Murray State jumps on Ole Miss, holds on to win Oxford Regional 12-11 for 1st super regional berth
OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Luke Mistone and Will Vierling had four hits apiece in Murray State's 19-hit attack and the Racers won the Oxford Regional by holding off 15th-seeded Ole Miss 12-11 on Monday night to make their first super regional.
The Racers (42-14) advance to the Durham Super Regional against unseeded Duke, which won the Athens Regional. Murray State is the third straight Missouri Valley Conference team to make the second weekend after Indiana State (2023) and Evansville (2024).
Mistone and Vierling both went 4 for 5 and Carson Garner and Dom Decker both had three hits as the Racers shocked the team that pounded them 19-8 on Sunday night by opening a 12-3 lead in the seventh inning.
Ole Miss (43-21) used a single, a hit batter and three straight walks to turn the game around. Luke Hill had a two-run single and Will Furniss another single to make it 12-8.
Graham Kelham got two strikeouts to end the inning. A video review was used to overturn a hit batter that would have loaded the bases with one out.
Brayden Randle hit his first home run of the season, a three-run shot in the eighth to make it a one-run game.
Kelham allowed two more singles before getting out of the inning and then had a perfect ninth. He gave up six hits in 2 2/3 innings but struck out six to get his seventh save. Nic Schutte (8-3), who started in the Racers' 9-6 win over the Rebels on Friday, got the win in relief.
Walker Hooks (1-2), the first of six Ole Miss pitchers, gave up eight hits and five runs in 2 1/3 innings in the loss.

North Carolina It's hard to ever go wrong with Carolina blue and white as primary colors, especially with the argyle design of the school's basketball uniforms incorporated in the design. It's fair to wonder how Bill Belichick will fare as a college head coach, but at the very least, his Tar Heels teams are going to look good. 13. Oklahoma There's nothing flashy about Oklahoma's uniforms, but the interlocking "OU" and Sooners across the chest is such a powerful look. Former LSU football transfer quarterback Walker Howard named starter for in-state foe
Source: Louisiana has named former Ole Miss/LSU quarterback Walker Howard the school's starting quarterback, and he'll make his first college start against Rice on Aug. 30. Howard ranked as ESPN's No. 3 dual-threat QB recruit in Class of 2022 behind Cade Klubnik and Ty Simpson. Former LSU quarterback Walker Howard earned the starting role at his third school, according to a report from ESPN's Pete Thamel on Tuesday. Howard will make the first start of his collegiate career for Louisiana-Lafayette. The Ragin' Cajuns kick off their season against Rice on August 30 at 8 PM. Howard got the nod over redshirt sophomore Lunch Winfield and redshirt freshman Daniel Beale. Recruited during the 2022 cycle, Howard was the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback in the class behind Cade Klubnik and Ty Simpson as a top-50 overall recruit. He committed to LSU and spent the season backing up Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier before transferring. Howard stuck with LSU through a head coaching transition and was one of the top-ranked signees in Brian Kelly's first class. Howard played the past two years at Ole Miss and appeared in four games, completing three passes for 56 yards. The transfer to Louisiana marks a homecoming for the Lafayette native. He won two state titles at St. Thomas More High School.

Former Ole Miss and New Orleans Saints quarterback Archie Manning told Texas Monthly that NFL teams shouldn't hold their breath to see his grandson in the draft next April — but that's not a decision that Arch had made as of Tuesday.
