Talkin' Up the Port: Focusing on the good things in Newport

Yahoo2 days ago
NOW where was I?
It is more than eight years since I last wrote a regular opinion column for the Argus.
So much has changed since then… or has it?
The last column I wrote back in 2017 talked about the rise of conspiracy theories, fake news, and incessant negativity on social media. That certainly hasn't changed – in fact, it continues to plumb new depths.
The good news is I won't be harping on about issues like that in this column. In fact, good news is what this is all about – and, in particular, good news about Newport.
Now I realise you might be coughing and spluttering at seeing the words 'good news' and 'Newport' in the same sentence, but bear with me.
This column will celebrate all the great things that are happening in this city. And, believe me, there will be no shortage of subject matter.
Some people might remember that for a few years, I ran a weekly social media slot, on what was then Twitter, called 'Port Hour'. It was all about giving people, businesses and charities a space to share the brilliant work they were doing in Newport.
That is exactly what this column seeks to do. But with more words.
Sometimes that will mean sticking my head above the parapet, but a few slings and arrows in return for promoting the city that I've called home for the last 36 years will be a small price to pay.
No doubt there will be a few insults flying around on social media, but I can guarantee that I'll have heard them all before, and they will be like water off a particularly large duck's back.
What I really want is for this column to be the place where the voice of the silent majority is heard.
The people who run fantastic businesses in Newport, or brilliant charities, or terrific events, or just give up their time to benefit their communities, and whose voices often get drowned out by the sound and fury of social media.
There are many of them, and they far exceed those who do nothing but sit behind a keyboard and whinge (and, yes, I get the irony of me sitting behind a keyboard and whinging about people whinging!)
So I'll be writing about places like Newport Arcade, Tredegar House, Rodney Parade and The Place; about projects like Positive Futures and The Gap; and charities like Free Bikes 4 Kids and Raven House Trust.
But I also want to hear from you about the great things you're doing in Newport. Just email me here – kevin@kevinwardmedia.com – and I'll write about you.
The golden rule of this weekly column is simple – it will be unremittingly positive about Newport.
It will give a platform to those who love their city and want to shout about it.
Because if we don't do that, then who will?

Wedding Guests Were ‘Offended' by Their Seating Chart Placements — So They Stormed Out

"We couldn't help but be shocked at how entitled some people can be," the groom wrote as he shared the story on RedditNEED TO KNOW After their nuptials, a bride and groom were looking through their wedding photos and were surprised to notice that two of their guests did not appear in any of them Then, they found out that the two guests left the wedding because they were "offended" by their seating arrangements at the reception dinner The groom, who shared the story on Reddit, said he "couldn't help but be shocked at how entitled some people can be"After their nuptials, a bride and groom were looking through their wedding photos and were surprised to notice that two of their guests were not featured in any of them. Then, they learned the truth. In a post on Reddit's "Wedding Shaming" forum, the groom explained that the guests' absence all came down to the couple's carefully planned seating chart. He said that when he and his wife were planning their event, they "spent a lot of time on where guests were seated and who they were seated with." "We wanted to make sure everyone felt welcomed and got to enjoy the social aspects of our wedding — and not just be there to celebrate us," he noted. "We also worked closely with our parents because a lot of guests at the wedding were their friends and family, and we wanted people to meet and get along." A few weeks after the wedding, as they were viewing their photos, the groom mentioned to his mother, "Oh, I don't seem to see any photos of Wife A and Husband A at the reception, but they're clearly there during the ceremony.' His mother was equally puzzled — until she received a phone call from Wife A, who explained the situation. As it turns out, she and her husband were "offended" by where the bride and groom put them on the seating chart and who they were seated with, so they decided to bail on the wedding. "We had put them at a table with friends of theirs, and people who we thought they'd get along with from a professional standpoint," the groom pointed out in his post. He also noted that the two guests have been family friends "for a long time," and that he and his wife even hosted their daughter's bridal shower at their home. "And then the audacity for them to not only leave our wedding reception where we paid for their plates, but also call my mom, let her know they did that, and also not leave a gift," the groom wrote. While the groom said he and his wife quickly shrugged off the unfortunate incident — "luckily, the wedding was beautiful and everyone loved it" — he admitted that they "couldn't help but be shocked at how entitled some people can be." In the comments section, readers appeared to be equally shocked over the two guests' decision to leave the wedding due to their seating arrangements. "There are some people who go through life being offended by the most inane things," one person wrote. "I don't get it," another commenter chimed in. "When did wedding guests start forgetting that the wedding day is about the people getting married and not them?" Yet another reader jokingly wondered, "Was it the table of all her exes, like in Four Weddings and a Funeral?!" in a nod to the 1994 British comedy starring Hugh Grant. They added, "I can't imagine another reason why she couldn't suck it up for an hour or two! Plus, they had each other to talk to." Read the original article on People Solve the daily Crossword

New food waste service collects more than 331 tonnes in just eight weeks

More than 331 tonnes of food waste have been recycled in the first eight weeks of a new council service. New Forest District Council's new waste and recycling service is underway for more than 31,000 residents in the phase one area. In the first eight weeks, more than 331 tonnes of food waste were recycled, enough to fill more than 6,000 sacks. The food waste is being turned into renewable energy and fertiliser, decreasing the amount of waste sent for incineration. "The volume of food waste being recycled already shows the collective impact we can make. "Every peel and plate scrape recycled helps reduce our environmental footprint." The new service encourages recycling by limiting the amount of general waste that can be left out in sacks. It also makes collections safer for crews, keeps streets tidier, and helps the council meet upcoming national recycling requirements. While the majority of collections have gone ahead as planned, the council recognises some residents have experienced disruption and are actively working to respond.

Consultation on town's 15-year plan extended

An opportunity for people to have their say on a town's improvement plans has been extended. The consultation in Northampton has already attracted more than 1,300 responses, with the deadline now delayed by a fortnight to Monday, 25 August. A senior councillor said it was a "pivotal moment" and residents could "directly shape" the future of the town. Reform UK-controlled West Northamptonshire Council said suggestions received so far included making Northampton a distinctive leisure destination, which was "better at showcasing its heritage and identity". People also said they wanted the town to be easier and safer to walk and cycle around. When asked what made them proud about Northampton, respondents mentioned its rich history, beautiful historic buildings and shoemaking heritage. A masterplan was revealed last month, outlining several developments that were already taking place in Northampton and setting priorities for the future. Among the ideas were: Turning St James End into a gateway of sport Creating a "key arrival point" around the railway station Regenerating the Cattlemarket into a living and working space Founding a creative district celebrating shoemaking The council's cabinet member for local economy and culture James Petter said: "This is a pivotal moment for Northampton, and your input can directly shape the future of our town centre. "Whether you live, work or spend time here, we want to hear from you." Follow Northamptonshire news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X.
