Fans have their say as Paul Hughes 'dreams come true' in Belfast

Extra.ie11-05-2025

Derryman Paul Hughes has said his 'dreams came true' on Saturday night following a victory just 42 seconds into his fight in the Octagon on Saturday night.
The 28-year-old's homecoming bout saw him come face to face with Brazilian Bruno Miranda at the SSE Arena in Belfast.
The typically calm and collected fighter was overcome with emotion as he jumped onto the cage to an eruption of roars from the crowd.
The victory comes not long after Hughes' defeat against Usman Nurmagomedov, younger cousin of well-known star Khabib.
Earlier in the year, the Lavey native went up against Nurmagomedov for the Bellator World Lightweight title in Dubai with the fight going down to the judges' score cards.
One judge gave the contest a draw at 47-47, while the other two scored it 48-46 to Nurmagomedov. The victory comes not long after Hughes' defeat against Usman Nurmagomedov, younger cousin of well-known star Khabib. Pic: Waleed Zein/Anadolu via Getty Images
Following his victory on Saturday, Paul is now looking towards a rematch with Nurmagomedov, calling the Russian mixed martial artist out in the Octagon.
'USMAN NURMADOMEDOV,' he roared, 'You can run, you can try to delay this rematch as long as you want, but your day is coming.'
Taking to Instagram post-fight, Paul shared a series of clips from the contest where he extended his thanks to his supporters, and reiterated his calls for a title rematch.
The world should've been able to see this tonight so they could understand what Paul Hughes means to these people.

'THANK YOU BELFAST,' he wrote, 'My dreams came through tonight. @usman_nurmagomedov YOUR TIME IS COMING.'
Viewers and fans took to X to have their say on the PFL [Professional Fighters League] Belfast show, with many aggrieved that the event wasn't streamed.
Should go without saying, but the PFL need to go all-in on Paul Hughes. He is it. He's is the guy. He is the star. Make the Usman Nurmagomedov rematch next.
And put it in Belfast. — Seán Sheehan (@SeanSheehanBA) May 10, 2025

‘Different from anything I've ever seen' – Why Chelsea's dazzling new Brazilian star Estevao Willian is the real deal

ABEL Ferreira has been around. So when he says that current wonderkid Estevao is something really special, it is time to pay attention Advertisement 5 Estevao is the new wonderkid to come from Brazil 5 Estevao has played more than 50 games for Palmeiras before his 18th birthday Credit: Getty Ferreira has had a long career as a right back in his native Portugal , coached there and in Greece before heading for Brazil , where for the last four and half years he has been the highly successful boss of Palmeiras. He oversaw the start of the career of Ferreira, 46, says Chelsea's newest arrival Estevao is "different from anything I've ever seen" -- which means the kid must be something very special indeed. It was in the middle of last year, in a post-match press conference, and Ferreira was fighting hard trying to stop himself from saying the words. He used the opportunity to make an appeal to the club not to sell Estevao - which, of course, fell on deaf ears. Advertisement Most read in Football Breaking Within a few weeks The deal officially goes through on June 1, but the small print means that he'll still be wearing a Palmeiras shirt for a few more weeks. Chelsea fans will be able to see their new teenage prodigy when Palmeiras take on So what was it about this slightly built, unassuming youngster that had captivated Abel Ferreira so much? Advertisement In part, as you might expect from a coach who comes across as a young Jose Mourinho, it was a mentality thing. He loved the way that Estevao, right from the start, was so unflustered by failure. Ferreira would make a point of showing the Palmeiras youth players how, if a move did not come off, Estevao would dust himself down and, full of confidence, try something new. 5 Estevao has a reputation as a brilliant dribbler Credit: EPA Advertisement 5 The Brazilian teenager is predominantly left footed Credit: AFP 5 Willian Estevao made his debut for Brazil last year aged 17 Credit: AFP At 17 he was taking crunch penalties and free kicks. This, then, is a skinny little player with a big heart. But what absolutely leaps out is the talent - that kind of George Best -type balance that makes it appear that, while things are happening all too quickly for the defenders, he is operating in slow motion, sizing up his options and calculating their chances of success. Advertisement Left footed, he has been used on the right wing, where he can cut in and shoot, or go outside and cross. And, to the delight of his coach, he has a keen understanding of the space that he needs to attack. His first start came almost a year ago - April 11th 2024, in a game in the Copa Libertadores, South America's Champions League, against a team from Uruguay . Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Man City, and Inter Miami are among the 32 teams taking part in the tournament, which runs from June 14 to July 13. Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, Ousmane Dembele, Cole Palmer and Harry Kane will be showing their skills to packed crowds across the US. Los Blancos are favourites to lift the trophy in New York but will face stiff competition from around the globe. Here's everything you need to know ahead of the tournament... INFO Everything you need to know ahead of the Club World Cup LATEST NEWS & FEATURES It was not the type of goal that might have been expected from a player of his type, but it was the consequence of how he had read the situation and worked out where to go. All of this brought back memories of another little player who at 17 had a similar capacity to understand what was going on around him - a certain Lionel Messi. And at the start of his youth career, Estevao was nicknamed 'Messinho.' The name of that Uruguayan club, by the way, was Liverpool . Advertisement And all around the stadium, even on his debut as a starter, there was an understanding that he would soon be on the other side of the Atlantic, coming up against a much bigger club with the same name. Palmeiras fans, and Brazilian supporters in general, are catching Estevao while they can. Soon, though, watching him will be the privilege of the Chelsea faithful. And they should be genuinely excited. It is hard to see how they can make use of all of the talent that they buy - Ecuadorian wonderkid Advertisement His form has slumped, which is worrying just a few months before his move to England . He could easily find himself out on loan, and lose momentum as a result. Estevao, though, will demand inclusion. Chelsea supporters have the chance to follow the growth of the most dazzling talent to come out of Brazil since Neymar- but with much less of the baggage. Estevao is a discreet figure. There is nothing histrionic about him, and instead of going to ground looking for fouls, he has the healthy habit of trying to stay on his feet. Matheus Cunha makes his first comments as a Manchester United player

(Photo by Manchester United/Manchester United via Getty Images) Matheus Cunha is delighted to have joined his 'dream team' and determined to help Manchester United bounce back from their worst season in 51 years. The 20-time English champions are in the midst of a rebuild under Ruben Amorim, having limped home 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final to fellow strugglers Tottenham. The defeat in Bilbao cost them Champions League qualification, meaning United will spend a first season without European football since 2014-15. But the Red Devils' issues did not deter Brazil international Cunha, who completed his eagerly-anticipated £62.5million switch from Wolves on Thursday. 'Maybe outside, I think maybe my decision, they don't understand. But when you have always dreamed to play here, it's easier to pick this decision. 'For me, no-one else is like United. Of course, I know it's been a hard season for everyone. I think my decision shows what this club is for me and what I believe this club can be. 'And, of course, I'll do everything that I can to manage this inside of me, to play for my dream team and put my dream team to win.' Cunha loved United growing up and spoke of his admiration for Wayne Rooney, along with many other members of the triumphant 2008 Champions League side. The Red Devils are a long way from even qualifying for that competition right now, yet the forward has lofty ambitions. 'I don't think we have one player who comes here and then doesn't think about the glory days in Man United,' Cunha said. 'To remember all the times that they win the Premier League, how many titles it was, and of course to qualify for the Champions League. This is what I think about United, you know to put this club on top. Matheus Cunha is looking forward to playing under Ruben Amorim (Martin Rickett/PA) 'Then what I can do is everything to show them I'm here to help the team, to conquer these kind of things.' Cunha is the first of Amorim's summer recruits and the Brazilian, who has signed a deal until 2030 with the option of another year, is excited to work under the United head coach. 'I really believe in him, everything that he did in Portugal,' he said. 'I hope he can conquer the world like he did in Portugal. 'But of course I think he needs the players that can do everything like I'm open to do and help the team, help him. All the conversation that we have had made my decision easier.'
