditions to the public. 'Its hosting in Penang holds historical significance for RMN, recalling the International Royal Fleet Review in May 1990, which involved 59 warships and 11,000 naval personnel from around the world. 'Activities will include marching of Asean and local contingents, cultural performances, maritime asset salutes, RMN helicopter flypasts and more,' he said. On Tuesday, the ANCM will bring together navy chiefs from all Asean countries to discuss maritime security, peace and stability at Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort. Delegates will then attend the Asean Chief Navy Interaction Programme at Penang Hill on Wednesday, which includes a tree-planting ceremony and the launch of the Asean Harmony Grove to mark Asean navies' commitment to the Asean Green Initiative. The AFR on Thursday will see all participating warships sail in formation through the northern strait. Penang Governor Tun Ramli Ngah Talib is scheduled to attend as guest of honour. Malaysia assumed the role of Asean Chair this year with the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'.
