SIS, GIPE trades charges again as they fight over funds, bank account
The strained relations between the Servants of India Society (SIS) and its institute Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) is once again out in the open with both the bodies trading charges of wrongdoing against each other. While addressing the media in Pune on Thursday, Vishal Gaikwad, officiating deputy registrar of GIPE accused the SIS of freezing the bank accounts of the institute. On his part Damodar Sahoo, chairman of SIS, claimed that GPIE had unilaterally converted the jointly held bank account of the institute to a single-operated one which had prompted SIS to write the bank.
Gaikwad said, as per University Grants Commission (UGC) norms, the sponsoring society does not have rights over the bank accounts of the institute. 'We learnt from the banks that our accounts were frozen. We managed to get them unfrozen but this is a gross violation of rules,' he claimed. Gaikwad said they have written to the Deccan Police to include the name of Sahoo in the ongoing case of allegedly fraudulently transferring Rs 1.42 crores from GIPE for the use of SIS. 'We have also written to the charity commissioner asking for the present board of SIS to be dismissed and appointment of a neural observer in its place,' he said.
Relations between SIS and GIPE have soured since the last year with both the bodies trading charges against each other. GIPEs chancellor Sanjeev Sanyal had made serious allegations against Sahoo and others of misappropriating funds. Sanyal was swiftly removed from his position by Sahoo but was reinstated. Milind Deshmukh, the secretary of the SIS was arrested by the Deccan Police for his role in the multi-crore corruption scandal that had rocked the institute. Deshmukh was later removed from his position and is out on bail now.
Sahoo on his part claimed that GIPE had unilaterally deviated from the convention of jointly operated accounts which had prompted the SIS to write to the bank. 'The GPIE had not intimated of the conversion of the account to single operated,' he said. Asked about the formation of an advisory committee which Gaikwad had termed as illegal, Sahoo said the committee was for better coordination between both the bodies.

Hyderabad Zoo to set up Singapore-model tunnel-like aquarium
Hyderabad's Nehru Zoological Park, which boasts being the country's oldest and with the largest and most diverse animal collection, is gearing up for a new attraction – one of the largest aquariums akin to the famous one in Singapore. An underwater tunnel will take a visitor through the massive aquarium that will have the capacity to hold 3 million litres of water, showcasing diverse marine aquatic life, ranging from sharks to exotic fishes. Sources said the authorities are trying to reach out to marine aquarium specialist firms from Singapore and Australia for investment to build the grand, modern, and immersive tunnel-like aquarium on the one-acre land parcel identified behind the existing aquarium. The zoo authorities have received approval from the Zoo Board and the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) for the Rs 50-crore project. 'We are preparing a proposal for approval from the Central Zoo Authority. It will be worked out in a public-private partnership as zoos cannot afford the investment. We have a land and since it(aquarium) has a high potential for visitors, we thought of inviting investors on a revenue-sharing model,' Sunil S Hiremath told It all started a month ago as part of the master plan revision, he added. The zoo authorities have envisaged the project in such a way as to make it an educational and interactive experience for visitors through advanced augmented reality or virtual reality equipment. Currently, officials have studied the Aquatic Gallery in Science City, Ahmedabad (Gujarat), one of the largest in the country, for inspiration. 'The cost of the aquarium would depend on the investor and vendor. We are estimating about Rs 50 crore and hope to operationalise the new aquarium by the end of 2026. We may not become the largest in the country but we wish to offer a world-class experience. The plans are in a very nascent stage,' Hiremath added. Authorities said the nature of the aquarium will be decided based on educational, awareness, and entertainment purposes. For instance, aquariums act as a powerful educational tool by raising awareness on the impacts of increasing carbon emissions, sea pollution, water pollution, and declining aquatic species. 'For Nehru Zoo, our preliminary study shows that the optimum-sized aquarium will be an important addition to the modernisation programme currently undertaken. The research shows that the recently built India's largest modern aquarium in Gujarat Science City is running very successfully and has attracted around 10,00,000 visitors annually,' said a source. A modern aquarium would ideally feature an underwater tunnel aquarium exhibit – exhibiting marine water large and medium-sized exotic species, marine water smaller exhibits of various sizes, fresh water and brackish water exhibits, he added. Located in the older part of Hyderabad, the Nehru Zoological Park houses nearly 2,300 animals, and 194 bird species.

Pharma companies in South India, Gujarat transported over 1,200 kg cocaine to the national capital: Delhi Police chargesheet on Dubai-based cartel
The Delhi Police have said in their chargesheet that multiple pharma companies based in South India and Gujarat, including five legitimate and three shell, were used for transporting the 1,289 kg cocaine and 40 kg marijuana smuggled in by a Dubai-based cartel to the national capital last year. The chargesheet, running over 10,000 pages, was filed by the Delhi Police in the Patiala House court on Thursday. The chargesheet names 19 members allegedly linked to the cartel, 14 of whom have been arrested, including former Congressman Tushar Goyal, while five have been declared proclaimed offenders. The proclaimed offenders include Virender Basoya, the Dubai-based businessman funding the cartel operation, his son Rishab Basoya, 25, Ritik Bajaj, 36, Pramod, 50, and Vikas Rane, 49. 'Basoya's younger son, Rishab, was overseeing the coordination between Tushar Goel, Jassi, and their Mumbai customers. Vikas Rane was a customer from Mumbai who was set to arrive in Delhi to receive the Thai marijuana from Goyal and take it back to the city to distribute at rave parties. Pramod, an important henchman of Basoya, was overseeing the financial transactions,' a police officer said. On October 1, 562 kg of cocaine was seized in Mahipalpur, South Delhi. Then, on October 10, 208 kg of cocaine was seized from a shop in Ramesh Nagar, West Delhi. The third seizure was done on October 13, when Special Cell sleuths and the Gujarat Police recovered 518 kg of cocaine worth Rs 5,000 crore in the international market during a raid at a firm called Aavkar Drugs in Gujarat's Ankleshwar. Five people were arrested, including three of the company's listed directors – Ashwin Keshubhai Ramani, Brijesh Kothia, and Vijay Keshavlal Bhesania. Aavkar Drugs, which claims to manufacture chemical products on its website, was incorporated on September 23, 2016. The other two men arrested were Mayur, an employee of a fake company named Pharma Solutions Services, and middleman Amit Masuria, who allegedly aided the meeting between representatives of the two firms. During the October 1 raid, Delhi-based henchman Tushar Goyal was arrested along with three others. The Ramesh Nagar bust followed this. According to the Special Cell, 1,289 kg of cocaine and 40 kg of hydroponic Thai marijuana, worth Rs 13,000 crore, have been seized in this case so far. The police said it was all part of a consignment that the cartel operated by Basoya allegedly smuggled in. 'The drugs came to India at multiple locations from South America via Dubai. They were to arrive at Aavkar in multiple consignments by road to be refined and processed. Then they were transported as medicine packages of Pharma Solutions Services again via road to Delhi-NCR,' a police officer said. 'During the investigation, it was found that the drugs belonged to Pharma Solutions Services and came from Aavkar Drugs,' the officer added. 'Aavkar was involved with the Dubai cartel and Virender Basoya. Their communication channels are being investigated,' the officer said.
