Canada's Messing announces return to competition, eyes 2026 Olympics

Reutersa day ago
Aug 19 (Reuters) - Two-time national men's champion Keegan Messing announced his return to competitive figure skating on Tuesday with hopes of securing a spot on the Canadian team for the 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympics.
The 33-year-old Messing, a five-times national medallist, represented Canada at the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang (2018) and Beijing (2022) and had announced his retirement in May 2023.
Messing said it was his continued participation in professional shows that renewed his desire to compete.
"During the Stars On Ice tour I realized I was skating at a high level again and that sparked my decision to return," Messing said in a Skate Canada press release.
"I've put in the work, regained my jumps, and rediscovered the fire within myself to train. My focus now is to be stronger than when I retired and to secure a spot on the Olympic team."
Prior to the Beijing Olympics, Messing was forced into quarantine due to a positive COVID-19 test after having been negative days before.
After receiving a negative COVID-19 test result and being cleared to travel, Messing went on to place ninth in the men's short programme at Beijing a day after arriving in China. He eventually finished 11th overall.

Jake Paul's next fight against pound-for-pound star on Netflix is revealed after talks with Anthony Joshua broke down

Jake Paul will take on Gervonta 'Tank' Davis on November 15th in an exhibition live on Netflix. The Youtuber-turned-boxer had been in talks over a possible showdown with Anthony Joshua but that has not materialised. Instead, Paul will be facing a smaller opponent in the 5ft 5in American on November 14. 'Tank' has never been defeated as a professional and has held the WBA lightweight title since 2003. The 30-year-old will be giving up a significant height and weight advantage against 6ft 1in Paul. Paul responded to confirmation of the fight on X by writing: 'Gervonta has been disrespecting my name for too long. 'His nickname might be Tank, but I'm an FPV drone and I'm about to disable tiny boy. Yes, he's 1 of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the world, but my motto is anyone, anytime, anyplace, against all odds. The 5ft 5in Gervonta Davis will be the opponent for Paul, who stands at 6ft 1in 'And I like my odds. First, I am going to kill David, then I will go on to slaughter Goliath.' Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) and Netflix announced the fight, which will take place at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Davis may be small of stature but packs a punch having knocked out twenty eight of his thirty one opponents to date. He is a controversial character, previously accused of domestic violence in 2023 by Vanessa Posso, who is the mother of Davis' daughter. Posso has since publicly withdrawn her abuse allegations. In July, he was arrested again on a domestic violence charge. As seen in jail records obtained by Daily Mail, Davis is now facing a battery charge after being arrested in the early hours of Friday, June 15 in Miami Beach, Florida. In his latest defense Davis retained the WBA lightweight title via a controversial majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr. Prior to that result, he was No 8 in the pound-for-pound list and among the very best boxers in the world. His fight with Paul will not place that belt on the line and is purely an exhibition, following on from Paul's clash with Mike Tyson in November 2024. It remains to be seen whether the AJ fight will still materialise next year, though it appears Paul is confident. His reference to going on to 'slaughter Goliath' seems to clearly reference his intention to face the Brit, which would no doubt be his biggest and most dangerous challenge.

Luke Donald's Ryder Cup master plan: chartered planes and sleepovers

It is no coincidence that Rory McIlroy has called winning an away Ryder Cup match 'golf's new Everest' and that captain Luke Donald has planned a preparatory mission employing the same fundamentals as those expeditions taking on the most demanding climb of all. 'Reconnaissance and acclimatisation' are listed as the basic requirements for the scale and so the blue and gold brigade will head out for a whole week of groundwork before the biennial tussle in New York next month, determined to not only be fully briefed on the challenge that awaits but also to be completely refreshed. Of course, it has become a staple for Ryder Cup captains to lead their men on fact-finding missions ahead of the big showdown. Yet never before have a visiting side undertaken their two-day inspection behind enemy lines so close to the start of hostilities. Donald has revealed that a plane has been chartered to fly from London on the evening of Sunday, 15 September, immediately after the BMW PGA Championship has concluded and has let it be known that he wants his 12 golfers to stay on in the country until they assemble at the New York team hotel on Monday, September 23. There will be no excuses for being ring-rusty – as the Americans were two years ago – no accusations of being underprepared and certainly no chance of using the time difference as a reason for any shortfall. 'For me, it would be ideal to stay in the United States rather than go back and forth and deal with jet-lag,' Donald said at the British Masters on Wednesday. 'The plan is nine holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday and then I think we will see the groups hanging out together. 'Some of the players live over there and will want to go back to their homes but there will definitely be a chance for some of them to hang out for a two-week period. We have plans in place for where they will stay.' With qualification concluding at the Belfry this week, and Donald naming his wildcards on September 1, the definitive dozen is still be decided, but it is expected that about a third of the team will not have a fixed US abode, including Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, Bob MacIntyre and Rasmus Hojgaard. There is the possibility that the likes of Rory McIlroy will put up close friends such as Rose and Fleetwood, although as Donald, himself a neighbour of McIlroy's, explained it is uncomfortably warm and humid in Florida at this time of the year and they may embark on golf trips elsewhere in the US. Whatever comes to pass, Donald must be confident of what this plan will do for team unity as they attempt to become only the second team in nine matches to prevail on foreign soil. Although, as Matt Fitzpatrick pointed out, the probability of there being the same 12 faces in the Europe team room as two years ago will help to further cement the camaraderie. 'In that sense, I would say that would be a very good thing,' Fitzpatrick said.
