Heading overseas for university? Here's what Emirati students need to know about UAE's higher education standards

16 July 2025 01:12 MAYS IBRAHIM (ABU DHABI)To elevate the quality of higher education and better align academic outcomes with national goals, the UAE Government has a robust framework in place for Emirati students wishing to pursue studies abroad. Decision No. (5) of 2025, issued by the Education, Human Development and Community Development Council (EHCD), has introduced a defined set of standards for academic institutions and programmes. The decision, already in effect, governs the enrollment of UAE nationals in diploma, bachelor's, master's, doctorate, and equivalent degree programmes at international universities. Why These Criteria Matter The framework was established not only to protect students and their families from investing in non-accredited or low-ranked institutions, but also to align international education with the UAE's economic goals and future skill setting clear thresholds for university rankings, the EHCD seeks to empower students to make informed decisions and avoid the risk of their qualifications being rejected for purposes such as government employment, promotion, or scholarship Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR) is the central authority students must consult before enrolling abroad, with formal procedures in place to verify whether a university or academic programme meets official standards. What Are the Criteria? All Emirati students, whether self-funded or supported by government scholarships, must ensure that the chosen institution meets the ministry's approved global ranking requirements. The institution must be ranked among the top 50 universities worldwide in the intended field of study. If studying in the US or Australia, the institution must rank in the top 100 in the chosen field and top 100 studying in any other English-speaking country, the university must fall within the top 200 globally, both in the specific academic field and overall. In non-English-speaking countries, the institution must be ranked among the top 300 in the field and to meet these standards may result in non-recognition of the qualification, jeopardising employment, further studies, and professional entitlements in the UAE. How Students Can Check Their OptionsMoHESR offers a free service to support students in navigating these academic criteria. Students can access these services by navigating to the 'Information Service about Academic Programmes Abroad for UAE Nationals' page on the ministry's official website, clicking 'Start New Application', then selecting 'Inquiry About Academic Programme'. Lastly, they need to enter the details of the university and academic programme they wish to enquire about. After uploading necessary documents (such as Emirates ID and passport copy) through the digital portal, students will receive an official response within 1–5 business days confirming the accreditation status. Enquiries and exemption requests can be addressed to

UAE to supply desalinated water to Gaza through new pipeline

The UAE has announced the launch of a new project to supply desalinated water to the southern Gaza Strip through a new pipeline. Under the project, water will be delivered from the Egyptian border, state news agency Wam reported. The pipeline, 6.7km long and 315mm wide, will link the desalination plant built by the Emirates on the Egyptian side to displaced Palestinians between Khan Younis and Rafah. The project, part of the Gallant Knight 3 campaign, aims to serve 600,000 affected Gaza residents, providing 15 litres of desalinated water per person each day. Urgent need More than 80 per cent of water facilities in Gaza have been destroyed, leaving many within the enclave struggling to fight dehydration on a daily basis. 'The new water pipeline project is not merely an emergency response to the water crisis in Gaza, but rather an extension of the UAE's consistent approach to supporting the Palestinian people, especially in light of the catastrophic circumstances caused by the war,' said Sharif Al Nairab, media official for Operation Gallant Knight 3. 'The UAE has been and continues to be the primary supporter of Gaza across various sectors, from the construction of desalination plants to the provision of water tankers, well drilling and network maintenance, all the way to this vital project that seeks to secure drinking water for the most affected areas.' This project is the latest in a series of initiatives launched by the UAE to address the collapse of infrastructure, particularly water resources, in the enclave. It comes as displaced Palestinians in 18 areas of Gaza are being forced to move again as the Israeli army announced eviction orders "for their safety" on Tuesday. Israel's war on the enclave has killed at least 58,479 Palestinians and injured 139,355 since October 7, 2023, Gaza's Health Ministry said. Unicef has warned of a 'man-made drought' as so much of the territory's drinking water system was dysfunctional.

The once-maligned Airbus A380 is here to stay — and Emirates' $180 million deal proves it

Emirates ' iconic double-decker jets are only growing more important for the Dubai-based airline. While many airlines have retired some of their Airbus A380 s since the pandemic, Emirates has just bought some more. Doric Nimrod Air Three Limited, a Guernsey-based lessor, announced last Friday that it had agreed to sell Emirates four Airbus A380s in a $180 million deal. Emirates had already been leasing these planes for the past 12 years, but this commitment is a signal of further confidence in the type. No airline can buy brand-new A380s because Airbus ended production in 2021 after 18 years of the superjumbo. Emirates' hub-and-spoke route model sees it fly over 50 million passengers a year, with many transiting through its Dubai base to reach other destinations. This relies on huge planes with a large capacity, like the A380, to efficiently transport people on the most popular routes, such as London to Dubai. Emirates President Tim Clark previously told Business Insider it is "probably the most profitable asset we've got." Emirates is by far the biggest operator of the type. According to data from Ch-aviation, it owns 118 Airbus A380s — about 60% of all those operated by airlines. The airline will take ownership of the four A380s between August and November, said Doric Nimrod Air Three Limited. Plus, the enormous planes look set for an upgrade. Executive Traveller reported that at last month's annual general meeting for the International Air Transport Association, Clark said an all-new first-class suite is coming to the A380. "In fact, I've got another design of first class coming up, which is on the drawing board," he reportedly said. "Like a hotel, you've got to keep at it, and we'll change out the products." The capacious jet is known for hosting a range of luxuries, such as onboard bars and showers on Emirates. Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has a $24,000 three-room suite available on its superjumbos — with a bedroom, shower, and living room, called " The Residence." However, operating an A380 is expensive because it has four engines, which use huge amounts of fuel. This has prompted carriers such as Air France, Thai Airways, and Malaysia Airlines to ditch the A380 during or soon after the pandemic. Although Emirates plans to continue flying its A380s through to the late 2030s. Clark previously told BI that he would like to see Airbus make a new version of the A380. He added that a modernized version, with new materials and Rolls-Royce engines, could be up to 25% more fuel efficient. The "compelling nature" of a four-engine plane remains "quite clear to many, many people," he said.

Emirates buys four Airbus A380s it leased from Nimrod Air Three for $180mn

Dubai's Emirates has purchased four Airbus A380-861 aircraft that it has been leasing from Doric Nimrod Air Three Limited, a Guernsey-domiciled investment company. Nimrod Air Three informed the London Stock Exchange's Main Market that all four aircraft were leased for the past 12 years to Emirates, and it has now reached an agreement to sell its four assets in a deal worth US$180 million. This includes US$25 million for the purchase of the title, and US$20 million for the buyout of the return conditions. Emirates is the largest operator of the A380s in the world, with 116 aircraft in service. This is nearly 46 per cent of the 254 A380s built by Airbus. Last year, it had purchased five Airbus A380s from Doric Nimrod Air Two for US$200 million, following a purchase of two other A380s for US$35 million each from the same company earlier. In a statement, Nimrod Air Three said it plans to liquidate following the sale of the aircraft to Emirates. It is anticipated that the process for liquidation will commence as soon as possible thereafter. It will make further announcements detailing final distribution amounts and timetable in due course.
