New Ober Mountain upgrades allow for longer snow sports season in 2025

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WATE) — With tourism being a crucial part of the Sevier County economy, many attractions are gearing up for their spring season.
One of them is already in full swing. Ober Mountain is open year-round and they are adding more opportunities for visitors this year.
'There's been so much investment put into Ober Mountain now over the last few years,' said Ober Mountain CEO and President Mark Adams. 'These include lifts, new chairlifts, scenic new chairlifts for snow sports, and the investments will continue into the next 4 or 5, ten years.'

With new snowmaking capabilities, Adams said they have been able to extend their snow sports season on Ober Mountain. Because of their draw for skiing, snowboarding, and tubing he said Ober is essential to Sevier County's economy in the winter.
'We already know Sevier County gets upwards of 10-12 million visitors a year, and we'd like to say that Ober really is that anchor for the winter,' he said. 'We are really that anchor attraction that keeps visitors coming year-round.'
This year, he said they have already added two new chairlifts; The Ober Challenge Lift for both skiing and downhill mountain biking, and Sky Village Express for carrying visitors to the highest lift-served peak in the Smokies, The Sky Village Scenic Deck.
The deck will also be a launch site for their new Cloud Catcher Zipline.

'It's some of the longest and highest zipline to the Smokies, and you practically zipline over top of the national park,' said Adams. 'One of them is over 3,500 feet long, and the second one's over 3,200 feet long, and then we finish up coming back to the resort, at about 2,000 feet.'
With Ober employing nearly 400 people, Adams said they hope to keep people coming back for more.
'Because they just want to see snow and be a part of everything that we have to offer here in Gatlinburg,' he said.

While Ober has been a staple in the community for over 60 years, the company rebranded to 'Ober Mountain' in 2022.
Adams added Ober has already had over 100 days of snow sports this year alone and have completed their 12-year plan where they will continue to invest in the area.

North Carolina farmers' drones impacted by tariffs

(WGHP) — The back-and-forth over tariffs between the US and China is creating tension for a variety of businesses. It's also impacting a key and growing technology that helps to put food on your table. That technology is a roughly 50-pound agricultural drone. 'Farmers are amazingly efficient. They're trying to figure out, 'How can I be more productive. How can I create more product to sell?'' NC Cooperative Extension Director for Caldwell County Seth Nagy said. Nagy teaches and helps other farmers use agricultural drones for everything from seeding to spraying herbicides and pesticides to getting a birds-eye view of every corner of a field, sometimes hundreds of acres wide. 'A lot of farmers have problems getting into fields when it's wet, and a lot of our chemicals on the crops, especially fungicide on beans and corn. It's time sensitive, so they need to do it when the time is right,' owner and CEO of Ag Drone Works Jim Adams said. Those drones are also agile, getting into steep pastures and hard-to-reach places and navigating tight corners with telephone lines and cell towers. But there's a problem. 'What really disturbs me more than anything else is the fact that we're not self-sufficient,' Adams said. The drones themselves and their parts are made almost entirely in China. Adams' company sells and helps farmers use the drones that he procures from Chinese companies. Tariff uncertainty makes his job harder. 'The price basically has doubled in the last 90 days. The lead time … doubled, too. More than doubled,' Adams said. Now, it takes two months to get a drone in. The supply chain at popular companies like DJI seems to Adams like they've come to a screeching halt. 'We're just not able to get product to furnish the farmers in what they need,' Adams said. Experts say that in the US, we have the knowledge to build them, but we need the capital investment. With almost 50 registered spray drones in North Carolina and growing, the tech is attracting a new generation of those innovative farmers that Nagy said are essential. 'I think we're able to bring some younger kids inm and I think some really neat value-added stuff,' Nagy said. And Adams says we need to figure things out fast. 'The general public needs to be aware that if we can use this technology effectively and efficiently, it will really help in curbing food prices,' Adams said. 'If not, we're going to continue to see a spiral upward.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Sabres GM Kevyn Adams boosts front-office staff's experience by hiring Jarmo Kekalainen as a senior adviser

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Sabres hired former Columbus Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen to serve as a senior adviser, adding a wealth of experience to general manager Kevyn Adams' front-office staff. Kekalainen will report to Adams in a newly created role in which he'll be involved in all areas of the hockey department, the team announced. The 58-year-old from Finland has been out of the NHL since being fired by the Blue Jackets in February 2024 following an 11-year term as GM — the league's first European-born person to hold the title. His hiring addresses growing criticism Adams has faced in having little experience overseeing the Sabres since taking over the job as a first-time GM after Jason Botterill was abruptly fired in June 2020. Adams, who is from the Buffalo-area, is a former player who had brief experience as an agent and assistant coach, and was working in the Sabres business department upon being hired as GM as part of a series of ownership's cost-cutting moves in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Sabres are in the midst of an NHL-record 14-season playoff drought, with Adams on the hot seat entering the final year of his contract. Amid questions regarding his job security in Buffalo, Adams placed an emphasis on upgrading his staff by saying 'we'll take a look at everything,' during his season-ending address to the media. The Sabres' season was undone by a 13-game skid in December, which Adams has since second-guessed himself as to whether he should have made a move to upgrade his roster. In a statement released by the team, Adams said Kekalainen quickly established himself as a prime candidate for the job of senior adviser during his search process. 'From his extensive history in scouting, his long tenure as an NHL general manager and his vast experience at the international and European pro levels, Jarmo has a remarkable résumé and a long history of success in this league,' Adams said. 'I couldn't be more excited to add another significant piece to our front office as we continue the process of adding to our staff.' During his tenure in Columbus, Kekalainen oversaw the most successful stretch in Blue Jackets history. The span included the team finishing with 43 or more wins four times, including a franchise record 50 in 2016-17, and qualifying for the playoffs five times, after doing so only once in its first 12 seasons of existence. 'We are aligned in our philosophies and share the same core beliefs on how to build a winning team,' Kekalainen said. 'I'm eager to help in any area I can, and think I can offer a fresh perspective to supplement the staff already in place as we look to improve our roster this offseason.' Kekalainen's addition comes after the Sabres hired former NHL forward — and former Adams teammate — Eric Staal in the role of special assistant to the GM. The Sabres front office currently features three assistant GMs in Jason Karmanos, Mark Jakubowski and Jerry Forton. Following a brief NHL playing career in the early 1990s split between Boston and Ottawa, Kekalainen made the transition to scouting, and eventually took on front-office roles with the Senators and St. Louis Blues. He also has experience at the international level in serving as assistant GM of Finland's national team at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, where the nation won a bronze medal, and 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
