Sun shines on Galway Association Golf Society's annual Captain's Day
Over 70 golfers took to the fairways and enjoyed a great day's golf, which was followed by a prize giving dinner in the magnificent Moor Park mansion.
This year's Captain is Paul Caulfield and the day was sponsored by Pat McDonagh of ASM Metal Recycling Ltd, a past GAGS Captain.

The members winner was Steve Hull, guest winner was Fr Dermot O'Neill and the winner of the ladies' section was Mary Flannery.
The GAGS were founded in 1992 by a group of Galway businessmen and has grown into one of the best Irish golf societies around.

Over £200,000 has been raised for worthy causes over that time and proceeds from this year will be presented to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

Both horses went into the race at the same odds of 28/1, but it was Patrick who got the family bragging rights with a third place finish on Lord Lackendarra. Patrick was confident he would get the better of his his daughter before the race when he was speaking to RacingTV. He had said: "This is Sarah and she is not as good as her father, but she's working on it. Eventually when I retire I hope she is as good as me." Sarah finished in a respectable sixth place aboard Goodmancon as she enjoyed the rare spectacle. The 18-year-old spoke to Horse Racing Ireland this week, reflecting: 'It was fairly cool when we pulled up, I knew turning up the straight that I wasn't going to beat him this time. 'He was fairly happy, and I was as happy as I could be seeing as he finished in front of me! It was fairly surreal pulling into the parade ring together." Patrick is a jockey and horse trainer from Waterford. Having broken his neck aged 29, he had to put his jockey career on the back burner. He hadn't raced in 23 years before competing in Wexford last month in preparation for this dream race. It was his goal to race against his daughter and his inspiration for returning to the saddle. Teen Irish jockey Jamie Martin gives joyful interview after winning his debut race Sarah said: 'That was always dad's goal, he wanted to ride against me, so it was always the plan to ride against each other when he took out the license. 'I didn't see it any different until we weighed out. We ride out together every day. I didn't take any notice of him until we were both in the same colours, then it dawned on me that we were racing against each other in an actual race. 'We are fairly competitive at home, so it was a bit annoying now that he finished in front of me, but I'll definitely get him the next day. He's been soaking it up - I didn't hear the end of it on the way home!' Patrick had to dust off his silks as well as lose three stone to reach an appropriate weight to ride Lord Lackendarra. The pair are not the first father-daughter duo to race against each other, as Willie and Rosemary Rooney have also been in the same boat. While the feet had been a goal of Patrick's for some time, his daughter never fully believed it would happen. Sarah added: 'I didn't really think it was going to happen, I thought it was an unrealistic goal but when we found a race in Tramore we thought it would be ideal. "Both horses had course form and it's our local track. We said it would be best to go there. "He had to do a lot of work to get back riding. He put in a lot of work at home as well as getting the horses ready. Getting both horses ready for the same race is not that easy.'

KNEECAP mural appears in West Belfast ahead of Mo Chara hearing
The mural is based on a photo from KNEECAP's first Hot Press cover shoot. A new mural picturing KNEECAP has been unveiled in West Belfast ahead of member Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh's court appearance at the Westminster Magistrates' Court in London today (Wednesday). The mural features various photos of the trio placed over the flag of Palestine. The central portrait is from KNEECAP's first Hot Press cover shoot, taken by Hot Press photographer Miguel Ruiz. 'West Belfast knows political policing,' wrote KNEECAP in the caption of an Instagram post sharing the mural. 'West Belfast knows colonialism. West Belfast knows solidarity.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by KNEECAP (@kneecap32) Ó hAnnaidh, aka Mo Chara, was charged with terrorism for allegedly holding a Hezbollah flag at a November 2024 concert. The band said the flag was thrown on stage and denied supporting Hezbollah. They argued that the charges are politically motivated for their criticism of Israel's occupation of Gaza and of British presence in Ireland. After a hearing in June, Ó hAnnaidh was released on unconditional bail and is due in court for legal arguments later today. Love Music Hate Racism has organised 'Defend KNEECAP, Drop the Charges' demonstration outside Westminster Magistrates' Court during the hearing. Artists performing at the demonstration include Biig Piig, Jelani Blackman, Nadine Shah, Gurriers, Maverick Sabre, Ben Jamal, Gerry Carroll MLA, Ghassan Abu-Sitta, Samira Ali and more. Dublin's Connolly Books also announced a KNEECAP Solidarity Seisiún event for today, featuring Irish artists 'standing in solidarity with Liam Óg, Kneecap and the people of Palestine.' Galway festival to celebrate work and Irish roots of Quiet Man director John Ford
A FESTIVAL is being held in Co. Galway next month to celebrate the work and Irish roots of Quiet Man director, John Ford. Taking place in An Spidéal, Féile John Ford runs from September 5-7 and will feature film screenings and exhibitions of previously unseen photos and artefacts. By reflecting on his extraordinary life and body of work, the festival aims to inspire a new generation of storytellers from his ancestral home-place and beyond. Ford was born John Martin Feeney in Maine, USA in 1894 to Galway parents. His father hailed from Tuar Beag, half-a-mile west of An Spidéal, while his mother came from Coill Rua nearby in a region known as Cois Fharraige ('Beside the Sea'), Throughout his life, Ford maintained strong ties to Ireland, regularly visiting An Spidéal and later transforming Connemara into the unforgettable backdrop for his Oscar-winning 1952 classic, The Quiet Man. He won a record four Oscars for Best Director for The Informer, The Grapes of Wrath, How Green Was My Valley and The Quiet Man, while he also helmed two Oscar-winning documentaries. A true giant of cinema, Ford shaped the course of American film and influenced generations of filmmakers around the world. However, despite being revered worldwide as a cinematic master, Ford's deep connections to the West of Ireland remain surprisingly under-appreciated. Legacy This three-day festival brings his legacy home, honouring him through film screenings, talks and a special exhibition. It will explore the creative thread that connects Ford's legacy to the thriving film and TV industry along Cois Fharraige in the South Connemara Gaeltacht region today. There will be screenings of The Quiet Man, The Searchers, the Irish-set anthology film The Rising of the Moon and one of his silent films, The Shamrock Handicap, accompanied by live music. A documentary on The Quiet Man will also be screened, while there will be storytelling workshops for children. Talks and panel discussions will focus on Ford's roots in An Spidéal, Irish immigration to Maine and the influence of Irish culture in Ford's work. An exhibition will feature photographs and original artefacts from his films, including unpublished photos of extras on the set of The Quiet Man, It will also include actress Maureen O'Hara's original shawl from the movie and Ford's director's chair.
