Aaron Pico speaks out after brutal spinning elbow loss to Lerone Murphy at UFC 319
UFC 319 saw Pico, 28, take his next career step after making his name in Bellator, but after showing promising signs in the early minutes, he was on the wrong end of a knockout of the year contender.
In fact, Murphy's highlight-reel KO of the American was the second straight spinning back elbow knockout of the night, remarkably. In the previous fight, Carlos Prates beat Geoff Neal by the same means.
Prates's strike came in the final second of the first round, dropped and badly hurt Neal, and was immediately touted as a contender for knockout of the year. Then, Murphy produced the same shot but put his opponent out cold, yet he added a hammer fist for good measure.
The Briton, 34, might have established himself as the No 1 contender to featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski in the process. Meanwhile, Pico must go back to the drawing board.
'Last night wasn't my night, that's the fight game,' Pico wrote on Instagram. 'I'm grateful for my team, my family, and everyone who continues to support me.
'The supporters that have been there from day one and my new supporters, I see you! Thank you. Wins and losses both teach lessons and I'll come back sharper, stronger, and better prepared.
'Thank you all who have sent messages and checked in, my health is well. Thanks for riding with me. My story is not over.'
Although Pico was making his UFC debut, he believed that a win over Murphy might have skyrocketed him up the rankings, potentially earning him a shot at Volkanovski.
Now, however, attention turns to the potential of a Murphy vs Volkanovski fight, with the latter having reclaimed the featherweight belt in April.
Volkanovski's decision win over Diego Lopes saw the Australian claim the vacant title, after Ilia Topuria relinquished it and moved up to lightweight, where he won a second belt. Volkanovski's previous fight was in fact a knockout loss to Topuria, as the latter won the title, which he then defended just once before giving it up.
In the main event of UFC 319 on Saturday (16 August), Pico's teammate Khamzat Chimaev dominated Dricus Du Plessis to win the middleweight title, claiming a decision win.

'Back Brendan' or the 'perfect excuse to leave'
We asked you for your thoughts on Celtic's summer transfer window and Brendan Rodgers' post-match comments after the 0-0 draw with Kairat a taste of what you had to Why do people think Brendan Rodgers negotiates the fees? If this rudderless, money-hungry board had done their business sooner those the players would have cost nowhere near 20m. Celtic cannot progress while the same faces run the show with their regular managed It's clear we have the money and winning two or three domestically is not what fans want or expect - they want a team that competes in Europe. We have to shop around but look at Bodo/Glimt - 5-0 winners tonight - who don't have our resources. Back Brendan!Kenny: Low-ball bids have resulted in gambling on the play-off. The disgust in Brendan Rodgers is the same as every fan. Signing projects hoping one out of five sells for £20m. Teflon Brendan: No matter what happens, it's always someone else's fault. Either the board or the The usual from Rodgers… blah blah The issue with signings is not fees, it's timing. Jota is long term out, Brendan said he wants Yang Hyun-jun out on loan, Nicolas Kuhn was sold weeks ago. The club are presumably singing two wingers, and yet we can't get one signed before the important games have The transfer dealing aren't good enough but maybe we also need to look at Rodgers' failure to evolve in terms of team set up. It's a team of players who go side-to-side with no one willing to break rank and try something different to create space for shots or forward That one is on Rodgers and the players. Should have beaten them with what we Rodgers has the perfect excuse to leave after this season. Lack of urgency and quality about this team. The board have rolled the dice and failed, this is on Brendan working his ticket again? Fans going to hound out Lawwell again? We're just lucky Rangers haven't got their act together. Sack the Not nearly good enough. Kyogo and Kuhn are long gone and Adam Idah is not anywhere near the standard we Lack of re-investment of the transfer revenue clearly demonstrates the lack of ambition of the club.

Chelsea owners BlueCo reach agreement to sign Brighton's Julio Enciso, with their outlay on Seagulls recruits rising to more than £250m since their Stamford Bridge takeover
BlueCo, the group that owns Chelsea and Strasbourg, has reached agreement to sign Julio Enciso from Brighton and Hove Albion. The 21-year old midfielder is recovering from a knee injury but will join Strasbourg initially before later transferring to Chelsea. The £13.8million transfer continues BlueCo's astonishing pattern of recruitment from Brighton since taking control at Stamford Bridge in 2022. Enciso is set to become the fifth player signed from the Amex Stadium, following Marc Cucurella, Moises Caicedo, Robert Sanchez and Joao Pedro. In addition, Chelsea paid over £21m in compensation to bring manager Graham Potter and his staff to west London, and later appointed Brighton's former transfer chiefs Paul Winstanley and Sam Jewell into senior recruitment roles. The latest deal pushes Chelsea's spending on Brighton players and staff beyond £250million. Enciso joined the Seagulls from Paraguayan side Libertad in 2022 and made 57 first-team appearances, scoring five goals and supplying six assists. His time on the south coast was disrupted by injury, including a torn meniscus in August 2023 that kept him sidelined for six months and caused him to miss 38 matches for club and country. He returned in early 2024 but struggled to secure a regular place under new Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, who left him out of his long-term plans. The attacking midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at Ipswich Town, contributing two goals and three assists in 13 games. Despite the Tractor Boys' relegation, he impressed in flashes with his direct play and creativity. Enciso's progress has again been halted by fitness issues. He underwent knee surgery in May, which is expected to keep him out for several more weeks. Brighton hope the procedure will finally resolve the recurring problems that have plagued him since 2023. The hope is that Strasbourg can provide a fresh environment and consistent game time once he returns, with the French side qualifying for the Europa Conference League after finishing seventh in Ligue 1. BlueCo purchased Strasbourg in 2023 as part of their multi-club strategy, using the French side to develop talent earmarked for Chelsea. Managed by Liam Rosenior, Strasbourg began their domestic campaign with a 1-0 win at Metz and will also face Brondby in the Conference League play-off round this week. Enciso's arrival is seen as a significant coup for Rosenior's side as they prepare for the demands of European football.
