TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan Launched in Ramnagar to Screen High-Risk Groups Across the District
The primary objective of the program is to identify and test individuals showing symptoms of tuberculosis (TB), particularly targeting high-risk groups. These include diabetic patients, individuals with high blood pressure, people above the age of 60, current TB patients, those with a past history of TB, and their family members.
As part of today's screening, chest X-rays were conducted for 12 individuals, and sputum tests were carried out for 30 people.
This campaign is being implemented across the entire district.
Key officials who participated in the program include TB Program Officer Dr. Raju, Dr. Madhurya, Dr. Priyanka, Deputy DMO Madhusudhan Reddy, along with local health staff.
The health department emphasized that early detection and treatment are vital to achieving a TB-free society and encouraged people from all high-risk categories to get tested.

Maharashtra Health Department integrates TB screening into medical college family adoption programmes
In a bid to tackle the challenge of delays in identifying persons with presumptive Tuberculosis (PwTB), the Maharashtra health department has asked medical colleges to incorporate Active Case Finding (ACF) activities into the Family Adoption Programme (FAP) of medical colleges. Active Case Finding (ACF) is one of the strategies used by the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) to detect missing PwTB. Dr. Sandeep Sangale, Joint Director of Maharashtra State Health Services (TB and Leprosy) department, issued a notice directing colleges and universities to integrate TB screening activities into the FAP, asking that reports of collected data be sent to respective District TB officers for further integration into the NTEP. The move comes after Bharati Vidyapeeth Medical College in Maharashtra's Pune and the District TB Unit ran a pilot programme in rural Pune villages, integrating ACF activities, including community screening for TB through door-to-door visits. The team, including Swathi Njarekkattuvalappil, Saibal Adhya, and Sanjivani Patil from Bharati Vidyapeeth Medical College and Sanjay Darade from Pune District TB centre, wrote a proposal to the State Health Department for ACF integration. According to the proposal, Maharashtra state has around 80 medical colleges (government and private/deemed) with a yearly intake of an average of 150 students each, with each student allotted 5 households for follow-up over the next 3 years under FAP. With this integration of TB care with FAP, students can screen a cohort of 60,000 households (approximately 2,40,000 individuals) across the state each year and continue their follow-up for at least the next 3 years. 'The pilot programme was about providing hands-on experience to detect presumptive TB in individuals for early-stage treatment. This was more about training MBBS students to ask the right questions and detect symptoms for further diagnosis,' said Ms. Njarekkattuvalappil. The pilot programme was implemented in September last year, with five batches of 30–35 MBBS students each working in four villages, including Bhukum and Ambarwet grampanchayats of Pune's Paud, where active case finding was conducted. At least 959 individuals were screened, with 10 identified as having presumptive TB. The authors selected Paud because it reported 1,057 cases of TB (13% of total notified cases from Pune Rural) in 2022, the second highest among the 14 TUs constituting Pune rural district. Maharashtra is among the leading contributors to the country's TB burden; it reported about 2.34 lakh cases in 2022, about 10% of total notified cases in India. Almost 64% of the symptomatic population in India do not seek healthcare, mainly due to ignoring symptoms and lack of awareness. Speaking to The Hindu, Ms. Njarekkattuvalappil said, 'Now that the government has issued a notice for integration, we will be holding meetings next week with medical deans, directors and district medical officers to explain the process and share all important aspects of the study, including the questionnaire.'

Himachal govt has taken strict action against drug abuse: Health minister

Health and family welfare, social justice and empowerment minister Dr (Col) Dhani Ram Shandil (File) During the programme, he administered the oath to 96 National Service Scheme Volunteers, National Cadet Corps and Scouts & Guides from Government Degree College Kotshhera, 20 students from Government Degree College Sanjauli, 13 students from Himachal Pradesh University's Department of Social Works, along with secretariat officials, members of Gyan-Vigyan Samiti, office-bearers of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan and officials of the social justice and empowerment department, to make their district, state and country drug-free. The Drug-Free India Campaign was launched by the Government of India five years ago to spread awareness about the harmful effects of drugs and has played a significant role in building a drug-free society. Last year over 5.75 lakh people were made aware of the dangers of drugs under the National Drug Prevention Campaign in the state. Awareness activities were carried out in 5,660 villages and 4,332 educational institutions, targeting adolescents, youth, women and the general public. Shandil said, 'State government has taken strict action against drugs. Two bills have been passed recently in the Assembly against drug abuse and related crime. These bills include provisions for death penalty, life imprisonment, fines up to ₹10 lakh, confiscation of property, rehabilitation, preventive education and livelihood support. Under the PIT NDPS Act, Himachal Pradesh Police has seized illegal property worth ₹42 crore, identified the property of 70 traffickers and detained 44 notorious drug peddlers.' The campaign is being actively run at the panchayat level to identify smugglers and consumers. A special task force has been formed to focus on anti-drug operations and 13 police stations have been notified for the same. Dr Shandil said that a 100-bed, fully equipped, modern de-addiction centre would be set up at Kotla Barog in district Sirmaur, with ₹5.34 crore already approved. The Directorate of ESOMSA is working with NITI Aayog, the National Dependence Treatment Centre at AIIMS Delhi and PGI Chandigarh to prepare a detailed state action plan for drug prevention. He said that de-addiction and rehabilitation centres are already operational in the state - four for men in Kullu, Una, Hamirpur and Kangra districts, and one for women run by the Red Cross Society in district Kullu.

Philippines accelerates TB elimination drive with India's community-based screening devices
New Delhi: The Philippines, one of the top five countries with the highest tuberculosis (TB) burden, faces the challenge of detecting and treating an estimated 1,90,000 missed TB cases each year, an official statement said. In line with the United Nations target to find and treat 2.1 million Tuberculosis cases in the country by 2027, the Philippines' Health Department is stepping up its commitment to strengthen community-level screening and diagnosis through India-made innovative Truenat® systems and ultra-portable X-ray devices. Currently, there are 68 Truenat® devices deployed across the Philippines, enabling rapid, multi-disease molecular testing for TB, HIV, HPV, Hepatitis B & C, and more. A pilot in the Bantayan Islands demonstrated the transformative potential of the platform, achieving a remarkable 1008% increase in TB case detection, as per the statement. Molbio's WHO-endorsed and ICMR-approved solutions for TB detection address critical barriers in the Philippines, such as geographic isolation, underutilization of laboratory testing, and limited access in rural and island communities. The recent approval of the PRORAD Atlas Ultraportable X-ray by the Philippines FDA paves the way for integrated, end-to-end TB screening and diagnosis, ensuring immediate linkage to treatment. Health Secretary of the Philippines Theodore J Herbosa said, "As we intensify our efforts to combat tuberculosis (TB) in the Philippines, the collaboration with India stands as a beacon of innovation and partnership. The integration of India's indigenous diagnostic technologies, such as the Truenat® system, into our healthcare infrastructure is pivotal. Truenat®, known for its rapid and reliable molecular diagnostic capabilities, allows for swift and accurate TB screenings, enhancing our capacity to manage and eventually eliminate TB within our borders, especially in remote areas." "This collaboration is part of a broader strengthening bilateral relationship between India and the Philippines, which now exceeds USD 3 billion in trade. India is a key supplier of pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, and diagnostic technologies, contributing significantly to our healthcare advancements.
