Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A senior teacher from a Zilla Parishad school in Yavatmal's Hiwara Sangam died after being struck by lightning while riding his motorcycle in the Malwada ghat area on Thursday.
An eyewitness had said the teacher was attending a phone call while riding the bike.
The incident occurred on the national highway connecting Mahur and Kinwat within the Mahur tehsil of Nanded district.
"The fatal lightning strike happened around 3pm during pre-monsoon showers that brought strong winds and intense lightning. The victim, identified as Sanjay Pandey, was on his way to his native village in Karanji.
He died on the spot," police said.
Local sources reported that people quickly gathered at the location following the incident. Eyewitnesses described a sudden and severe weather event characterised by heavy thunder that startled residents in the area.
Nanded district collector Dr Rahul Kardile said, "The report has been received from the gram sevak and after receiving the autopsy report a cheque of Rs 4 lakh will be given as compensation to the immediate kin of the victim."

Local residents speculate that the lightning may have been drawn to the teacher because he was reportedly using his mobile phone during the thunderstorm.
When contacted, the Nahur police said they were currently in the process of recording statements related to this claim.
In the wake of this tragic event, the Nanded district administration has issued an advisory urging the public to refrain from using cellphones during thunderstorms.
Maharashtra has recently experienced the onset of pre-monsoon rains, which have already caused considerable damage to agricultural activities. Amidst this, legislative council's deputy chairman Neelam Gorhe, during her visit to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Jalna districts on Friday, appealed for installation of lightning arresters in considerable numbers.
According to experts, using a cellphone during a thunderstorm isn't inherently dangerous, but it's often advised against because people might be more likely to be outside or near conductive objects while using their phone, increasing their risk of being struck.
However, landline phones can be risky during thunderstorms because the metal components in the phone and wiring can conduct electricity from a lightning strike.

Meghalaya honeymoon murder: Social media post from Raja Raghuvanshi's account confirmed cops' suspicions
GUWAHATI/SHILLONG: A honeymoon without a single photo. That was the first clue. Meghalaya Police SIT began suspecting foul play when they noticed newlyweds Raja & Sonam Raghuvanshi hadn't posted any pictures from their scenic trip to the northeast. That silence online opened the lid on what turned out to be a planned murder - a case codenamed unofficially by police as Operation Honeymoon. Raja Raghuvanshi, 28, a transporter from Indore, was found dead on June 2 in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills. He had disappeared on May 23 along with 24-year-old Sonam, who reappeared at a roadside dhaba in UP's Ghazipur in the early hours of June 9. She was arrested, brought to Shillong Tuesday, and will be produced before a court on Wednesday. On May 20, they reached Meghalaya. Three days later, both vanished. A rented scooter, abandoned near Shillong-Cherrapunji route, was found on May 24. It would take a nine-day search to locate Raja's body. A "dao" (machete) and phone lay nearby, with a blood-stained raincoat found a few km away. As SIT sifted through 42 surveillance videos and behaviour profiles, suspicions deepened. Footage placed Sonam meeting the alleged killers just 10km from the crime scene. The clincher came when a social media post appeared on Raja's account at 2.15am - hours after his death. Police said it was a red herring, likely posted by someone else to throw investigators off track. The conspiracy began well before the trip. Sonam, who returned to her parental home on May 15, allegedly resumed contact with her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha. Next day, Raj allegedly met three childhood friends - Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi - at a restaurant in Indore. The murder plan was allegedly sealed that evening. Raj stayed behind in Indore. The three boarded a train to Guwahati via Delhi and arrived in Shillong on May 21, police said. For the next two days, they allegedly tailed the couple with help from Sonam, who kept sending live locations. She is accused of luring Raja to secluded spots for photos, giving her co-conspirators the window they needed. Sonam's raincoat, handed to Akash, was found at crime scene.

'Local emergency': Mayor Karen Bass declares curfew in downtown LA amid anti-ICE protests; nearly 200 arrested
(AP photo) Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass on Tuesday declared a local emergency and imposed an overnight curfew in downtown Los Angeles as protests against federal immigration raids continued for a fifth straight day. The curfew will run from 8pm Tuesday to 6am Wednesday, covering a one-square-mile area bounded by the 5, 10, and 110 freeways. 'I have declared a local emergency and issued a curfew for downtown Los Angeles to stop the vandalism, to stop the looting,' Bass announced at an evening news conference. 'If you do not live or work in downtown LA, avoid the area. Law enforcement will arrest individuals who break the curfew and you will be prosecuted.' The order comes after days of unrest sparked by a series of immigration raids carried out by federal agents in the Westlake District, downtown, and South Los Angeles Since Friday, protesters have clashed with law enforcement, resulting in nearly 200 arrests, reported by CBS news. According to Bass, at least 23 businesses were looted Monday night. The curfew exempts residents, workers, credentialed media, and people experiencing homelessness, as confirmed by LAPD chief Jim McDonnell. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Endlich, spiele das beste Farm-Spiel 2025 gratis! ‘He mourned Raja like a brother': Mother sobs as police say Sonam Raghuvanshi's lover Raj Kushwaha son planned honeymoon murder; here's what he said
INDORE: "No, not our boy..." The family of Raj Kushwaha - the 21-year-old arrested for conspiring with Sonam Raghuvanshi and murdering her husband Raja on their honeymoon in Meghalaya - is struggling to believe he is capable of such a heinous crime. "He can never do something like this," insists his mother Chunni Bai, 52, wiping her damp eyes with her pallu for the umpteenth time. "Why, he cried for an hour after coming back from Raja's funeral, and said he'd have died if he had seen Raja's body," she told TOI on Tuesday. Police, however, say he planned Raja's murder with cold-blooded ruthlessness. And that he inserted himself into the grief of the two families when the couple was missing and at Raja's funeral where he was seen holding up Sonam's father. Raj worked in billing in Sonam's family business. Police say she and Raj had a relationship, which is why the two plotted to have Raja murdered by three of Raj's close friends. The Raj family can't believe any of this. For the last two days, they have stayed huddled inside their rented 200 sq ft room that is locked from outside. Every time a vehicle pulls up in front or a police siren is heard, Raj's 15-year-old sister faints, Chunni Bai says. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Raj's sister Suhani, 18, told TOI: "After the funeral, Raj was very tense about Sonam, worrying when she would be found. We were all anxious. Our younger sister even fasted praying for her well-being." Little did they know that soon after Sonam was found, Raj would be in handcuffs, accused of a crime that has shocked the nation. On Sunday, following the funeral, Raj left and never returned. When the family called him, he said he was at (co-accused) Vishal's house. And this his phone was switched off. Police would arrest him at Vishal's home. The family insists they barely knew Sonam. "We only met her once during a Garba when Raj took us. Many of his colleagues were present, including Sonam," said Suhani. Raj's family lives on the first floor of a modest two-storey house. The building, though old, is cared for, with a narrow staircase that creaks underfoot. The room is barely 10 ft by 20 ft, and it serves as the entire world for Raj, his mother, and his two sisters. A small slab in one corner is their kitchen, and a simple bed - Raj's bed - takes up most of the space. His sisters and mother sleep on the floor. Life had once been better for the family, when Raj's father Ramnazar owned a small fruit and vegetable shop. They had dreams of buying their own house, but then he had a brain tumour and died. His illness drained their resources, and they were forced to move into this small room, paying a monthly rent of Rs 3,500. Raj quit school in class 10 and found work in the local cloth market. "People know him as a kind boy," his mother says. "Once, he gave away his slippers to a barefoot vegetable vendor. Now, none of the neighbours talk to us. If someone stood by us, it'd be easier to bear this pain," said Suhani. The fact that his family doesn't believe he is capable of such violence only proves how cunning he is, say police. The circumstances, the evidence, Somam's calls to Raj from Meghalaya soon after his murder point at only one thing - that Raj has blood on his hands, investigators say.
