These centres provide free treatment, 80 types of free medicines, and 38 types of free diagnostic tests. The state's health department directed deputy commissioners and civil surgeons to identify suitable buildings in line with prescribed norms for establishing the new centres. Authorities were instructed to ensure a minimum distance of 1 to 3 km between existing health facilities and the new Kendras.According to officials, of the 208 new health facilities, 42 are to be set up in Ludhiana, 26 in Jalandhar, 23 in Amritsar, 20 in Gurdaspur, 9 in Sangrur, and 8 each in Bathinda, Fazilka, Muktsar, and Pathankot. The identified facility must include a separate room for the doctor, a room for the pharmacist, waiting areas, a reception, and a toilet. Deputy commissioners and civil surgeons were asked to submit their location reports by May 12.The expansion follows a resolution to a long-standing conflict between the Punjab govt and the Union health ministry over the branding of 242 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs—formerly known as Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres. The state renamed them as Aam Aadmi Clinics (AACs), leading the Centre to withhold National Health Mission (NHM) funds. In Nov 2024, the two sides reached an agreement to rebrand the clinics as Ayushman Arogya Kendras, aligning with the Centre's guidelines. The renaming process was completed by Jan 2025 and included wall painting, installation of six logos, name boards, and defined border patterns for windows and doors. The dispute led to the suspension of NHM funds amounting to Rs 112 crore for the financial year 2022–23 and Rs 366.41 crore for 2023–24, from a total central allocation of Rs 457.90 crore.MSID:: 121110730 413 |

TN's Katpadi to get first govt hospital, CM Stalin to inaugurate on June 25

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will inaugurate Katpadi's first full-fledged government taluk hospital in Serkadu village, Vellore district, on June 25. The Rs 14.30 crore facility, built by the Public Works Department (PWD), is nearing completion, with final touches underway. PWD Assistant Engineer K. Sundar (Katpadi division) confirmed that the new 60-bed hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including ECG units, CT scan services, and fully functional surgical theatres. The hospital also ensures uninterrupted power supply, backed by diesel generators. Currently, the only government medical facility in Katpadi is an ageing Primary Health Centre (PHC), which operates between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily except Sundays. On average, it handles 500-700 outpatients per day, most of whom are referred to Adukkamparai for specialised treatment. Spread across 15 acres, the new taluk hospital features separate departments for cardiology, neurology, paediatrics, nephrology, obstetrics, and gynaecology. Dedicated wards have been created for emergency and accident cases, cancer treatment, sedation, and radiology. There are also five consultation rooms for outpatient services. Modern civic amenities have also been incorporated. The hospital includes two lifts, one each for patients and staff, drinking water facilities and washrooms on every floor, a rainwater harvesting system, and solar panels for lighting the premises. To improve accessibility, the facility includes designated parking for both two-wheelers and cars, and 24x7 surveillance through CCTV cameras. Health department officials have stated that public bus services to the hospital will be enhanced to ensure better connectivity for patients and visitors. The inauguration will be part of CM Stalin's two-day visit to Ranipet, Vellore, and Tirupattur districts on June 25 and 26. During the tour, he will also distribute welfare assistance to government scheme beneficiaries and review ongoing development projects. Residents have welcomed the new facility, calling it a much-needed healthcare lifeline for the region. The area includes more than 40 farming villages, and until now, residents had to travel over 15 km to access advanced medical care at the Government Medical College Hospital in Adukkamparai, on the outskirts of Vellore.

Mortal remains of 5 Keralites who died in Kenyan road mishap reach state

Kochi, The bodies of five Keralites who died in a road mishap in Kenya were flown back to the southern state on Sunday, official sources said. The bodies of the deceased, including those of two children, aged one-and-a-half and seven years old, reached the international airport at Nedumbassery here on a flight from Qatar, the sources said. The victims travelled to the African nation for a holiday, and the accident occurred in the Nyandarua County. Industries Minister P Rajeev and other officials concerned, and relatives of the deceased, received the dead bodies. The minister placed wreaths on the mortal remains and paid homage on behalf of the state government after the bodies were shifted to the ambulances. The bodies were not kept for public homage at the airport as requested by the family members and were taken to their respective places, sources said. While talking to the reporters at the airport later, Rajeev said, the funeral of some of the deceased would be held on Sunday, and others would be held on Tuesday. "The mishap was a painful incident. Those who had gone on holiday to Kenya met with the tragedy. The government intervened in all possible areas and did everything for the smooth repatriation of the bodies without delay," he said. Rajeev said though there was an issue with the yellow fever vaccination certificate, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan intervened in the matter and helped to waive it. The relatives, however, were given general instructions to make funeral arrangements in accordance with protocol, he said. The minister said he also met the three injured persons, and they would be admitted to a hospital soon. The deceased hail from Moovattupuzha, Mavelikkara and Palakkad, authorities said. The Non-Resident Keralites Affairs authorities in the statement on Saturday said that the swift intervention of CM Vijayan has helped to get a special exemption from the Centre in connection with a yellow fever vaccine certificate. Just a few hours before the flight carrying bodies scheduled to depart from Kenya to Qatar, the travel agency officials stated that a yellow fever vaccine certificate was required to transport the mortal remains of the accident victims. This raised concerns that the repatriation of the bodies would be delayed, but CM Vijayan intervened and took up the matter with the Centre, which later waived the vaccine certificate considering the special circumstances, the statement added. Vijayan, on Wednesday, had written to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, requesting full support for the swift and dignified repatriation of the mortal remains of the deceased to India. He had urged the Ministry of External Affairs to direct the Indian High Commission in Kenya to facilitate legal formalities, documentation, and logistical support for the affected families.
