Police sergeant killed in motorcycle crash on NSE near Kuala Kangsar
IPOH, June 7 — A police sergeant was killed while on his way home to Kedah after the motorcycle he was riding skidded at Kilometre 253.7 of the North-South Expressway (NSE) northbound near Kuala Kangsar yesterday.
Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said in the incident at about 7.24 pm, the victim Shamsul Ishak, 58, who was attached to the Special Branch of the Kedah contingent police headquarters sustained injuries to his left rib area.
'Further investigations found that when the victim reached the location of the incident, he was believed to have lost control (of the motorcycle) and veered off, crashing into the metal road divider, causing him to be thrown off. The victim, who was severely injured, was taken by ambulance to Taiping Hospital for further treatment.
'However, he was pronounced dead at around 9.24 pm in the hospital's emergency ward,' he said.
He also said the victim was believed to have been on holiday and making his way back home to Alor Setar, Kedah after meeting with his friends across the state.
He added that further investigations are still ongoing and the case is now being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. — Bernama

KLANG, June 7 — All victims involved in the capsized boat incident in the waters off Tanjung Harapan here yesterday were believed not to be wearing life jackets. Meanwhile, he said police had recorded statements from three individuals, including one survivor. 'The actual cause of the incident has yet to be determined, and the case is being investigated under Section 280 of the Penal Code,' he said. In the incident at about 5 pm, three individuals including a child died, one survived (Alvin Chang Yan Qin, 17), while a married couple remains missing. The deceased victims were Darren Gan, 3; Cheu Son Hin, 50; and Fong Yong Sen, 29, while those still missing have been identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. — Bernama

Kelantan police: Man drowns after being swept away by strong currents in Dabong
KOTA BHARU, June 7 — A man who went missing while bathing in Sungai Kenerong, Dabong here today was found dead at about 4.13 pm. Kuala Krai district police chief Supt Mazlan Mamat said the man, 47, was swept away by currents when he went to check on the depth of the river before bathing with nine of his friends. 'The victim had went out from Kampung Dabong with his friends to bathe in the river at about 12.30 pm. The victim had gone ahead to check on the water depth but was swept away by currents and went missing,' he said in a statement today, adding that the body has been sent to Sultan Ismail Petra Hospital forensics unit, Kuala Krai for autopsy. Meanwhile, Senior Fire Officer II Zaid Ibrahim said the search operation for the victim began at 2.15 pm with 10 firefighters and three police personnel. 'After two hours, rescuers found the victim near where he fell and was lodged between rocks at a depth of 3.7 metres,' he said. — Bernama

‘Tan Sri' in highway probe discharged, to be quizzed by MACC
MACC chief Azam Baki said anti-corruption officers would seek to set a date for taking the Tan Sri's statement. PETALING JAYA : A corporate figure at the centre of a corruption probe into the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds for a Klang Valley highway project will be summoned soon by graft busters. Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief Azam Baki said the 'Tan Sri' was discharged from hospital today after undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness. 'I have been made to understand that the doctors have just allowed him to be discharged. My officers will be in touch with him as soon as possible to set a date to take his statement,' he said, according to Astro Awani. Azam added that the Tan Sri was the main suspect in the probe, while other witnesses were still giving their statements. He previously said that hundreds of millions in sukuk funds were suspected to have been channelled to a company owned by the corporate figure, and later misused for personal interests rather than the intended highway project. The funds were allegedly transferred to multiple entities, including proxy companies and the personal account of the Tan Sri's wife, and used to acquire real estate, luxury vehicles and goods, as well as fund gambling activities. MACC has seized individual bank accounts totalling RM4.5 million, eight company accounts totalling RM33 million, a luxury condominium and a plot of land valued at RM24.5 million, as well as nine vehicles valued at RM7.6 million in its probe. The anti-graft agency had also seized luxury watches valued at about RM25 million, designer handbags valued at RM3 million, jewellery and diamonds worth RM6 million, four horses valued at RM400,000, and premium alcoholic beverages worth RM3 million.
