Canada bully Wallaroos in World Cup reality check
World number two Canada dominated every aspect of Friday afternoon's clash, only the second time Australia's women have graced Suncorp Stadium.
Down 21-0 after 20 minutes, the hosts were lucky not to concede more than one extra try before the break, although there was a response to begin the second stanza.
A strong tackle-busting effort from winger Desiree Miller to score was brief respite though in a dominant Canadian performance.
Australia, ranked sixth in the world, beat world number eight USA last weekend after a comprehensive loss to number three New Zealand to begin the Pacific Four Series.
Canada drew with New Zealand last week and will enter August's World Cup in England, where the hosts top the rankings, confident of bringing the trophy back with them.
In seven World Cups, Australia have a sole third-placed finish and otherwise finished no higher than fifth.
"Would have loved the win last weekend but had to move on quickly," Canadian captain Alex Tessier said.
"Very proud; a decent win and put a lot of points on the board.
"The Pac Four plays a huge role (for the World Cup) … which is coming up quite quickly."
The visitor's forward pack was rampaging in the first half, Australia unable to plug the gaps in defence and hesitant with ball in hand while their line-out struggled to function.
Sevens convert Charlotte Caslick had her moments in her first Test at inside centre, making a strong covering tackle to save a try and darting through the line whenever the opportunity presented.
The Wallaroos' replacement forwards also made an impact, reserve hooker Adiana Talakai unlucky to have a try disallowed after her injection after half-time.
Australia captain and back-rower Siokapesi Palu was another bright spot for the side but admitted her team had work to do with three Tests left before their World Cup opener.
"Canada were really physical, and set piece again was challenging," she said.
"We know they're a quality side and we really need to step up moving forward."

Fowler's return is still likely months away but it is a promising sign for Matildas fans, with the forward racing the clock to make Australia's Asian Cup campaign in March 2026. And the positive updates comes after Australian boss Joe Montemurro revealed her recovery is going better than expected. 'I spoke to her the other day and she's on track,' Montemurro said last month. 'She's in Sydney at the moment doing some running. 'She's looking good, and she should be hopefully back playing before November.' Fowler has only recently headed back to Europe after spending several weeks Down Under with her rugby league superstar boyfriend, Nathan Cleary and her family. The Matildas star was spotted cheering Cleary on at games, hand-in-hand with him at Panthers HQ and out with the halfback as they took several strolls around the beaches.

Australian and Queensland governments sign agreement to fund Brisbane Olympics infrastructure
The Commonwealth has agreed to contribute just under half the cost of building the 2032 Olympic Games venues, under a deal struck with the Queensland government. The federal government will provide no more than $3.43bn towards the building of 17 new and upgraded venues for the Games, with the infrastructure expected to cost $7.1bn in total. A significant proportion of that contribution will be spent on the new 63,000-seat stadium at Victoria Park and 25,000-seat National Aquatic Centre in Spring Hill. The Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) gives the Commonwealth seats on the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee Board and is contingent on the state government developing a plan for Victoria Park which has a "focus on improving access to green space." "We can guarantee you that every part of Victoria Park that's not stadium will be green space," Queensland Minister for Sport Tim Mander said. The Queensland government has also agreed to involve its federal counterparts in naming the Victoria Park stadium and will establish a plaque at the venue acknowledging Commonwealth support. It has long been International Olympic Committee policy that brand names be kept off venues used for the Games. However, the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games organisers recently announced they were breaking with that policy and allowing companies to sponsor stadiums and arenas. The chair of the LA Games, Casey Wasserman, said the many millions of dollars these sponsorship deals bring in is essential for an Olympic Games which doesn't have a government as its primary funding source. The IGA for the Brisbane 2032 Games also prevents the state government from selling or offering long-term leases on Olympic venues for 25 years, unless the federal government agrees to it. If they are sold or leased in future, the federal government will be entitled to a cut. Mr Mander said the Queensland government was required to demonstrate to the Commonwealth that the venues will be built on time and on budget, and represent a good use of taxpayer funds, before the funding deal could be reached. He said the IGA is an endorsement of that plan, and demonstrates a spirit of cooperation which will help make the games a success. In total, 37 venues across 11 Queensland cities will be used to host the 28 Olympic and 22 Paralympic sports. However, which sports will be included in the games won't be determined until an IOC meeting next year, leaving Brisbane 2032 organisers having to create a venue plan without knowing exactly which sports they need to cater for. "Of course, some of them will be bleedingly obvious, where they will be. There will be others that will need to be worked out," Mr Mander said. New sports can be added to each Olympic Games, on top of the 'core' events. At LA 2028 there will be six additional sports: cricket, baseball, flag football, lacrosse, squash and softball. Mr Mander said he didn't expect to be adding as many as that to the Brisbane 2032 schedule. "It is important to know that any additional sports, outside the 28 core sports, those costs have to be born by the host."

Sydney FC forced to plan for potential exit of Brazilian star Douglas Costa
Sydney FC has started planning for life without Douglas Costa, with fears growing that the former Juventus and Bayern Munich star won't return for the upcoming A-League season. Costa remains in his home country of Brazil for personal reasons, and while Sydney officials are remaining patient with the 34-year-old winger, they need the issue resolved so they have time to find a replacement, if needed, before the transfer window closes next month. While the Sky Blues remain hopeful Costa returns, the club's other Brazilian import, midfielder Leo Sena, is set to be cut loose by the club. Sydney's head of player management Alex Baumjohannn on Monday told club supporters at a fan forum that Sena was no longer part of the Sky Blues' plans despite having a season to run on his contract. Sky Blues coach Ufuk Talay on Wednesday said Sena, 29, was 'mentally and physically not in the place we want him to be'. 'Personal issues that he's had off the field has definitely hindered his physical side of the game, so it's disappointing in that sense because we still believe he's a quality player that definitely adds value to our team, but we'll see how things pan out in the next couple of weeks with him,' Talay said. 'He's still part of the group, he's still here with the team, but moving forward we'll see how that pans out.' As for Costa, Talay said the club had no choice but to be prepared for the potential non-return of its marquee man. 'We want Douglas back. He's dying to get back,' the Sydney mentor said. 'There's no definite timeline, but for us, at the same time, we're thinking ahead. If things don't go to plan, we don't need to be sitting on our hands. 'We're hoping that we can get him here as soon as possible, but in the background, there is some work being done, so if it doesn't plan out the way we want it to be, we'll have to move forward in another direction. 'We're very wary as a team and as a club that the transfer window is closing pretty soon, and we need to make sure that we're not left in the lurch without getting a player across the line.' Costa and former Manchester United star Juan Mata were the A-League's two prized recruits ahead of the 2024-2025 season. However, there's now a chance that neither will be part of the competition going forward, with Spanish veteran Mata yet to decide if he will re-sign with Western Sydney Wanderers, where he received little game time last season under coach Alen Stajcic. Mata, 37, has also been linked with a move to Central Coast; however, the Mariners have been reluctant to sign new players due to financial constraints. While the Gosford-based club last week announced the signing of former Socceroos goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne, it's understood the Mariners had to go through with the acquisition of the ex-Sky Blues gloveman after intervention from Professional Footballers Australia because the veteran custodian signed a contract with Central Coast for the new season in March.
