UAE Emirates ID biometric tech to use your face as your ID: What you need to know
Abu Dhabi: The UAE has announced plans to phase out the use of physical Emirates ID cards, unveiling a new biometric identification system that uses facial recognition technology to identify residents.
Here's an explainer on how the ambitious project will work – and what it means for you.
What is the UAE doing with Emirates ID cards?
The UAE is introducing advanced biometric systems using facial recognition, which could soon eliminate the need to carry a physical Emirates ID. This tech is already successfully tested and is expected to fully roll out across sectors within the next year.
Who is behind this project?
The initiative comes from the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), working with strategic tech partners.
Who made the announcement?
The announcement was made in a written response to the Federal National Council (FNC), addressing a question from Dr Adnan Hamad Al Hammadi, a member of the Council, about the promotion and implementation of electronic identity solutions to enhance service efficiency.
How does it work?
Your face is your new ID. These systems use artificial intelligence (AI) and facial recognition to verify your identity through the ICP's smart app. That means secure, instant identification – without needing to show your physical card.
Where will it be used?
The biometric ID is set to be used across sectors where security and ID checks are vital, including government services, banks, telecom providers, healthcare, hospitality, insurance etc.
Is this system safe and private?
Yes, the ICP has confirmed that the system follows strict national data protection laws and risk management protocols, ensuring your personal data is secure.
Why is the UAE making this change?
It is all part of the country's digital transformation strategy – reducing paperwork, streamlining services, and enhancing convenience for residents and visitors alike.
What is the timeline?
The transition is already underway, starting with basic services. More complex processes are being added in phases, with full rollout targeted within the next year.
What about the Emirates ID card – is it gone for good?
Not immediately. While the biometric system is designed to complement the Emirates ID card and eventually replace the physical card. Both systems may run in parallel during the transition.

emirates, Etihad among safest airlines: report
15 June 2025 15:03 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)UAE airlines are among the safest in the world, according to a new report, with Emirates and Etihad soaring into the top-five list while flyDubai and Air Arabia make their presence felt in the low-cost survey by for 2025 puts Emirates in third place alongside Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific. Etihad is two places behind at No.5. Air New Zealand and Qantas bag the first two is the safest low-cost carrier in the Middle East, coming in at No.11 in the category, and Air Arabia is not too far behind at 18 in the list led by HK Express and Jetstar Group. On the third place which Emirates shared with Qatar and Cathay, CEO Sharon Petersen, said: 'The three-way tie for third place was because we simply could not separate these airlines. From fleet age to pilot skill, safety practices, fleet size, and number of incidents, their scores were identical.'She added that it was it was 'extremely close again between Air New Zealand and Qantas for first place with only 1.50 points separating the two airlines. Whilst both airlines uphold the highest safety standards and pilot training, Air New Zealand continues to have a younger fleet than Qantas which separates the two.'What came as a surprise was the absence of Singapore Airlines and KLM on the list. Petersen clarified in a statement that while these airlines remain exceptionally safe and retain their seven-star safety rating, they just narrowly missed out on a spot this year due to incidents that following criteria were used to determine the winners: serious incidents over the past two years; fleet age; fleet size; rate of incidents; fatalities; profitability; IOSA certification; ICAO country audit pass and pilot skill and report comes amid passengers concerns about aviation safety following the Air India crash in Ahmedabad that claimed 270 lives last Thursday. The Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation has formed a high-level, multi-disciplinary panel to investigate the cause of the accident. The panel's mandate extends beyond identifying the cause—it will also evaluate current Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), maintenance practices, and the broader regulatory environment. A recent airline safety study revealed that between 2018 and 2022, the global death risk per flight boarding was approximately one in 13.7 million. In comparison, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated 1.19 million fatalities from road accidents in 2023, equating to more than two deaths per minute. Source: Aletihad - Abu Dhabi
