Teacher killed in lightning strike while riding bike

Time of India16-05-2025

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A senior teacher from a Zilla Parishad school in Yavatmal's Hiwara Sangam died after being struck by lightning while riding his motorcycle in the Malwada ghat area on Thursday.
An eyewitness had said the teacher was attending a phone call while riding the bike.
The incident occurred on the national highway connecting Mahur and Kinwat within the Mahur tehsil of Nanded district.
"The fatal lightning strike happened around 3pm during pre-monsoon showers that brought strong winds and intense lightning. The victim, identified as Sanjay Pandey, was on his way to his native village in Karanji.
He died on the spot," police said.
Local sources reported that people quickly gathered at the location following the incident. Eyewitnesses described a sudden and severe weather event characterised by heavy thunder that startled residents in the area.
Nanded district collector Dr Rahul Kardile said, "The report has been received from the gram sevak and after receiving the autopsy report a cheque of Rs 4 lakh will be given as compensation to the immediate kin of the victim."

Local residents speculate that the lightning may have been drawn to the teacher because he was reportedly using his mobile phone during the thunderstorm.
When contacted, the Nahur police said they were currently in the process of recording statements related to this claim.
In the wake of this tragic event, the Nanded district administration has issued an advisory urging the public to refrain from using cellphones during thunderstorms.
Maharashtra has recently experienced the onset of pre-monsoon rains, which have already caused considerable damage to agricultural activities. Amidst this, legislative council's deputy chairman Neelam Gorhe, during her visit to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Jalna districts on Friday, appealed for installation of lightning arresters in considerable numbers.
According to experts, using a cellphone during a thunderstorm isn't inherently dangerous, but it's often advised against because people might be more likely to be outside or near conductive objects while using their phone, increasing their risk of being struck.
However, landline phones can be risky during thunderstorms because the metal components in the phone and wiring can conduct electricity from a lightning strike.

HC orders action against 2 judges for letting accused go undefended in court

1 2 Kolkata: Calcutta High Court's Jalpaiguri circuit bench on Wednesday directed action against two judges — the chief judicial magistrate and the district and sessions judge (NDPS), Alipurduar — for not providing an advocate from legal aid to an accused in a drug case at the time of court production. Granting bail, Justice Krishna Rao held that the arresting officer violated Article 22 (1) of the Constitution by not informing the accused of the grounds for arrest. It is a fundamental right that an accused cannot be detained in custody without being informed of this. In ordering action against the two judicial officers, the court noted that a written complaint was made after the arrest on March 28, 2024, and after the initiation of the FIR, a case diary was started. The forwarding report submitted before the NDPS court was not served to the accused. At the time of production before the court on March 29, 2024, no advocate was provided and the court granted three days of police remand. After three days, the accused was produced before the NDPS court judge on April 1, 2024. He was taken into judicial custody, but the judge did not provide any advocate from legal aid to defend him. "This order be forwarded to the registrar general of the high court for information of the hon'ble Chief Justice and necessary action against the chief judicial magistrate and district and sessions judge (NDPS), Alipurduar for not offering an advocate from legal aid to the petitioner as at the time of production, the petitioner was undefended," the judge directed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo It was noted that even though it was mentioned in the written complaint, case diary and forwarding report that the grounds for arrest were explained, the state did not disclose any document or evidence proving the same. SIS, GIPE trades charges again as they fight over funds, bank account

The strained relations between the Servants of India Society (SIS) and its institute Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) is once again out in the open with both the bodies trading charges of wrongdoing against each other. While addressing the media in Pune on Thursday, Vishal Gaikwad, officiating deputy registrar of GIPE accused the SIS of freezing the bank accounts of the institute. On his part Damodar Sahoo, chairman of SIS, claimed that GPIE had unilaterally converted the jointly held bank account of the institute to a single-operated one which had prompted SIS to write the bank. Gaikwad said, as per University Grants Commission (UGC) norms, the sponsoring society does not have rights over the bank accounts of the institute. 'We learnt from the banks that our accounts were frozen. We managed to get them unfrozen but this is a gross violation of rules,' he claimed. Gaikwad said they have written to the Deccan Police to include the name of Sahoo in the ongoing case of allegedly fraudulently transferring Rs 1.42 crores from GIPE for the use of SIS. 'We have also written to the charity commissioner asking for the present board of SIS to be dismissed and appointment of a neural observer in its place,' he said. Relations between SIS and GIPE have soured since the last year with both the bodies trading charges against each other. GIPEs chancellor Sanjeev Sanyal had made serious allegations against Sahoo and others of misappropriating funds. Sanyal was swiftly removed from his position by Sahoo but was reinstated. Milind Deshmukh, the secretary of the SIS was arrested by the Deccan Police for his role in the multi-crore corruption scandal that had rocked the institute. Deshmukh was later removed from his position and is out on bail now. Sahoo on his part claimed that GIPE had unilaterally deviated from the convention of jointly operated accounts which had prompted the SIS to write to the bank. 'The GPIE had not intimated of the conversion of the account to single operated,' he said. Asked about the formation of an advisory committee which Gaikwad had termed as illegal, Sahoo said the committee was for better coordination between both the bodies.

Nagaland observes World Day against Child Labour with call to protect children's rights

Joint Labour Commissioner T Chubayanger cited growing reports of families — particularly in urban centres like Kohima — employing children under the pretext of 'mission work' or as domestic help, often subjecting them to neglect or abuse. The event, marked by awareness drives for leaders of colonies and wards, emphasised that despite progress, child labour persists in various forms across the state. Kohima, Jun 12 (PTI) Nagaland observed 'World Day Against Child Labour' on Thursday, with a call for all stakeholders — including government agencies, civil society, and the public — to intensify efforts in eliminating child labour and safeguarding children's rights. He reiterated that employing children below 14 years is illegal, carrying penalties of up to six months imprisonment and Rs 20,000 fine or both. Adolescents aged between 14 and 18 may be employed only under non-hazardous conditions, with limited working hours, he said, adding that violations can result in fines and imprisonment. 'If both husband and wife are working, they should employ an adult to look after their children instead of violating the rights of another child,' he said. Chubayanger said the Labour department, in coordination with other agencies, has initiated raid of establishments which include shops, commercial establishments, workshops, farms, restaurants, etc. The joint labour commissioner also announced that surprise inspections of homes where children are engaged as domestic helpers and schools targeting cases of children being consecutively absent for more than 15 days under the Right to Education Act would be launched soon. Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, B Henok Buchem, reaffirmed the district's commitment to penalise those employing children illegally. 'As a people known for our warrior heritage and Christian values, it is unacceptable that crimes against children are being normalised in our society,' he said. He called for collective responsibility and moral vigilance, urging society not to judge children based on their socio-economic background. Kohima District Child Protection Officer Sekho Dawhuo highlighted the role of the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) under the Mission Vatsalya programme. The DCPU is responsible for protecting vulnerable children — including those in need of care, children in conflict with the law, and children eligible for adoption, he said. The officer stressed the importance of community participation in identifying child labour and abuse, urging citizens to immediately report such cases to local police or dial the Child Helpline 1098, a 24×7 emergency outreach service. Dawhuo emphasised the role of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), a legal body constituted under the Juvenile Justice Act, empowered to ensure the rehabilitation and care of rescued children. He reminded the media to protect the identity of children involved in abuse or labour cases, as per Section 74 of the Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection) Act 2015. 'Violating this section by revealing any identifying details can result in imprisonment of up to six months or a fine of up to Rs 2 lakh,' he said.
